In October 2012, I joined an organization to volunteer to work in Thailand. When I arrived in Thailand, I thought I would be taken to an orphanage （孤儿院）. However, I was told that I had to go to the place where I would live by train alone. And then I knew that my job was to teach English in a school instead of working at an orphanage.
The next day I went to the school and met the kids I would teach. In the classroom, the kids looked at me, saying nothing. No one could speak English. But from their eyes, I knew they were really nervous to learn English, it seemed like a big challenge for me, but that was just what I wanted.
Although I loved the kids and the challenge, my life in Thailand was quite hard at first. I was alone and there was nobody I could talk to. However, I didn’t give up. If I had been afraid of difficulties, I wouldn’t have traveled all the way from England to Thailand to be a volunteer. Little by little, I learned some Thai （泰国语） and started to fall in love with Thailand. Every time I saw the kids’ pleasure of learning English, I was happy and felt that what I was doing was really worthwhile.
Now I’m working in a hospital in Thailand. If you also want to be a volunteer like me, don’t worry too much about the food or the place where you live. After all, as a volunteer, the most important thing is to help people who need help!

2 . In March 2015, during one of the Operation Smile (微笑行动) activities, in a village in Ghana without electricity and water, we met a family with twins. The boy Kofi was strong with a round face and big eyes. However, the girl, Afia, was small, weak and ill.
Afia was born with severe cleft lip (裂唇). She was so ill-fed that she seemed to be disappearing in front of our eyes. Being born with cleft lip makes it really difficult, sometimes, almost impossible to eat.
Her parents, Christiana and Kwame, had never seen a cleft before and they didn’t know what to do. When she was found by Operation Smile staff, Afia, 4 months old, weighed only 1.2 kg. A healthy child should weigh around 6.4 kg at that age. Given the situation, the baby was rushed to a hospital in Accra, but her road to be treated was still long and difficult.
Afia’s family knew that Operation Smile was their only hope. Christiana took Afia to three medical tasks, but the little girl was always too ill to be safely treated. Finally, when Operation Smile brought a medical task to Tamale in November 2016, Afia finally got her life changing surgery (手术).
Dr Clive Duke, a UK doctor and Operation Smile medical volunteer, took Afia back into the arms of her mother. “That moment was one of my most unforgettable experiences with Operation Smile. All who were watching had a huge smile and a tear in our eyes as we had the strong feeling that a life had just been saved,” said Clive. “I felt very satisfied with our Operation Smile team and also happy with my work in helping Afia. She still needs further surgery, but the future is there for her now.”

Today, more and more people try to become a volunteer. The meaning of the word “volunteer” may be a little different in different countries, but it usually means “one who offers his or her services.” It is difficult to help others all the time, but if you insist in (坚持) that, you will be very happy. If you have a lot of free time, you should take an active part in activities, such as taking care of sick people, working in a homeless children’s home, and picking up garbage from beaches and parks.
Jenny, a good friend of mine, came back from India with a new idea of being a volunteer. Helping others is also a kind of happiness. What’s more, when we help others, it can be a way of helping ourselves. When we learn how to give others, we can further our morals (道德规范). She worked in a home for sick people. She helped wash clothes and passed out lunch. She also fed the weak people and tried to cheer them up. She said that if all of us can give a helping hand as a volunteer, our world will be full of love and that will make our world nicer and nicer.

Danay Ferguson loves reading. She always does the reading after she finishes her homework. Her parents often tell her to go to bed early. The Harry Potter books are Danny’s favorite. But to Danny, all the books have a magic of their own.
Danay wanted to open a bookstore, so she did a survey（调查）in the neighborhoods around her. She found that in low-income（低收入）neighborhoods there might be only one book for every 300 kids. Danay was shocked at the result, so she decided to do something to help kids do the reading.
Just at the age of eight, she started a group to help kids get books. Her Reading Heart collects（收集）old books from people. Then Danay, her family and friends give those books to kids in schools, hospitals and low-income neighborhoods.
On visits to schools, Danay usually has a big party. She dances with the kids, and gives them free T-shirts and books. After the kids get their books, Danay always tells them a rule. “You can keep the book for as long as you like,” she says. “But when you finish it, give it to a friend or classmate. In this way, kids get to read even more, yet still have a book to keep.

