1 . Once there was an old man. He lived on a hill near the sea. His wife died and his children went to the cities to work.
The old man was lonely and often watched the sea. He found that ships sometimes broke up on the rocks in the sea, since there was no lighthouse to warn them of the danger at night. He decided to keep a window lamp (灯) on for the sailors every night. Maybe his lamp would warn them when their ships came near the rocks on the coast.
The old man felt glad when the thought came to mind. He thought that if he worked an hour longer each day, he could make enough money to pay for the cost of the lamp. He worked every day. In this way he helped many people.
He did this for five years without reward (回报), or the hope of reward. However, good deeds were often found out. The sailors began to send gifts to him from faraway countries. They sent him tea from China. Silk from France and grapes from Spain. But the old man did not need these gifts to make himself happy. He gave many of them to the poor and the sick.
He was happy when he was doing something helpful. As long as he lived, he turned on his lamp each night and placed it at the window.
1. Why did the old man decide to keep a window lamp on for the sailors every night?2. How did the old man make enough money to pay for the cost of the lamp?
3. What could make the old man happy according to the passage?
4. Do you want to be a man like him? Why? (30 words or more.)

6 . One day I went for a walk on the hill with my parents. We walked down a small road after lunch. I saw a big blue beautiful butterfly. I followed it and wanted to catch it. Oops! I fell over!
The sky looked dark. “Was I asleep?” I thought. I looked around and saw a man wearing a big blue jacket. “Your mom and dad called Search and Rescue for help, because they couldn’t find you,” the man said, “and you looked hurt.” “Oh, yes, my ankle (脚踝) looked big and I couldn’t walk.”
“Don’t worry. The ambulance will arrive soon.” said the man.
“How did you find me?” I asked.
“We let Goldie smell (闻) your jacket. Goldie followed your smell and found you.” he said. Then I saw Goldie. The ambulance team found us soon. They took me to the ambulance. Goldie came with us.
We got to the hospital. I had an X-ray of my ankle. Luckily, it didn’t break, but I needed to stay in bed for days. Mom and Dad thanked everyone who helped me. And we thanked Goldie, too!

7 . A blind (盲人) boy sat on the street with a hat by his feet. He held up (举起) a sign which said: “I am blind, please help.” There were only a few coins (硬币) in the hat. A man walked by. He put a few coins into the hat. He then took the sign, turned it around, and wrote some words. He put the sign back so that everyone who walked by could see the new words. Soon the hat started to fill up (装满). That afternoon the man who had changed (改变) the sign came to see how things were. The boy recognized (认出) his footsteps (脚步) and asked: “Were you the one who changed my sign this morning? What did you write?” The man said: “I only wrote the truth (真相). I said what you said but in a different way.” His words were “Today is a beautiful day but I cannot see it.” Do you think the first sign and the second sign said the same thing? Of course, both signs told people the boy was blind. But the first sign only told people to put some money in the hat. The second sign told people that they could enjoy the day, but the boy could not enjoy it because he was blind. The first sign simply said the boy was blind. The second sign reminded (提醒) people they were lucky that they were not blind. There are at least (至少) two lessons we can learn from this simple story. The first is: Be creative. Think differently.
