5 . Last Monday, a school bus driver made a quick stop to go to the bathroom in a gas station while on the way to school. But the bus didn’t stop without him. Moments after the driver got off, the bus began to run down the mountain, with 27 young students on the bus.
But luckily, an 11-year-old student, David, went to the driver’s seat and began to drive the school bus. He couldn’t stop the bus running down the mountain, but he stopped the bus from running into a car. At last he stopped the bus on a bridge and luckily everyone on the bus was all right.
David’s mother got surprised when she learned about what her son did. “I saw the bus. It nearly ran down the bridge,” she told the reporter. “I couldn’t believe that he could stop the bus all by himself.”
David kept very quiet about the accident, but he was really a hero. “If he didn’t drive the bus, all the students might go down into the river with the bus,” said Brian, a teacher in the school. “He saved all of those children’s lives.”

8 . Passage C
It was a Christmas night. I was an unlucky nurse who had to work on such a beautiful festival. I wasn’t happy about it. When I was complaining about it, three people appeared at my desk — a tired woman and two children.
“Are you all sick?” I asked doubtfully because they seemed all right. “Yes,” the woman answered weakly and lowered her head.
But when they started to present their problems, things became unclear. One child had a fever, but his temperature was OK. The other child had an earache, but she could not tell me which ear hurt. It seemed that the mother was pretending(假装)to cough.
Something was wrong. But I only explained that it might take a while before a doctor could meet them. “Take your time, please,” said the mother. I checked their charts — no address. Suddenly I knew, they were homeless while the hospital was warm.
The family huddled(蜷缩)together under the Christmas tree, smiling and talking with each other sweetly. Quietly, I went back to the nurse station and told them what happened in the waiting room. It was just like God sending us a gift on Christmas Day. The nurse station suddenly came back to life. All the nurses went into action for “a Christmas emergency(急诊)”.
We took out our meals for our Christmas “patients”. We also put together oranges and apples as presents. We tried to give them more than their needs of a family who only wanted a warm place on Christmas night. Later, the little girl kissed me and said, “Thanks for being our angel(天使).”

Around us most people are kind-hearted and want to give someone a helping hand. Here are the moments that can be remembered forever. |
(From Mrs. Wang , Guizhou)On May 1st , when I was on my way back to my hometown, I lost my purse. I was told over the train’s loudspeaker(广播)that my purse was at the railway station’s lost and found office. But the train had already started. Seeing this, a kind girl who worked on the train lent me some money. I went back to the railway station and got my purse. I am still thankful to the girl and the person who found my purse. |
(From Scott, Guangzhou)When I was a little boy, I went fishing with my elder sister one summer afternoon. Suddenly I slipped(滑入)into the river. The next thing that I can remember is my father holding me in the hospital. Today I still don’t know who saved me from that river. From then on, I decided to help other people whenever I can. |
(From Tina, Shenzhen) One of my neighbors is an old man who cannot hear anything. He makes a living by recycling the waste. Our other neighbors don’t like this. But in my opinion, it’s his way to support his family. Last Sunday after I cleaned my house, I put some paper boxes in his garden and left my rubbish beside my door. The next day when I was going out, I found nothing outside but a note. It says, “I have thrown away your rubbish. You are a nice girl. Thanks!” |

10 . As doctors were racing against the time to save patients infected with COVID-19 (新型冠状病毒), thousands of volunteers also stepped up to play supporting roles in fighting against the epidemic (疫情) in Wuhan. And among them are some foreigners.
Philippe Klein, a French doctor, who has been in Wuhan for six years, chose to stick to his post. Since outbreak (爆发) of the epidemic, Klein has been busy caring for foreign patients in the city. He said, “I like Wuhan and the friendly people of Wuhan. I am a doctor, so I have to do my duty. I’m proud that I stayed.”
Sina Karami from Iran works as a barista (咖啡师) at a cafe. It has been two years since she and her brother lived in Wuhan. After the outbreak of the epidemic, Sina chose to stay. There are several hospitals near the cafe treating patients with COVID-19. Her cafe delivered coffee to nearby hospitals free every day. Sina said, “I won’t leave Wuhan at this difficult moment. The fearlessness of the medical staff impresses me, and I will also not retreat—instead, I will continue to provide help for the medical staff.”
Haroon Nomaan, a Pakistan (巴基斯坦) engineer working for Lenovo in Wuhan, also volunteered to help translate some Chinese documents in English and Urdu (乌尔都语). “Whenever I’m needed, I’ll be happy to help others.” he said.
