3 . If you have no special plans for your holidays, why not spend your time helping others? More and more people in the USA volunteer to spend their school holidays working for and helping others. And they don’t do it for money. Here are some of their stories.

4 . Half a century ago, a boy called William Lindsay in Britain had never thought that a dream of his would drive him to spend ten years in a foreign country. When in primary school, he loved studying maps. The saw-tooth (锯齿般的) line in China caught his eye. He decided to visit the line, that is, the Great Wall of China.

Driven by this dream, Lindsay set off on his Great Wall journey in 1984. However, he didn’t realize its difficulty. Only a few days later, he became ill and had to give up his plan. After returning to Britain, he began to exercise more often. He even learned some basic Chinese.

With full preparation, Lindsay set off again in 1987. The hike took him about 160 days in total. This tall man encountered difficulties when he was found to be walking alone along the Yulin Great Well in Shaanxi. “Where is he from? What is he doing here?” the local villagers wondered. Finally, the police came. Lindsay tried to explain his love for the Wall but without success. As a result, he had to leave.

Nothing could stop his strong will. One year later, Lindsay continued his journey from Inner Mongolia. After many difficult days of hiking along the Great Wall, he was finally able to arrive at Shanhaiguan, a major pass at the eastern end of the Wall and the end of his great journey.

Through this trip, Lindsay developed a deeper understanding of the Great Wall. Since then, he has made great efforts to protect it. Later, he organized more than 120 volunteers to pick up litter on the Great Wall. Lindsay soon realized the difficulty of collecting all the litter on the Wall. He started to give speeches around the country and began looking for more volunteers.

Lindsay’s wife and two sons have now also joined him in protecting the Great Wall. The British man said he would spend the rest of his years in China—for his family and for the Wall.

Zhang Ning was     1     volunteer at the Winter Olympics in 2022. She shared her stories and     2     (feel) on the radio. “I was 10 years old when Beijing hosted (主办) the Summer Olympics in 2008. When I was watching TV and     3     (enjoy) the wonderful actions, I was     4     (excite).”

She came to know that holding the Olympics was a chance to tell China’s stories to the world, showing the world a more beautiful China. “It’s a wonderful experience to be a volunteer at the Winter Olympics 14 years later. 8 . Last year, I went to Beijing Qizhi Special Education School for community service (社区服务). Before we took the bus, my friend asked me a question: “Why are you here?” I did not know how to answer the question. The school was not far from my school, but it looked like it was in a different world. A group of children were waiting for us. A boy walked toward me. He held my hands and pulled me to the ground. I kissed the earth and tasted nature. I could not understand what he was doing at first, so I was very angry. Though I was very angry, I controlled my anger.

A teacher stopped this awkward (尴尬的) silence when she shouted at the boy. “What are you doing right here, right now?” she said. “You will never see your mom again if you keep doing this. Now, say sorry!” “Sorry,” he cried fearfully and nervously. I said nothing, but I realized something about this child. After lunch I asked the teacher for information about the child’s parents.

She said that the child was very different from other students because of an illness. His family could not afford to treat him. He needed the kindness of his family, but they had abandoned him. So he depended on the support from the teachers and community service workers like us.

I suddenly realized I could answer the question my friend asked me at the beginning of the day.

Community service workers help others and make everyone feel better. There are so many people in the world that need help. Playing with lonely children may not make a big difference. But it can light a corner in the children’s hearts, making them know they are loved by people.
