文章大意:本文从四个方面论述了把社区公园变为高尔夫球场的弊端,想由此来阻止高尔夫球场的建设情况。

1 . How would you feel if someone decided to take away your park? Well that’s what’s happening in my community (社区). There’s a park in my community, but some people want to turn it into a golf course (高尔夫球场). Let me tell you why I think it’s a bad idea.

First, a park is meant to be for the whole community. Not everyone likes golf, so not everyone will get to use the park. This isn’t fair. A community park should have open spaces for everyone to use.

Second, to make way for the golf course, lots of playground equipment (设施) will have to be moved or knocked down (拆卸). This is a waste of time and money. It’s also a waste of perfectly good equipment. The swines (秋千), for example, will probably just end up as litter (废弃物).

Third, what about giving young people something to do? Not all kids are crazy about golf. At the moment, the park has a skating place and a playground. These attract (吸引) lots of kids from the community. If you turn the park into a golf course, these kids won’t have anywhere to go and they won’t have anything to do. This means they will stay at home and turn on a video game rather than (而不是) get some exercise. It also means that they might be out on the street causing trouble. Wouldn’t it be better to give them something to do at the park?

Finally, golf is expensive. Building a golf course and maintaining (维护) it costs a lot of money. Who is going to pay to maintain the golf course? What about those people who can’t afford (负担得起) to join a golf club? That means the golf course will only be available to people with lots of money.

Turning our park into a golf course is a bad idea. I suggest (建议) we have a community meeting before plans go any further.

Buffy: Hey, guys! I have a lot of things that I don’t need, so I’m thinking about having a yard sale. What do you think?
Debby: Having a yard sale is not easy. You have to collect things, put prices on them, put them out on tables and then wait for people to come. And usually you have to sell things at VERY low prices. For all that time and work, you make very little money. Why not just sell your things online for higher prices?
Jamie: Debby’s right. But I think it’d be even better to just give your things to people who need them. I just sent out a lot of things last week.
Albert: Hey, I love yard sales! It’s a great chance to make big money if you choose the right day. In my experience, Saturday is the best.
Matt: I agree with Albert. You can make money and meet interesting people. I made some good friends at my last yard sale.

文章大意:本文主要讲述狗献血的故事,告诉我们狗狗也能通过献血帮助其他同类。

6 . If man’s best friend is a dog, then who is a dog’s best friend? That would be Rover, Glow, Ivan or Raina. These four dogs donated (捐献) blood (血液) to other dogs. And they did it without having to travel far from home. They visited an animal bloodmobile (捐血车).

Similar to the Red Cross vehicles for men, the University of Pennsylvania's animal bloodmobile goes to where the donors are to make it easier to give. Kym Marryott is the manager of Penn’s Animal Blood Bank. “You don’t really think about it until you need it,” Marryott said. “Just like us, dogs need blood, too.”

However, not every dog can donate blood. Dogs must have the correct blood type, weigh at least 55 pounds and be younger than 8 years old. About 150 dogs take part in the program. Each donates three or four pints (品脱) a year, which can help animals in need. One pint can save at least three dogs. Just like people, the dogs can get a snack and a heart-shaped “U of P Blood Donor” sticker after giving. They also receive free dog food to take home.

Sandy Lucas brought her 7-year-old black dog, Raina, to the bloodmobile last week. “I was excited that she had the right blood which could help another dog out,” she said—“We’ll do it again.”

7 . Walking around Nanting village in Guangzhou, one can see bright flowers “blooming (绽放)” on street corners and walls. But they are actually made of felt (羊毛毡) and have been “planted” on the grass. The gardener is a college student Luo Shengtian.

“I’m sad about the broken corners when I’m riding my bicycle. They can hurt children, too.” So Luo decided to make felt flowers. Onsite, he sticks clay to the broken area, puts the flower in the clay and then adds green felt to make grass and help fix the flower in place.
