1 . I’m 17-year-old Nadia Clarke. This summer I got the chance to spend a month helping out in a hospital in Africa as a volunteer. I wanted to study medicine at university, so I thought it was a perfect chance for me to get some experience and to see if I really wanted to be a doctor.
That month changed my life. It introduced me to a world quite different from mine. I was surprised to see how poor and difficult so many local families were. However, I was amazed at the ways that they spent their daily lives positively (乐观地).
I think many people here in the UK haven’t realized how lucky they are. My work in the hospital was hard. I spent a lot of time cleaning floors and changing sheets (床单). In addition, I spent some time looking after the sick. I got the chance to talk to some doctors and ask them about the job. I saw some bad things in the hospital, but none of them changed my mind about being a doctor.
Now, I know exactly what I’m going to do. I want to work for an international organization like the Red Cross or Medecans Frontiers. Many people aren’t so lucky as me in life. I’d like to spend my life helping them, and I can’t wait to get started.

2 . Twenty years ago, I drove a cab for a living. Once I arrived in the middle of the night for a pick-up at an old building. I walked to the door and knocked.
“Just a minute,” answered a weak and elderly voice.
After a long pause, the door opened. A small woman in her 80’s stood in front of me. By her side was a small nylon suitcase. The apartment looked as if no one had lived in it for years. I helped her take the suitcase to the cab. She kept thanking me for my kindness.
When we got in the cab, she gave me an address, then asked, “Could you drive through downtown?”
“It’s not the shortest way,” I answered.
“Oh, I don’t mind,” she said. “I’m in no hurry. I’m on my way to a hospice(收容所). ”
“I don’t have any family left,” she continued “The doctor says I don’t have very long. This would be the last time for me to go downtown.”
I quietly reached over and shut off the meter. For the next few hours, we drove through the city. She showed me the building where she had once worked. We drove through the neighborhood where she and her husband had lived. When the sun rose, she suddenly said, “I’m tired. Let’s go now.”
We drove in silence to the address she had given me. Then we arrived at a low building. Two orderlies came out to the cab.
“How much do I owe you?” she asked.
“Nothing,” I said.
Almost without thinking, I bent and gave her a hug. She held onto me tightly.
“You gave an old woman a little moment of joy,” she said. “Thank you.”
I squeezed her hand, then walked into the dim morning light. On a quick review, I don’t think that I have done anything more important in my life.

Everyone expects to live a relaxing life after retirement(退休), isn’t it? However, this is not the case for Mr. Bai Fangli. In 1987, at the age of 74, he decided to continue working as a pedicab(三轮车) driver. But he didn’t work to make money for himself, but for the poor children who don’t have enough money for education. Once he started, he never stopped.
Life as a pedicab driver was not easy, but Bai kept working hard. Every day he went out in the early morning and wouldn’t return until darkness. He made 20 to 30 yuan each day. After returning home, he put his money in a lunch box carefully. In almost twenty years Bai hardly bought any clothes or a pair of shoes for himself. He gave away all the money he made from his job. By the time he was 88, he had given away more than 350,000 yuan and helped more than 300 poor students return to school.
One winter in 2001, he drove his pedicab to Tianjin YaoHua Middle School and handed 500 yuan to a teacher. He said, “I cannot work anymore, and this is the last money I can give to help others.” 4 years later, he got lung cancer and died when he was 92.
