4 . Arsh Pal had a big dream when he started selling his artworks at the age of eight. He wanted to raise $1,000 for charities (慈善机构).
Now, five years later, the American boy has far surpassed his plan. Arsh has sold 500 paintings and brought in $15,000. Almost every dollar of this income (收入) has gone to charities.
When Arsh was a little boy, his parents introduced him to many activities. The boy, however, was interested in none of them. Things changed when he got a watercolor set (水彩套装) for his eighth birthday. Arsh began to spend all his free time in front of an easel (画架). “That was how I started painting.” he said.
Soon, Arsh finished many paintings. They took up a lot of space in his room. The boy decided to give them away to his friends. Around the same time, Arsh visited a nursing home (养老院). The experience made him think about selling his artworks to help other people.
So he began his money raising project. He sells his paintings at local art shows, restaurants and libraries, as well as on the Internet. Small pieces have been sold for $10 each. Larger ones (about 150cm tall and wide) have been sold for more than $800 each.
“I can’t stress enough how amazing he is,” said Jolene Schaver, one of Arsh’s neighbors. “It’s hard to believe that this is being done by a child.” The woman has five of Arsh’s paintings hanging in her home.

6 . The Seine is a beautiful river which goes through France. However, the Seine has been seriously polluted. There are even laws (法律) that do not let people swim in the water. 11-year-old Raphael wants to clean the river. He wants people to swim in the Seine by 2024. That is when the city will host the Olympic Games.
Cleaning the river is a big job. Raphael fishes rubbish out of the river. He has done it nearly every weekend for the past two years. He fishes rubbish with his dad. They can catch a ton of rubbish in a single day. They have caught anything from phones to scooters (滑行艇).
Raphael learned about cleaning rivers from YouTube. In 2019, he found a video. People were fishing metal objects (金属物品) out of rivers. They used ropes (绳子) tied to magnets (磁铁). The magnet was very strong. It could attract (吸引) metal objects.
When he began, fishing for metal was just a lazy weekend activity. But Raphael soon saw just how much rubbish there was at the bottom (底部) of the river. He wanted to do more. It became like a full-time job, he said.
Last October, Raphael won an award (获奖) for his efforts (努力). He received the Medal of Paris. Raphael is confident about his progress (进步) in the last two years. A section of the Seine is clearer than the rest of the river. That is where he first started fishing for metal.
