2 . The early winter storm was much worse than what my parents had expected. “Sweetheart,” Dad said to Mom, “I’ve got to get out of bed and go to check on the turkeys.” When Dad left the house, Mom worried that he would not be able to make it to the farm. The snow was whipping (吹打) around our little house at 40 miles per hour, and there was deep snow on the road.
At 7: 00 am, Mom was ready to call for help when Dad’s truck appeared on the road. He nearly fell down on the kitchen floor. “Call Gurney,” he said. “Have him tell the neighbors to come up to the farm and get a free turkey for Christmas dinner. As near as I can tell, we have 500 dead birds,” he said, shaking his head in sadness. “Give me a minute to get warm and cleaned up.”
That morning Gurney told our neighbors the sad story. Then he asked them to tell more people where they could get a turkey. As the sun came out, hundreds of cars drove up the snowy road to the Fowler farm. Seeing the birds lying here and there, friends felt sorry for us. But our feelings changed as more people arrived.
Nearly all of the birds, which still had to be cleaned, were paid for in cash (现金). Knowing that a sad story was having a happy ending, neighbors talked and even laughed. Often more money was given than what the birds would have cost at the shop.

3 . On June 17, 2023, 16-year-old Cao Chenzhe from Jiangsu gave away 5,000 yuan to the Disabled Persons’ Federation in Jiangsu to help children. The money was for his brave act of using the Heimlich maneuver (海姆立克急救法) to save a classmate’s life.
Cao clearly remembered that day. One evening in March, while having dinner at the school canteen, he noticed a classmate’s face turning purple as he tried to breathe. “Oh no, something is stuck in his throat!” Cao quickly realized the problem and performed the Heimlich maneuver. Standing behind his classmate, Cao pressed hard into his chest with upward thrusts (推力). After trying many times, a large rice ball came out of the classmate’s throat.
Cao learned the Heimlich maneuver during a safety education class at Jiangyan Licai Experimental School. “The teacher showed us the process in detail and we practiced with each other,” said Cao. The school organizes safety education classes every month and encourages students to take online courses on the Ministry of Education’s online safety education platform (教育部学校安全教育平台).
Sun Fu, the vice principal of Suzhou Foreign Language School, said that safety education should have different forms such as competitions, and role-playing activities. “The more forms the activities are, the more interested the students will be,” Sun said.

Jerry is a world-famous mountain climber. He has climbed many high mountains in the world. Starting in 2015, he and his friends spent two years on an adventure in South America, covering 7,800 miles. He was even named “Adventure of the Year” by a famous geography magazine in 2018.
Although Jerry had achieved great success, he didn’t feel fulfilled. He asked himself, “Is it enough to climb the highest mountains? Am I doing something helpful? How can I turn my adventures into something that can help the world?”
Jerry learned that scientists need plants, rocks and water samples (样本) from the places far away to do research. But scientists can’t get there themselves as such places are hard to reach—only the bravest adventurers can make it. Jerry thought he could do something to help. He then came up with an idea. He set up a team of top adventurers to collect samples for scientists. By studying the samples, scientists could know more about the earth and find ways to protect it.
Recently Jerry and his adventure friends have discovered a special plant life of Mountain Qomolangma. The samples they brought back have helped scientists to know how plants live in extreme (极端的) conditions. For Jerry, this kind of adventure is most satisfying. “Such adventures had made us see life in a different way. Now, being the best climber isn’t important for me. What matters is doing something helpful while climbing the mountains. There is still much more we can do.” Jerry said to a newspaper.
