1 . “Hello everyone, my name is Zhang Jianna. I’m a city cleaner from Chaoyang Sanitation (环卫中心)…”
Recently, a video of Zhang became popular online. Many people were shocked at her fluent (流利的) English and wondered how she had such great English skills. Actually, behind this is a long journey of persistence (坚持).
Zhang comes from a village in Hebei Province. In 2012, she got the job as a sanitation worker in Chaoyang District, Beijing. One day, she met a foreigner. The foreigner spoke a lot of unfamiliar (陌生的) words to her. She didn’t know what to do because she couldn’t understand what the foreigner said. Soon, the foreigner found that Zhang didn’t understand his words. So, he pointed to the street and gave her a thumbs-up while saying, “Good, good!” Zhang suddenly realized that the foreigner was cheering her for keeping the street clean, but she couldn’t say anything to express herself.
This unusual experience touched Zhang, and she made up her mind to learn English. Then, Zhang found her children’s textbooks and started her learning journey. However, learning English at an older age was difficult. Zhang would easily forget the words she learned. But she didn’t flinch from facing up to the challenge. She used all her free time to learn and memorize the words over and over again. Finally, her hard work paid off. So far, she has learned around 3,000 English words and has been able to communicate fluently with foreigners. Zhang said, “Persistence is the key to learning English. Learn step by step and learn every day.”
Now, Zhang’s amazing journey leads to a new goal. She says she wants to introduce her hometown in English to draw more tourists one day.

This Teen Rocked the Asian Games
Huang Yuting is amazing. She is just 17 years old, but she has achieved what most adults can’t achieve in their lifetime. This September, she went to the Asian Games and bagged three gold medals for China!
Huang is a shooter from Zhejiang. At the 19th Asian Games, she competed in the 10 m air rifle (步枪) women’s individual (个人), team and mixed team events. Every time she was ready to shoot, she showed an amazingly strong focus. It felt like the outside world faded away (逐渐消逝) from her. She closed her eyes for seconds, pointed her rifle, and then pulled the trigger decisively. The teenage girl stood out and became the first “triple-champion” (三冠王) at the Games. She completely stole the show!
But do you know what made the girl even more special? She had a cute panda doll hanging on her rifle. From event to event, she had her special panda friend with her. It was so impressive! When asked about the panda doll, Huang explained it was a gift she received and believed it would bring her good luck. And it did! She had imagined herself winning three gold medals at the Games. It seemed an impossible dream, but the dream finally came true!
The young girl was overjoyed at her success, but she didn't let it go to her head. Now she dreams bigger. She wants to go to the Paris Olympics and win a gold medal. She knows it won’t be easy, but she has made up her mind to train hard and do her best. She wants to know what her limits are and make her country proud again!
Keep going keep learning and keep improving, Huang Yuting! With effort, the sky is the limit for.
1. Why is Huang Yuting amazing?3 . On our second day in China, we had already been asked to join the school for supper. Nervous and unsure of the food and table manners, we politely agreed. Coming to China, the thing I was most nervous about was the food, and now my first dining experience would be with the school staff.
In Chinese culture the most important person sits facing the door. When plates of food started arriving, I wished I had practiced my chopstick skills before arriving in China.
Chinese culture is all about being hospitable (好客的). This means ordering lots of food and encouraging you to keep eating. It also means drinking wine or tea. You’ll never have an empty glass.
It’s polite to try everything, but if you know me, you would know I don’t eat everything. Fresh fish? Sure, an entire fish on the plate staring at you while you pick at it. Not for me. Snails with their shell crushed and cooked into a meal? No thanks! The lung of a pig? I’ll pass. It seems that the Chinese really eat everything!
The Chinese people are friendly. They want to learn about you and teach you about their culture. They like to ask questions, and it is polite to ask them many questions and keep the conversation going.
Every day I’m pushed out of my comfort zone (舒适区). But for the most part, I discover something I really enjoy. The experience itself is quite amazing, I’ve learned a lot, yet there’s still so much to learn. It surely is different from my culture and way of living, but being in their shoes and seeing life through their eyes has really helped me to understand. And I look forward to discovering more!
