1 . Every year, a lot of young people in Britain finish school and then take a year off before they start work or go to university. Some people go to other countries and work as volunteers. Volunteers give their time to help people—for example, they work in schools or hospitals, or they help to protect the environment.
Pauline Jones, 18, comes from Cardiff, Wales (威尔士加的夫). Next year she wants to go to a university to study Spanish, but now she is living in Belize, a small country in Central America (中美洲). Pauline says, “I’m working with other people here to protect the coral reefs (珊瑚礁) in the sea near Belize. The reefs here are beautiful, but if the sea water is polluted (污染), the coral will die. I’m helping to study the coral and the fish that live around the reefs. All over the world, coral reefs are dying. We need to do something about the problem before it’s too late.”
“I’m staying with a family here. They are very friendly and I help with the cooking and the cleaning. I don’t get any money, but that’s OK. I love my work here, and I have learned a lot about the people of Belize—and myself. When I finish my work, I want to stay here for another three months. I plan to visit other countries in Central America too.”

People do volunteering for different reasons, but mainly to help other people or animals. Volunteering not only is good for those who receive help, but also even brings more good to the help-givers. For school-aged kids, volunteering helps build social skills and develop self-worth awareness (自我价值意识). Through volunteering, high school students may help themselves get into a good college, and college students can improve themselves for better jobs after graduation. Volunteering truly makes a difference. | Volunteering plays a key role in making our society stronger. Volunteer organizations provide services that help build a united (团结的) society together with other organizations. Volunteering helps develop socially responsible business practice (惯例). The practice helps get business decisions made with respect for the neighborhood and environment. Socially responsible businesses also like to be known for setting up or supporting charity programs. |
C | D |
To volunteer, one should know how to choose right work. If you are a first-time volunteer, short-term work will provide you with the best chance to see if the work is right for you. Short-term volunteering is especially valuable if you can help by providing skills not found at the organization. When you find the right volunteer program, serving a longer term gives you the chance to develop a higher level of skill. | Want to do volunteer work? Join us! As they walked, Mark bent over and picked up a can without even thinking about it. When he saw the can in his hand, he laughed.
