1 . Looking for a new way to raise money for charity (慈善事业)? Has your school run out of clever and fun ideas? Don’t give up. There are several ways to support (支持) your favorite charity.
How about organizing (组织) a car wash? Everybody who has a car sooner or later washes it or has it washed. So why don’t you and your classmates do the job? The money the car owners pay will go towards your charity. When we did it, we had an amazing (令人惊喜的) time! At first, some of us were worried about getting wet or dirty and it was true. But we also had fun, and at the end of the day it was really worth (值得) it!
On the other hand, if you don’t feel like getting wet or messy, but have some musical talent, how about organizing a street concert? Street musicians can make a lot of money, and so can you if you’ve got the talent and courage it takes to play in front of an audience (听众). You just need to find a suitable place, practice for a few hours with your friends first, and give it a try!
I hope the above ideas can help you, and if you’ve got any other great suggestions, we would love to hear them and practice them, too. Good luck!

Yan Minwen, a retired (退休的) engineer in Beijing, set up a free class to teach left-behind children (留守儿童) in her hometown in Hebei Province.
Although Yan is not a teacher, it is a common wish of her and her husband to open such a class in the village. She told her husband that she wanted to open a class in her hometown, and her husband agreed.
However, before she set up the “small desks”, her husband fell ill and died. Yan was very sad, but she didn’t forget their wish. She rented (租)a room from her uncle, bought some used desks and chairs and started the class on March 23.

“It is not about teaching, but about company (陪伴),” Yan said.
After learning that Yan is teaching in the village to help left-behind children, her old classmates send books to her every now and then to help her.
Some young people also want to help with “small desks” and Yan is always happy to see this happen. She said, “I am too old to take care of the class all by myself.” Yan wants to see more volunteers help these left-behind children and is planning to open a library in the village as soon as possible.

The meaning of the word “volunteer” may be a little different in different countries, but it usually means one who offers his or her services. There are many different ways in which people can volunteer, such as taking care of sick people, working in homes for homeless children, and picking up rubbish from beaches and parks. Volunteers may work within their own countries or in other countries. They are usually people with a strong wish to help those who are less fortunate (幸运的) than themselves. Volunteers don’t expect any kind of pay.
At the root of volunteering is the idea that one person may have the ability to offer services that can help other people. Tracy, a good friend of mine, however, recently came back from India with a new idea of what being a volunteer meant. She worked for two and a half weeks in Calcutta.
“I was asked to work in a home for sick people. I helped wash clothes and sheets, and give out lunch. I also fed the people who were too weak to feed themselves and tried to cheer them up. I felt it was better to share with them than to think that I have helped them. To be honest, I didn’t think I was helping very much. It was then that I realized that I had not really come to help, but to learn about and experience another culture that helped improve my own understanding of life and the world.”

In 2019, Thierry Henry, a bus driver, found there was a rise in bike thefts in his city, Reykjavik. Rather than accept that the bike was gone forever, he decided to take matters into his own hands and started to track down (追踪) the bikes and return them to their owners.
The 44-year-old has helped return hundreds of stolen bikes in the past 4 years. His social media account (账号) has over 14,500 members and helps people track down more than just lost bikes. His page extends (拓展) to people who have lost tools, cars and other things of high value. On top of his acts of kindness, Henry has helped the bike thieves to reform (改正) in the process.
At first, Henry would treat the thieves with anger. However, overtime, he realized that most of the thieves were driven out of poverty (贫穷) and other problems. He went from feeling negatively (否定) towards the thieves, to developing empathy (同理心) for their situations. It was very difficult at first. But Henry decided to try to level with them and just talk to them.
From this moment onward, he reached out to the thieves, offering help and guidance. After changing his method, Henry found that the bike thieves began to often hand back the bikes to him. Amazingly, some former thieves that Henry helped now help him in looking for the stolen bikes.
“It’s like a snowball that has got bigger and bigger,” says Henry. “It’s not only me. Many times, someone found a bike hidden in a bush and takes a picture. Then someone else comments (评论), ‘hey, that’s my bike’.”
Thanks to Henry, everyone’s looking out.

Aguolieha, a 13-year-old girl living in a mountain village in Liangshan Yi Autonomous Prefecture (凉山彝族自治州) now could go to big cities and even go abroad to take part in basketball games.
There are some other children like Aguolieha. Their change can be attributed to (归因于) this area’s strong basketball tradition and especially to their basketball coach Waeramu (Amu).
Coach Amu fell in love with the sport when he was a little boy. So he chose to study physical education at university. After graduation, he once worked in a city like his classmates. But he soon realized that it wasn’t his dream. He took a risk and moved back home to teach local kids how to play basketball professionally (专业地).
