Need a reason to be happy? Then you will be happy to know that March 20th is the International Day of Happiness.
The United Nations set up the International Day of Happiness in 2012 to remind us that happiness is a basic human goal and right.
It was celebrated for the first time in 2013. On that day, we celebrated hundreds of “Happy Heroes”-those who did so much to bring happiness to others. They helped the homeless to live a comfortable life and the poor kids to go to school.
The 2014 Day of Happiness actions asked people to share pictures of making them happy. People all over the world showed their favourite pictures on the Internet. “It’s exciting to see so many people sharing photos of what makes them happy, “Joe, a senior high school student from Canada said. The 2015 Day of Happiness actions gave attention on relationships. Modern society is leaving more and more people feeling lonely. On that day, thousands of people all around the world reached out to make new connections with others. They visited their neighbors, gave calls to the doctors they didn’t know very well, drove the strangers to station for free…
The theme of the 2019 Day of Happiness was “Happier Together”. It encouraged people worldwide to focus on what we had in common, rather than what divided us.

8 . Many people spend their vacation doing nothing on a beach, but Kisty Ross wanted to do something different. “I spent three weeks working in the hot sun, digging to find pieces of old cups and plates,” she says. “I worked really hard all day and I slept in a tent at night. My friends thought I was crazy, but I had an amazing time, it was my best vacation ever!”
Kisty was working for a volunteer programme in Tunisia in North Africa. Over twenty-five young volunteers worked together on archaeological sites (考古遗址) to find important information about the past. The volunteers had to be very careful, because it was important not to damage the things they found. Many of them worked at Tunisia’s Biggest archaeological site in Carthage, and some of them worked in other important sites in the country. Kisty explains why she chose this vocation. “I am always interested in history, and Tunisia has a lot of very important archaeological sites. There were people living in Carthage as early as 3, 000 years ago. I love being in places that are so old. It is exciting to find pots and other things that people used every day”
It was harder for Kisty than for some of the others. “I come from Alaska, which is a cold place.” she says. “It was hard for me to work under the hot North Africa sun. But it was a wonderful chance to meet people from other countries and to learn about the past. It changed my life. Now I’m hoping to study archaeology in college.”
