A special kitchen is next to Jiangxi Children’s Hospital in Nanchang. Around meal time, families of the hospital’s patients (病人) use the kitchen to cook food for their loved ones.
The kitchen was a breakfast stall (摊) at first, run by a husband and wife, Wan Zuocheng and Xiong Gengxiang. One day, in 2023, a young woman asked if she could use it to cook food for her son who was in hospital, Wan and Xiong agreed. Later on, they gave cookers to people for free to help them cook for family in hospital. As it’s known to more people, they began to call their breakfast stall “kitchen of love” because in their eyes it was a place to pass on love.
With more and ore people coming and cooking, Wang and Xiong had to turn their stall into a big kitchen while people began to show their willingness to share the costs (费用). Wan and Xiong finally agreed to set a very low price: 1 yuan to cook a dish and 1.5 yuan to cook soup.
Now they are over 60, but to make it easier for others to use the kitchen, they still get up at 4 a.m every day to boil water and cook rice.
Wan and Xiong always listen to patients’ families talking about their experiences because they believe listening to those people’s experiences can make them feel better. Xiong says, “It’s necessary to take medicine when we’re ill, however, 有时候爱比其它任何药物都有效. I feel really happy to run the kitchen and help others.”

②National Volunteer Week started in 1974 and is held every April. It is a time to thank volunteers for their achievements. It is also a perfect opportunity (机会) to encourage others to take their first step toward becoming a volunteer. ③Start out slowly, don’t add too much pressure (压力). Even a few hours a month can make a big difference in someone’s life.
④Choose an organization (组织) with the same interests and common values.
⑤Take part in a training meeting for new volunteers, even if it is not asked.
⑥Work with a experienced volunteer. He volunteered a lot, he can help you increase the confidence and completely understand the organization’s expectations.
⑦Invite a friend or family member to serve. It is a good experience to volunteer with them.
⑧Finally, it is most important to enjoy the volunteer experience and to remember that not all volunteer experiences are perfect. If one experience doesn’t work, don’t give up and you’ll surely find the right opportunity.
