Have you heard of any volunteer activities like planting trees, cleaning up the community and looking after the old people? But do you know what is volunteer travel? It is a new and popular volunteer activity among young people.
The main purpose of volunteer travel is to take part in service activities to help others. During the trip, volunteer travelers often provide services like teaching, cooking, animal caring.and cultural activities. The volunteers may get free or cheaper accommodation (住处), and meals because of their help.
It seems that these long journeys could only be made possible in recent years by modern transport. However, volunteer travel started in the 1960s, when Alee Dickson and his wife Mora from the UK founded Voluntary Service Overseas (VSO), an international volunteer organization.
Traditionally, the volunteer activities take place in a foreign country. But so far, more volunteer trips have taken place in the volunteers’ own countries. Volunteer projects in the countryside are now attracting more visitors living in the cities.
By doing voluntary work while traveling, travelers may make a real and positive influence on the world. The services volunteers provide can reduce the costs for the communities they serve. Another advantage of volunteer travel is that it helps people living in cities experience the life in the countryside. For those who are tired of city life but can’t move to the countryside, volunteer travel can be a way. In this way, travelers have a chance to relax themselves from their busy lives.

3 . Chris is not a traditional explorer (探险家)—he usually works in an office for a large organization (组织). However, Chris’ job can be just as exciting and dangerous as being an explorer. Chris works for MSF, an organization also known as Doctors without borders. In 1971, MSF began to send trained doctors all over the world to help people who have suffered from disasters such as wars and illness. Chris is a doctor from France who has traveled to many places to organize programs that help people .
At the moment, over 2,700 trained doctors took part in MSF projects. The organization received the Nobel Peace Prize (诺贝尔和平奖) in 1999. All kinds of doctors can volunteer for MSF. When MSF choose a doctor for a task (任务), they have to go for at least six months. When doctors finish a few tasks, they might be sent to an emergency (紧急的) task after a disaster, such as an earthquake.
But why would doctors leave a comfortable life and a good pay to join MSF? According to Chris, the experience they have is a great help in their life. What’s more, just like the explorers of the past, they need to keep an open mind learn to get on well with the people they meet. One thing that they can say at the end of any task is that they have made a difference to people’s lives.

4 . Garbage sorting (垃圾分类) began on July 1, 2019. However, I live in my building with the other 238 families and we live with a similar system (系统) for years. Here, I’d like to talk about our experiences.
In October 2016, the government (政府) chose our neighborhood to be part of a pilot (试点的) program for garbage sorting. To help the program run successfully, we set up a volunteer team. I am one of the volunteers. However, several of us didn’t know if we could lead people in the building to change their habits.
We began with the usual ways. We handed out notices around the neighborhood. We also went door to door to tell people how to sort garbage. However, they made many mistakes. For example, many didn’t know wet rubbish meant food waste. Instead, they thought it meant rubbish that was wet. Some even refused to sort their garbage.
As a result, we volunteers had to do lots of sorting ourselves. At the same time, we went around explaining the rules. We kept talking to those people who refused to sort their garbage. We let them know we could help to sort garbage for them. It was a matter of time and patience. We believed they would finally change their mind.
Six months later, we were successful in changing people’s mind. People in my building began sorting their garbage. Some even joined us to help us.
I think face-to-face talks played an important role. Sometimes, these talks led to conflicts, but they were much more effective (有效的) than handing out notices. It was interesting to see what happened. I hope everyone knows garbage sorting is good for them.

9 . About one year ago, my grandfather was ill. His illness influenced (影响) his legs, which made it difficult for him to walk. Then my family started looking for nursing homes. It took us two weeks before making a decision. Unluckily, he had to stay there until he improved. Then I knew the care and service old people needed and how important it was to volunteer at a nursing home.
I did volunteer work at my grandfather’s nursing home last summer. I volunteered two days a week during the summer. I learned many things about nursing homes, including the old people’s life, the care they received and the environment around them.
I worked with Dr. Smith, the one who planned activities for the old. I read their children’s letters to them. Besides, I helped them on special days like Ice Cream Day, Summer Picnic Day and Clown Around Day. I also took the old people for walks. We also had birthday parties for them.
I had many good experiences both volunteering and visiting my grandfather. My volunteering experience showed that I could bring joy to old people. Everyone will have to face their parents and grandparents growing older.
