1 . It was a mid-August evening. Some children filled a big yard in a small village in Tongzi, Guizhou. An old man with gray hair wrote several beautiful English words on the blackboard and asked the children to read. As he listened, a look of satisfaction appeared on his face.
The old man with gray hair is Liu Xiaosheng. He used to be a foreign language teacher at a university in Chongqing. In 2012, he came to Shuijing Village in Guizhou for summer vacation. One evening, he saw a neighbor’s child learning English. He found that the child had poor pronunciation. As a teacher, he felt the need to do something, so he began to teach the child for free.
In this way, Liu had his first student. Gradually, news of free English learning spread through the village, and more children came. At first, Liu taught in his living room and then moved into the corridor (走廊) for more space. But soon, the corridor was full of students, and Liu turned to using one villager’s rice milling (碾米) room as a classroom. The other villagers also raised money to buy desks, chairs, and a blackboard. Later, as the number of students grew, Liu finally set up a classroom in the yard of a villager’s house.
Every summer, Liu comes to the village to teach English. He has been doing it for ten years. The villagers like him and call him the “yard teacher”. Liu also loves his life and work in the village. “Teaching is an important part of my life. I am willing to help these children improve themselves step by step,” he said.

2 . Last year, I went to Beijing Qizhi Special Education School for community service (社区服务). Before we took the bus, my friend asked me a question: “Why are you here?” I did not know how to answer the question. The school was not far from my school, but it looked like it was in a different world. A group of children were waiting for us. A boy walked toward me. He held my hands and pulled me to the ground. I kissed the earth and tasted nature. I could not understand what he was doing at first, so I was very angry. Though I was very angry, I controlled my anger.
A teacher stopped this awkward (尴尬的) silence when she shouted at the boy. “What are you doing right here, right now?” she said. “You will never see your mom again if you keep doing this. Now, say sorry!” “Sorry,” he cried fearfully and nervously. I said nothing, but I realized something about this child. After lunch I asked the teacher for information about the child’s parents.
She said that the child was very different from other students because of an illness. His family could not afford to treat him. He needed the kindness of his family, but they had abandoned him. So he depended on the support from the teachers and community service workers like us.
I suddenly realized I could answer the question my friend asked me at the beginning of the day.
Community service workers help others and make everyone feel better. There are so many people in the world that need help. Playing with lonely children may not make a big difference. But it can light a corner in the children’s hearts, making them know they are loved by people.

The shopkeeper answered, “The pear is ¥4 and the apple is ¥6 per kilo.” David couldn’t believe his ears and looked at the shopkeeper. The shopkeeper noticed this immediately and let him wait for a while. The woman took the fruits, paid for them and left happily.
After the woman left, the shopkeeper looked toward David and said, “I didn’t want to cheat you.” He continued after a stop, “The woman lives in my neighborhood. She is a poor mother of four. I have tried many times to help her but she refuses to take any help from anyone in our neighborhood. Then I think of this way to help her. Whenever she comes, I sell her fruits at a low price. 6 . This is a story of a man who works in my factory. I have seen him for years, but I didn’t know him very well. He was a little bit weird (怪异的). He always wore an old red hat and carried a rubbish bag. He seemed to have no friend, and was always alone. He usually spent his break time and his lunchtime walking around in the factory and collecting used tins (金属罐). Maybe he was too poor, I guess. But I didn’t care much about him.
One day, I was fixing one of the broken machines in the factory when this “tin man” came with his bag. As usual, he picked up the tins, which were all around the place. My manager was standing there, watching me.
When I finished my job, I heard my manager ask the “tin man” about what he was going to do with those tins he had collected. I never even thought about this kind of question, because I always assumed that “tin man” would take those tins to the recycling center.
Unexpectedly, the “tin man” answered, “I will give these tins to my neighbor. He has been ill for many years and cannot work. He is too poor to buy daily bread now.”
I was so shocked to hear that, so I asked him, “You mean you collect all those tins just to help your neighbor?”
“I know this does not help much,” he said. “But I give everything to him, because he cannot work. He needs help.”
It was the most beautiful moment in my life. We are all able to help others no matter we are rich or poor. It has made me feel humble (谦卑的) every day since then.

