1 . Jim and Jack came from a small town. They were ceramic (陶瓷) artists and good at making pots (罐子).
They heard city people liked pots, so they decided to sell their pots to a big city. Through more than ten years of hard work, they made the best pots in the town. They hired a ship to take all the pots to the city.
Unluckily, the ship met a strong storm on the way. After the storm, the ship landed. All the pots were broken into pieces. The two men’s dream of becoming rich was broken along with the pots.
Jim suggested that they should stay in a hotel for the night and walk around the city to enjoy the sights the next day. Jack looked at Jim in pain and asked, “You still want to go around the city? Don’t you show any care to these pots? We worked so hard to make them!” “We are unlucky enough to lose the pots. We will be more unlucky if we lose happiness,” Jim said calmly.
Jack thought for a while and nodded. The next day, he followed Jim around the city and had a good time for a few days. During their stay in the city, they found by accident that people there decorated their walls with things that looked like what they used to make pots. Resting my head on Helen’s shoulder, I put my arms round her waist (腰). We sat together and rested quietly.
We had not sat long before another person came in.
There were no heavy clouds in the sky any more, and the moon became bright; and her light, coming in through a window near, shone full both on us and on the coming person, Miss Temple.
“I came to find you, Jane Eyre,” said she. “I want you in my room, and as Helen is with you, she may come too.”
We followed Miss Temple to her room. It had a good fire, and looked cheerful. Miss Temple told Helen to take a seat in a low arm-chair on one side of the fire place, and herself taking another, she called me to her side.
“Is it all over?” she asked, looking down at my face. “Do you cry your sadness away?”
“I am afraid I shall never do that.”
“Why?”
“Because someone wrongly accused me, and you and everybody else, will now think me a bad girl.”
“We shall think you what you prove (证明) yourself to be, my child. Keep acting as a good girl, and you will make us happy.”

You might not know the name Beverly Cleary, but perhaps you have read one of her books—Ramona the Pest, Dear Mr. Henshaw, among many other titles. Cleary is one of the world’s most popular children’s writers. By showing that stories about ordinary (普通的) kids could be interesting, too, she changed the world of children’s books.
As a child, Cleary had trouble learning to read. Even after she had learned to love reading, she still found many books boring. The girl felt like the people she was reading about had little to do with her or her life. She wanted to read funny books about children like herself.
When she grew up, Cleary became a librarian (图书管理员). One day, some boys asked her, “Where are the books about kids like us?” Cleary realized there weren’t many books about ordinary kids, so she began to write some. Her first book, Henry Huggins, tells the story of a boy and his dog. Huggins is just an ordinary third-grader, but the book soon became a hit.
Cleary went on to write more books about Huggins and the other children in his neighborhood. From this neighborhood, “Ramona the Pest” became Cleary’s best-known character. She is always getting into trouble. Whenever Ramona gets into trouble, it’s often funny, but it’s also something most kids can understand. Cleary knew what it really felt like to be a kid.
Unlike many other children’s writers, Cleary liked to focus on (聚焦) real-life problems. In several of her books, the parents have money problems or are unhappy with their jobs. Cleary dealt with these situations with a gentle sense of humor and a deep understanding.
Cleary wrote over 40 books in all. More than 91 million copies of her books have been sold. The great writer died at the age of 104 on March 25, 2021. Although she is no longer with us, her characters and stories will continue to be loved by many for years to come.

9 . When the doctor arrived later that morning, he was very surprised. Colin was sitting on the sofa looking at one of his books. He was talking to Mary.
“So, you were ill last night, Colin”, he said.
“I’m better now — much better,” Colin answered in his young Rajah voice. “I’m going out in my wheelchair soon if it is fine. I want some fresh air.”
The doctor left without saying anything else. That night Colin slept well. He dreamt about the garden again, and Dickon and its animals.
Early the next morning, Mary ran into his room, “Dickon is here with the fox cub and the crow and two squirrels and a new-born lamb!” she cried.
“Listen! Did you hear that caw-caw sound!”
Just then Martha opened the door. “Dickon and his animals are here, sir,” she said, Colin looked very excited.
Dickon came in. The new-born lamb was in his arms and the little red fox walked next to him. Soot sat on his left shoulder and a squirrel sat on the other. Another squirrel was looking out of his coat pocket. Colin stared as Dickon gave him the new-born lamb.
“What is it doing?” cried Colin. “What does it want?”
“It wants its mother,” said Dickon, smiling.
He took a baby’s bottle from his pocket. He pushed the bottle into the lamb’s mouth. The lamb drank the milk, then it fell asleep.
Colin and Mary asked Dickon questions about the names of flowers. He knew exactly which ones were already growing in the secret garden.
“I’m going to see them,” cried Colin. “I can’t believe it!”
The next day, Dickon pushed Colin’ wheelchair slowly and carefully. Mary walked next to it. They went across the lawn to the long path near the wall. Then Dickon stopped pushing the chair.
“And look!” Mary moved the ivy branch. “Here is the door. Dickon pushes him in—push him in quickly!” When they were inside the garden, Colin looked round and round. He saw the walls and the earth and the trees with their new green leaves. In the grass under the trees there were flowers - gold and purple and white. The trees were covered in pink and white flowers. The sun was warm on his face. Mary and Dickon stared at him. He looked different. His face was pink, not white. “Mary! Dickon! I’m going to get well!” he cried. “And I’m going to live forever and ever!”

From Sept 19 to 20, mermaid divers from around the world got together in Sanya for the 2023 China Mermaid Open Championship Atlantis Station and International Mermaid Contest.
Among them, Xiang Lei is a 29-year-old diver and performer in Sanya. Like everyone else, he found it hard to swim in a beautiful way when he first tried on the mermaid tail.

What’s more, swimming with the eyes and nose exposed (无防护的) was another problem. “Although it is not comfortable, you have to keep your face relaxed at the same time,” he said.
Mermaid diving is usually done without goggles (护目镜) and air canisters (气瓶). Divers need strong endurance (耐力). In this way, they can stay in water long enough. However, people can train themselves through running and swimming. Anyone in good health can learn to be a mermaid.
Xiang believes that mermaid diving shows unrestrained (无限制的) beauty. “Many people think it’s a girls’ activity.