6 . Raden Roro Hendarti is a special librarian (图书管理员) who is lending books to children in exchange for (交换) waste they collect. She is the starter of the mobile library called Limbah Pustaka.
Each weekday, 48-year-old Raden rides her three-wheeler with books at its back to Muntang village to exchange for cups, bags and other waste for books. She wants to help clean up the environment and get kids to read more at the same time.
As soon as Raden shows up, little children, many accompanied by their mothers, run to her mobile library. They are all carrying rubbish bags and Raden’s three-wheeler quickly fills up with them as the books fly out. Raden is happy that the kids are going to spend less time on online games. “Let’s build a culture of literacy(文化素养) from young age. We should also take care of our waste in order to save the Earth from waste,” says Raden. Each week, she collects about 100kg of waste. She has got about 6, 000 books to lend and wants to take the mobile service to neighbouring areas as well.
Kevin Alamsyah, an 11-year-old reader, often searches for waste in the village. “When there is too much waste, our environment will become dirty and it’s not healthy. That’s why I look for waste to borrow a book,” he says.

7 . My name is Sam. I joined a club called “passing help” last month. Now let me tell you why I joined it.
One evening this May, on my way home my old car broke down. It was 25 miles from my home. I wanted to get a ride, but there was no car. It was also hard to take a taxi. I decided to take a bus home. I went to a bus stop nearby. After a while, a bus came, but it did not go to my town. And the bus driver was a young woman. She was kind and she told me which bus I should take. I waited there for about thirty minutes, but no bus came. At last, a car came to me and a woman came out of the car. She was just the bus driver.
“When I reached the bus station, I got to know that the bus to your town couldn’t come, so I returned here. I just can’t leave you here,” she said, “Get in my car and I will take you back to your home.”
“It is a long way.” I said.

8 . Jack Berne is a student from Sydney, Australia. He got a lot of attention after sorting A Fiver for a Farmer, which helped raise 1 million dollars for drought-affected（受旱灾影响的）Australian farmers in 2018.
Berne said he saw a video at school that showed how droughts have affected children and animals. This made him want to do something about it.
Now, the 12-year-old boy is one of 430 children who are taking part in an global campaign（活动）for Lego called Rebuild the World. The children helped build a machine in Denmark— a 4-meter-wide globe（地球仪）made of Lego bricks.
The globe, which took 2, 700 hours to build, features buildings designed by the children. Berne’s creation, which he calls Farming Home, is a farm that has everything people need to live comfortably— a stream for water, crops for food, and a windmill（风车）for power. “To think that something I created in my living room is now part of a huge machine at the Lego House in Denmark is just crazy,” Berne said.
Berne is continuing to help Australian farmers. “We asked people to bring in an ‘all-Australian’ lunch. I asked people to buy in-season Australian produce（农产品）, check their labels（标签）and buy Australian products,” Berne said.

10 . Everyone dreams of changing the world. But can teenagers really make a difference? And how can they go about it?
Michael Norton’s book 365 Ways to Change the World is a good starting point. The book gives an idea or task for every single day of the year. The tasks include offering to work at a local homeless shelter (庇护所) and planting a tree.
The book says that one simple act, no matter how small, can help someone in need. It may even influence (影响) other teens to do something.
Nathan Anthony, a student at Maple High School in Modesto, California, US, agrees. “It is impossible to get anything in life without giving something to someone or working hard at school or workplace,” Anthony said.
Another Maple student, Ariane Mota, has the same idea. “Giving is our way of repaying those who help us,” she said. “Whether it is a helping hand or a donation, we should help others to make their day or life better.”
But how often do teens see peers (同龄人) helping a stranger or doing something nice for someone?
According to Anthony, not a lot. He and Mota both believe this needs to be changed.
“I help my friends by telling them that their lives are better than those poorer people,” Anthony said. “Humor is also a great tool.”
So whether you’re helping to find a cure (疗法) for bad illness or simply smiling at a stranger, do something every day to help change the world for the better.
