1 . Earlier this week I went to an eye doctor. Since several diagnoses（诊断）showed that I was about to go blind, I had to go for a second check. I have just turned 30. In the waiting room a man began to talk with me. I’m a very private person and I actually didn’t want to have a conversation with a stranger, but ended up telling him why I was there. This complete stranger expressed more sympathy（同情）than nearly every person that I am close to. After a minute, he got up and walked over to hand me something. I thought it would be a card with good wishes or his business card, so I reached out. However, it was money and it was not just a small amount. I was very surprised and tried to refuse his kind offer, but he replied, “If you get some good news today, you can go and celebrate with a nice dinner. If it’s bad news, you can also get yourself a drink.” At that moment I didn’t know what to say and I don’t think I did a very good job of accepting his generosity（慷慨）.

Now, I’m still waiting to hear back from the doctor, but the signs are not good. I would probably need that drink, but the kindness of a stranger has helped me get through it.

Thank you, Sir. You are really too kind. What you gave me that day is so much more than money. I not only appreciate（感激）it greatly, but also promise to pay it forward.

Many people in the community of Seal Beach knew “Donut City”. It was a donut shop which had been serving its community with the tastiest donuts in     1     world for the last 28 years. And now it was payback time.

John and Stella used to open up     2    （they）donut shop every morning at 4:30 a.m., without ever     3    （take）a day off. So when Stella stopped showing up recently, customers asked John about her absence. He told them that Stella was     4    （serious）ill and had to stay in hospital for a few weeks.     5     John was really down, he continued to run the shop     6     himself. However, he would return to Stella’s side after a day’s work. After one of John’s regular     7    （customer）heard about his story, she came up with an idea: if everyone in the community bought all of his donuts, John could close his shop early to look after his wife. She posted her idea to a community social media page, and immediately the locals stepped up and     8    （buy） donuts at the store.

For the last few weeks, John sold out all his donuts many hours     9    （early）than usual.

He     10    （move）by all his customers, so he expressed his gratitude to them by saying “We are so thankful”.

4 . Years ago, I was travelling with my baby across the country to join my husband. After     1     (drive) for many miles, I was tired and needed to stop     2     a break.

The rest area was mostly deserted, on     3     isolated stretch of interstate highway. I parked the car and carried my infant daughter into the restroom.     4     (come) out again, I saw a middle-aged couple hanging around. It turned out     5     they were waiting for us! The lady said, “We wanted to wait for you to come out and see you safely back into your car. Sometimes rest areas can be     6     (safety) for a young lady. We have a daughter almost your age and we wanted to make sure you get safely back on your way.” I was very touched by their     7     (consider). I thanked them for their kindness. My daughter and I continued our journey and reached our destination safely. I have never got their names,     8     their kindness has never been     9     (forget). Sometimes angels come in disguise and just because you can’t see     10     (they) wings, it doesn’t mean they aren’t angels!

6 . Gordon Wayne walked more than 500 miles on foot to raise money for The National Alliance to End Homelessness, a cause that Wayne has been affected by personally. “Every time I want to give up, I just think about the people I’m doing this for and this is bigger than myself and I have to keep going,” Wayne told World News Tonight.

A year ago, Wayne was homeless and applying to colleges out of his car while he worked 10 hours at an amusement park. Over the summer, Wayne found out he had been accepted to his dream school—Boston College—on full scholarship（奖学金）. In an effort to help 5000 Americans affected by homelessness, Wayne decided to walk from his hometown in Caroline County, Virginia, to his college in Massachusetts.

Along with his journey, Wayne started a GoFundMe page that has since raised more than ＄100,000 for The National Alliance to End Homelessness. “I’m taking a break. I just walked for about 10 miles straight,” Wayne recorded in a video diary for World News Tonight.

Even though the exhaustion, he did not give up and found support from kind people along the way. After a 16-day journey, Wayne arrived at the Boston College. “I’d like to welcome you to the most beautiful campus in the universe: Boston College,” Wayne shared with World News Tonight. Now on campus, Wayne said that he’s finally home. He told World News Tonight that he hopes others will have that same chance. “I hope that I can inspire people to keep walking. You know, keep taking that extra step.” he said. “Even when it hurts, even when it’s hard and you don’t want to. You have to keep going if you want to achieve what you want in life.”

7 . All rescue management organizations in Shenzhen have launched an emergency plan for rescue work and have locations open to the homeless, as strong cold front(寒潮) brings lower temperatures and cold wind to the city, bringing the biggest temperature drop since 2016.

According to the Shenzhen Municipal Rescue Management Station (市救助管理站), it launched an rescue work on Tuesday and has carried out rescue work on the streets to help the homeless find shelter(遮蔽).

In response to the cold front, the city’s three major rescue stations in Futian Bao’an and Longgang districts have strengthened preparedness for this cold front, carried out a 24-hour duty plan, and prepared cotton-padded(垫) clothes, instant noodles, porridge, medicine and other materials for the homeless in the stations.

“So far, the Shenzhen Municipal Rescue Management Station has received six people who came to ask for help after weather warning was announced on Monday,” said Guo Ming, a staff member in the station.

The station will continue to organize social workers and staff members to find the places where the poor people and beggars stay, ask and help them to go to the nearest rescue stations.

For people who have made it clear that they do not want to go to the stations for help, the social workers will give them protective materials such as cotton-padded clothing and quilts(被褥) and follow their condition.
