Zhang Guimei, the principal of Huaping High School for Girls, has been given the title “Role Model of the Times” for helping girls from poor families. Here is the moving story of Ms. Zhang.
Zhang moved to Lijiang at the age of 17 to teach in the middle school in Huaping County. Once, she got badly ill but had no money for the treatment (治疗). A special kitchen is next to Jiangxi Children’s Hospital in Nanchang. Around meal time, families of the hospital’s patients (病人) use the kitchen to cook food for their loved ones.
The kitchen was a breakfast stall (摊) at first, run by a husband and wife, Wan Zuocheng and Xiong Gengxiang. One day, in 2023, a young woman asked if she could use it to cook food for her son who was in hospital, Wan and Xiong agreed. Yan Minwen, a retired (退休的) engineer in Beijing, set up a free class to teach left-behind children (留守儿童) in her hometown in Hebei Province.
Although Yan is not a teacher, it is a common wish of her and her husband to open such a class in the village. She told her husband that she wanted to open a class in her hometown, and her husband agreed.
