2 . Recently, my daughter reminded me of someone we saw at the train station a few years ago.
That day, my daughter and I were waiting for our train. We went to buy some drinks, and then we saw the old man. Dressed poorly, he was standing in front of the counter (柜台) while counting coins slowly to buy just one bottle of water. The businessman behind him said impatiently, “Hey! Can’t you be quick? Some of us have a train to catch!” Hearing this, the old man seemed to be very embarrassed, so he walked away quietly at once.
It was my turn. I bought our two drinks and the old man’s water as well. We walked up to him and gave him the water with a smile. After walking away, my daughter complained, “Dad, the old man is so impolite. He didn’t even say ‘thank you’ to us!” I told her that we did this not to get a “thank you” from other people. We just wanted to be nice.
Now, my daughter always reaches out to help people. She waves, makes eye contact (接触) and says “hi” to people on the street. She holds doors for people. She scoops up things that other people drop.
When I mentioned this recently, she seemed surprised. I asked her why she was so kind all the time. She said, “Because it is just right to be that way.” Then she added, “And because I see you do that all the time.”

Cheng helped both children become more confident (自信的) and outgoing. “Cheng is just like our mother,” Tan said. “I can talk to her about anything.”

A few years ago, a friend gave me a restaurant gift card, and I picked a sunny Sunday afternoon to use it. It felt good taking my family to a nice restaurant. The meal was delicious, and we all had a good time together. The gift card covered almost all of the check (帐单). I reached into my wallet to get enough money to cover the rest. I saw two bills (钞票) inside. The first would cover the rest of the check. The second would cover the check and give the waitress a nice tip (小费). I reached down to pick the first one.
At that moment, my mind went back to 30 years ago. I was working in a restaurant much like this one. It was long hours of hard work for low pay. I remembered seeing the waitresses worrying about how they were going to pay the rent. I remembered the pain in their eyes and the sadness in their faces at the end of the day.
I was back in the present again, with my fingers touching the smaller bill in my wallet. I smiled, pushed it back down and picked out the larger bill. I folded it around the gift card and covered both of them with the check. As we all got up from the table, I handed them to the hard-working waitress. “You keep the change,” I said with a smile and a happy heart.

9 . The early winter storm was much worse than what my parents had expected. “Sweetheart,” Dad said to Mom, “I’ve got to get out of bed and go to check on the turkeys.” When Dad left the house, Mom worried that he would not be able to make it to the farm. The snow was whipping (吹打) around our little house at 40 miles per hour, and there was deep snow on the road.
At 7: 00 am, Mom was ready to call for help when Dad’s truck appeared on the road. He nearly fell down on the kitchen floor. “Call Gurney,” he said. “Have him tell the neighbors to come up to the farm and get a free turkey for Christmas dinner. As near as I can tell, we have 500 dead birds,” he said, shaking his head in sadness. “Give me a minute to get warm and cleaned up.”
That morning Gurney told our neighbors the sad story. Then he asked them to tell more people where they could get a turkey. As the sun came out, hundreds of cars drove up the snowy road to the Fowler farm. Seeing the birds lying here and there, friends felt sorry for us. But our feelings changed as more people arrived.
Nearly all of the birds, which still had to be cleaned, were paid for in cash (现金). Knowing that a sad story was having a happy ending, neighbors talked and even laughed. Often more money was given than what the birds would have cost at the shop.

10 . On June 17, 2023, 16-year-old Cao Chenzhe from Jiangsu gave away 5,000 yuan to the Disabled Persons’ Federation in Jiangsu to help children. The money was for his brave act of using the Heimlich maneuver (海姆立克急救法) to save a classmate’s life.
Cao clearly remembered that day. One evening in March, while having dinner at the school canteen, he noticed a classmate’s face turning purple as he tried to breathe. “Oh no, something is stuck in his throat!” Cao quickly realized the problem and performed the Heimlich maneuver. Cao learned the Heimlich maneuver during a safety education class at Jiangyan Licai Experimental School. “The teacher showed us the process in detail and we practiced with each other,” said Cao. The school organizes safety education classes every month and encourages students to take online courses on the Ministry of Education’s online safety education platform (教育部学校安全教育平台).
Sun Fu, the vice principal of Suzhou Foreign Language School, said that safety education should have different forms such as competitions, and role-playing activities. “The more forms the activities are, the more interested the students will be,” Sun said.
