1 . Do you want to be a volunteer? Maybe you need some ideas. Here is some advice.
Help kids learn and grow. Be a big brother or sister at an after-school care centre. You can help little kids to learn or play with them.
Give back during the holidays. Serve dinner to the homeless, volunteer at an old people’s home, or give out toys to kids.
Help at an animal shelter (庇护所). Most shelters need volunteers to keep the cats and dogs happy and take them to exercise. And when you’re walking dogs you get some exercise, too.
Protect the environment. Take part in a park “clean up day”. Plant a tree. Join a group to work together to protect a river.
Help sick people. Helping others can make you feel good. When you make sick people happy, you also feel happy. If you have some hobbies, find a way to do them all. For example, if you love kids and are good at painting and dancing, visit a children’s hospital and teach them these interesting things.

Eric: You mean volunteers pay for a cup of coffee for someone poor to have it later?
Josh: Yeah. A cup of coffee is not much, but on cold winter days like today, it might warm them up a little. And maybe their hearts, too.
Eric: But will Flora Cafe really give this cup of coffee to anyone later?
Josh: Come on. I’ve known the shopkeeper well. He’s an honest man. He’s got a blackboard in the shop that says how many cups have been paid for and how many have been given out.
Eric: But how will he know who to give? Anyone can ask for it, even if they’re not poor.
Josh: True, but then I guess he’ll just have to believe in people.
Eric: Perhaps. But will poor people go and ask for free coffee? Won’t they worry about losing face?
Josh: Why do you always say things like that?
Eric: Well, it may happen.
Josh: Yeah, I know. But I still think it’s a good thing to do, and it gets people to care about others.

3 . If man’s best friend is a dog, then who is a dog’s best friend? That would be Rover, Glow, Ivan or Raina. These four dogs donated (捐献) blood (血液) to other dogs. And they did it without having to travel far from home. They visited an animal bloodmobile (捐血车).
Similar to the Red Cross vehicles for men, the University of Pennsylvania's animal bloodmobile goes to where the donors are to make it easier to give. Kym Marryott is the manager of Penn’s Animal Blood Bank. “You don’t really think about it until you need it,” Marryott said. “Just like us, dogs need blood, too.”
However, not every dog can donate blood. Dogs must have the correct blood type, weigh at least 55 pounds and be younger than 8 years old. About 150 dogs take part in the program. Each donates three or four pints (品脱) a year, which can help animals in need. One pint can save at least three dogs. Just like people, the dogs can get a snack and a heart-shaped “U of P Blood Donor” sticker after giving. They also receive free dog food to take home.
Sandy Lucas brought her 7-year-old black dog, Raina, to the bloodmobile last week. “I was excited that she had the right blood which could help another dog out,” she said—“We’ll do it again.”

4 . Walking around Nanting village in Guangzhou, one can see bright flowers “blooming (绽放)” on street corners and walls. But they are actually made of felt (羊毛毡) and have been “planted” on the grass. The gardener is a college student Luo Shengtian.
“I’m sad about the broken corners when I’m riding my bicycle. They can hurt children, too.” So Luo decided to make felt flowers. Onsite, he sticks clay to the broken area, puts the flower in the clay and then adds green felt to make grass and help fix the flower in place.
He once saw that a wall of a shop was broken, so he and his friend fixed it using another of his creations. He was a little worried as the shop was a private place, and he worried the owner might not like the flower. However, the owner was pleased and surprised.
Later, many volunteers wanted to join in his activities. Luo set up a WeChat group which now has over 200 members. Luo taught his flower making skills to them.
He plans to create a national map to show where other flowers have been spread before he graduates in June, 2022. The project has helped him to learn more about himself. “I was rather shy. 7 . Back in New York, I am fighting fires as the assistant captain (副队长) of a volunteer fire company.
I still remember my first fire. I was the second volunteer on the scene (现场). The captain was talking with the homeowner, who was surely having one of the worst days of her life. At midnight, she was standing outside in the heavy rain, under an umbrella, barefoot (赤脚的), while her house was in flames (在燃烧中). The other volunteer, who had arrived just before me, was asked to go inside and save the homeowner’s dog. The captain then waved (招手) me over. He said, “Bezos, I need you to go upstairs past the fire, and get this woman a pair of shoes.” So, not exactly what I was hoping for, but off I went up the stairs, down the hall, past the “real” firefighters, who were pretty much done putting out the fire at this point, into the bedroom to get a pair of shoes.
Now I know what you’re thinking, but I’m no hero. (Laughter) I carried the shoes downstairs where I met the other volunteer with the valuable dog. We took our treasures outside to the homeowner, where, not surprisingly, his received much more attention than mine.
A few weeks later, the company received a letter from the homeowner thanking us for saving her home. The act of kindness she noted above all others was that someone had even gotten her a pair of shoes.
Here, I would offer this reminder: don’t wait. Don’t wait until you make your first million to make a difference in somebody’s life. If you have something to give, give it now.
Not every day is going to offer us a chance to save somebody’s life, but every day offers us an opportunity to affect (影响) one. So get in the game. Save the shoes.
