2 . At just 14 years old, Ryan Hickman from San Juan Hills High School, US , has made a beach clean-up campaign (运动). On April 20, he and many volunteers from Project 3R, the nonprofit (非营利机构) he created, started a five-week campaign to remove rubbish from five beaches along the Southern California coast and some in Mexico.
“The rubbish ends up in the ocean, and animals are eating it,” Hickman told The Orange County Register. “Picking up a piece of rubbish may save a whale’s life.”
Ryan first learned about the impacts of pollution at the Pacific Marine Mammal Center in Laguna Beach, which has been saving sea lions and seals for more than 40 years. Watching the animals improve encouraged him to think about what he could do to help.
From a young age, Ryan had developed a love for recycling and had always liked rubbish trucks. He put the two interests together and began raising money by collecting recyclables. In 2017, Ryan handed a $10,000 (about 72,000 yuan) check over to the PMMC after picking up 50,000 pounds of rubbish and more than 200,000 recyclable bottles.
Along with organizing volunteer cleanups, Ryan has also traveled worldwide, speaking to kids about caring for the planet and oceans. At the Ocean Institute in California, he started a program where primary school students clean local beaches and then board the institute’s teaching ship to learn about pollution’s impact.
“It’s fun,” he said. “The people I talk to ... it may influence them, and they might organize a cleanup, too.”

It all began in 1995, when Brian was still a firefighter. A car accident caused serious damage to his brain. After several months of treatment, Brian’s doctors said that he would never talk again and that he would have to spend the rest of his life in a nursing home.

Over the years, Brian has developed a special relationship with birds. The birds that bite other humans, seem to like him and can get along with him well. He is now called a bird whisperer (鸟语者). Brian pays for most of the costs of looking after the birds with his own money, but has recently established a foundation (基金会) to accept donations. I still remember my first fire. I was the second volunteer on the scene (现场). The captain was talking with the homeowner, who was surely having one of the worst days of her life. At midnight, she was standing outside in the heavy rain, under an umbrella, barefoot (赤脚的), while her house was in flames (在燃烧中). The other volunteer, who had arrived just before me, was asked to go inside and save the homeowner’s dog. The captain then waved (招手) me over. He said, “Bezos, I need you to go upstairs past the fire, and get this woman a pair of shoes.” So, not exactly what I was hoping for, but off I went up the stairs, down the hall, past the “real” firefighters, who were pretty much done putting out the fire at this point, into the bedroom to get a pair of shoes.
Now I know what you’re thinking, but I’m no hero. (Laughter) I carried the shoes downstairs where I met the other volunteer with the valuable dog. We took our treasures outside to the homeowner, where, not surprisingly, his received much more attention than mine.
A few weeks later, the company received a letter from the homeowner thanking us for saving her home. The act of kindness she noted above all others was that someone had even gotten her a pair of shoes.
Here, I would offer this reminder: don’t wait. Don’t wait until you make your first million to make a difference in somebody’s life. If you have something to give, give it now.
Not every day is going to offer us a chance to save somebody’s life, but every day offers us an opportunity to affect (影响) one. So get in the game. Save the shoes.