7 . In the world, there are lots of people who want to help out. Many join organizations (管理) run by their governments, for example, the Peace Corps in the United States and Voluntary Service Overseas in Britain. Since the terrible earthquake took place in Wenchuan, more than 200 thousand volunteers across China have been helping there! They do all kinds of work or come up with ways to help improve life. Some offer their professional skills for free. Others have no qualifications (资历), but they love to work hard to help.
One of the most famous volunteers in the world was Mother Teresa. She could be the best volunteer because she gave her life to helping the poorest people of Calcutta. She helped the homeless, cared for the sick, gave out food, and became the mother of those without families.
Now more and more teenagers actively look for volunteering opportunities (机会), too. They volunteer because they think it will be fun or they will learn something. They also like the idea of being helpful to others, even if it is just handing out books for the teacher. As they get older, these reasons are still the same, but there are other important reasons for volunteering such as learning on—the-job, getting work experience, and improving their social life.
All volunteers bring joy to the people they help in so many ways. They might read books to the blind, fix up broken homes, find ways to get water for villagers. Could you be a volunteer? What kind of volunteer work could you do? There is someone in the world who needs you.

In 1971, MSF began to send trained doctors all over the world to help people who have suffered from disasters such as wars and illness. Chris is a doctor from France who has traveled to many places to organize programs that help people .

When doctors finish a few tasks, they might be sent to an emergency (紧急的) task after a disaster, such as an earthquake.
But why would doctors leave a comfortable life and a good pay to join MSF? According to Chris, the experience they have is a great help in their life. 9 . Garbage sorting (垃圾分类) began on July 1, 2019. However, I live in my building with the other 238 families and we live with a similar system (系统) for years. Here, I’d like to talk about our experiences.
In October 2016, the government (政府) chose our neighborhood to be part of a pilot (试点的) program for garbage sorting. To help the program run successfully, we set up a volunteer team. I am one of the volunteers. However, several of us didn’t know if we could lead people in the building to change their habits.
We began with the usual ways. We handed out notices around the neighborhood. We also went door to door to tell people how to sort garbage. However, they made many mistakes. For example, many didn’t know wet rubbish meant food waste. Instead, they thought it meant rubbish that was wet. Some even refused to sort their garbage.
As a result, we volunteers had to do lots of sorting ourselves. At the same time, we went around explaining the rules. We kept talking to those people who refused to sort their garbage. We let them know we could help to sort garbage for them. It was a matter of time and patience. We believed they would finally change their mind.
Six months later, we were successful in changing people’s mind. People in my building began sorting their garbage. Some even joined us to help us.
I think face-to-face talks played an important role. Sometimes, these talks led to conflicts, but they were much more effective (有效的) than handing out notices. It was interesting to see what happened. I hope everyone knows garbage sorting is good for them.

10 . Aru Village is located by Lake Ra’og Co in Xizang, China. Many years ago, people from the village used rafts (筏子) to go across the lake and pick up rubbish in the water. The villagers revered (敬畏) the environment, so they started this practice to keep their lake clean.
Later, a bridge was established over the lake, so villagers no longer needed to use rafts to cross it. But the idea of cleaning the lake stayed. Tsering Dondrup, a village official who used to go to school on rafts, knew how the older villagers picked up rubbish in the lake. He and other officials did a lot to help protect the lake and its ecosystem.
The village has 43 households with 227 people now. A team of 44 people from the village are paid by the government to take turns to help keep the lake and nearby forests clean. They are also in charge of cleaning the roads and the area around the lake. They collect the rubbish and take it to the right place to be recycled.
Dampa, a 46-year-old man from the team, started picking up rubbish in the lake 20 years ago.“As part of this team, I can make about 3, 500 yuan a year. I’m happy to do my part in keeping the lake clean,” he said.
Now, Aru Village has become a model village for eco-friendly actions. Lake Ra’og Co gets about 300,000 visitors every year. Village official Xu Cong says the support of both the villagers and the government has helped maintain (保持) the beauty of the area.
