1 . The day starts early for Tang Shengli, a bird protection volunteer in Lanshan, Yongzhou, Hunan province. At about 5 a.m., the 61-year-old is in uniform and ready to start his day’s work protecting and recording migratory birds (候鸟).

Located on the northern side of the Nanling Mountains, Lanshan is an important passageway for migratory birds. From September to December every year, more than 240 kinds of migratory birds fly from Siberia to Australia via (经由) Hunan. In the past 11 years, Tang has recorded more than 120 kinds of such birds with his camera. “The flight calls of the migratory birds at night attract me so much that I cannot sleep. 4. 我只想记录他们的生活。” Tang says.

When Tang joined the Hunan Bird Protection Organization (组织) in 2013, he knew he faced a hard task. A number of migratory birds were lost each year because people killed them for trade. Many villagers didn’t think bird hunting was illegal (违法), and some made a living from it. At that time, during the day, Tang handed out brochures to villagers in Lanshan to raise public attention of bird protection, while at night, he went deep into the forests to stop illegal hunting.

Clothes Donation (捐赠) Box

Have you ever put your old clothes into the donation box in your neighborhood? If not, you can do it right now because the clothes donation is becoming a trend (趋势) in Urumqi (乌鲁木齐).

“From time to time, my mother clears out the clothes which I no longer wear. You know, we teenagers are growing fast. I think it’s a good way to help others.” Lin Tao, a junior student says.

“I often pick out some of my clothes which are out of style after going shopping. Then I’ll put them into the donation box.” Miss Li, a pretty young lady says.

“That seems like a good idea. Some clothes in the box are quite new. People can either wear them or use them to make things such as handbags and pencil cases.” Mrs. Wang, an old woman says, “Sometimes I also look through the box for some nice clothes.”

However, there are some problems along with the popularity of clothes donation. Recently, a UTV reporter from Focus on the City has made a survey. Here are the results:

◆The box is full of clothes in a short time. There is no more room for people to give away clothes.

◆Some people sell the clothes in the donation box for making money instead of wearing them.

◆Some communities set the box in unsuitable places, so there are few clothes in it.

◆Many clothes are too old and shabby (破烂的).

“What’s worse.” one of the workers in a community added, “we quite often see people throw rubbish into the box when they pass by. We’ve tried to stop them several times but failed. It has been the most serious problem since we set the box.”

In order to make the donation box work in a useful way, our government is taking action. Clothes donation will be better-organized and it’ll be more convenient for people in need to take the clothes away.

10 . 阅读下面短文,根据短文内容回答问题。

In 2004, the world came alive to The Chorus, a French film which tells us how a teacher brings love and hope to his students through music and then makes a difference to their lives.

Now the similar story happened at Haiga Primary School in Liupanshui, Southwest China’s Guizhou Province, where Gu Ya, a 37-year-old teacher, helps children in mountainous areas learn to read music, play instruments, and start rock bands.

In September 2016, Gu Ya, a then rock singer, arrived at the school as a Chinese teacher. “When I got there, there was only a teacher and fewer than ten students in two grades. It was really surprising. The kids were too shy to look at me in the eyes,” Gu said. “The day I arrived, Zheng Long, the headmaster of the school, told me that we had to care about not only the children’s studies and lives, but also their health in mind, helping them learn to dream and be more confident.”

To open the hearts of the students and bring them confidence, Gu decided to teach them music. He taught students in grades one and two ukulele (尤克里里) and guitar, and students in grades three and four drums or bass guitar (贝斯吉他). In 2018, the school started its first rock band called Yu (Meeting). Not long after that, the second band “Unknown Boy”, and the other bands “Naughty Elf” and “Haiga Shaonian” were also set up one after another.

Zheng Long was surprised at the power of music. Many children who learned to play music became more outgoing and got better grades in exams. “Music brings them a part of their dream. It was the old guitar that brought new life to Haiga Primary School.”

Xiong Ting, a 15-year-old girl, was a student there before. “Thanks to Mr. Gu, I was no longer a shy and quiet girl. I hope I could become a music teacher like him and bring change and hope to others.”
