1 . Recently, my daughter reminded me of someone we saw at the train station a few years ago.
That day, my daughter and I were waiting for our train. We went to buy some drinks, and then we saw the old man. Dressed poorly, he was standing in front of the counter (柜台) while counting coins slowly to buy just one bottle of water. The businessman behind him said impatiently, “Hey! Can’t you be quick? Some of us have a train to catch!” Hearing this, the old man seemed to be very embarrassed, so he walked away quietly at once.
It was my turn. I bought our two drinks and the old man’s water as well. We walked up to him and gave him the water with a smile. After walking away, my daughter complained, “Dad, the old man is so impolite. He didn’t even say ‘thank you’ to us!” I told her that we did this not to get a “thank you” from other people. We just wanted to be nice.
Now, my daughter always reaches out to help people. She waves, makes eye contact (接触) and says “hi” to people on the street. She holds doors for people. She scoops up things that other people drop.
When I mentioned this recently, she seemed surprised. I asked her why she was so kind all the time. She said, “Because it is just right to be that way.” Then she added, “And because I see you do that all the time.”

They both contributed a lot to their country. Lian Po was good at fighting against enemies in the war while Lin Xiangru was strong in providing wise suggestions for the king.
One day, Lin Xiangru took a lot of trouble to get a valuable jade (璧) back for the king. Then the king highly praised him. Lian Po felt unhappy and said, “I’ll make Lin Xiangru feel ashamed and foolish the next time I meet him.” Lin Xiangru heard of this from others. Air is everywhere. Air is so important that we can’t live without it. Have you heard of the news that air is sold by villagers? It’s reported from China Youth Daily that villagers in some areas of Guangdong are capitalizing on (充分利用) their clear air by selling it to tourists who are enveloped in heavy smog.
At the weekends, people from big cities in the Pearl River Delta come to the northern area of Guangdong, including the 1,417-metre-high Gold Mountain, which is well known for its clean air.
Villagers in the mountain sell air stored in plastic bags at prices from 30 yuan for a big bag to 10 yuan for a small one.
Zhi Chenglin, a Gold Mountain local, was the first to come up with the idea after giving up his job in the provincial capital of Guangzhou. He said he chose to return to his hometown because he couldn’t bear the air and environment in Guangzhou.
Several women from Guangzhou said they bought bags of air as a way to make more people pay much attention to the environmental protection when they return home.
“We’ll analyse (分析) the air, make a comparison, and tell friends how bad the air in Guangzhou is becoming,” said one woman.
In the past few days, 21 cities and counties of Guangdong province have enveloped in smog.
Blue sky, white clouds, fresh air and clean water, we are looking forward to them.

Screen-Free Days
I remember the first time I suggested screen-free days in our school to some of our student leaders.
Jokingly, I said to the group, “What do you think if we go a week without using our laptops or smartphones?”
They laughed, and one of them said, “No way, Mr.White. That would be too much.” I could feel their worry, and told them that I was only considering single screen-free days. Even that idea left them feeling upset.
According to a survey we did, most students in our school spend about six hours a day on screens. Many of my students start their day by checking their smartphones. I often see them looking at their phones when getting off the bus or at parents’ drop-off; they can’t use their own “screens” at school. They usually work on computers at school for at least two hours during the day.
It’s clear that our students spend a lot of time on screens. We do see the benefits of technology. However, we teachers also want to make sure that students have balanced learning and social experiences away from their screens. That’s why we have come up with the idea of screen-free days.
During the course of the year, we have built in several screen-free days that require us to make different plans for our students about how they will communicate with one another and the world around them without “screens”. For some teachers, this means bringing back a valuable lesson plan that has been put off for some time because it is “out of date”. Others have designed something completely new.
Fun activities, for example, card games and room escape (密室逃脱) games, are organized at school. In these activities, students socialize without smartphones and have face-to-face communication without checking on “likes” they’ve got online. These fun activities also make it possible for the whole grade to enjoy the company of their friends with no smartphones.
After our first screen-free day, students mentioned that they were surprised they enjoyed it. Finding ways to help our students connect with one another is important. While technology is already part of our world, it shouldn’t play such an important role in a learner’s life.
1. How many hours do most students in the school spend on screens every day?2. Why have the teachers come up with the idea of screen-free days?
3. What fun activities can the students have at school?

6 . I have worked as a keeper at the zoo for 11 years. Spot and Stripe are the first tiger cubs (兽) that have ever been born here. As we all know, a third of Sumatran cubs in zoos can’t grow up successfully, so I decided to give them round-the-clock care at home.
I’ve got two children. The younger one, Kynan, was extremely happy about the tigers arriving. All of us really looked forward to being part of their lives and watching them grow. I wasn’t worried about bringing them into my home with my wife and kids. These cubs were so small that there was absolutely no risk. As they grew a little older, we let them move freely around the house during the day, but when we were asleep we had to keep them in a large room, or they would get up to mischief. We would come down the next morning to find they had turned the room upside down, and left it looking like a zoo. So, a lot of energy was needed to look after them. I felt extremely tired. I am thankful that my family was there to help. When Spot and Stripe were four months old, they were learning how to open doors and jump fences (围栏), and we knew it was time for them to go. It was hard for us to part with them. For the first few days, Kynan was always a bit disappointed that the cubs weren’t there. I’m not sad about it. I’m still with them every day at the zoo, and I do look back on the time that we had them happily.

7 . Recently, I’ve found many old photos of Mom, Dad, David, me and my first dog Coco. They meant a lot to me. I wondered how to keep them forever. Luckily, my son used a new app to clear up and improve some of the old photos. Looking at them brought back so many loving and happy memories. I even used one as my computer screen saver (屏保).
It is a picture of me sitting in my favorite chair, across from the wood stove (炉子) next to a bookcase full of old books. I am wearing my special Snoopy shirt and hugging Coco. There is a big smile on my face and a joyful shining light in my eyes. It was how I spent a lot of my winter afternoons as a girl, hugging Coco and reading an old book.
It is surprising how 60 years later that girl still lives inside of me. I still love comfortable chairs, warm stoves, Snoopy clothes, hugging dogs and reading books on cold winter days. But when I look in the mirror now, all I see is a thin face, grey hair, and lots of wrinkles (皱纹). The only thing that hasn’t completely changed is the eyes. They are hiding behind glasses now and full of wisdom (智慧) given by ages. But they still have that same joyful shining light.
Looking at the little girl smiling at me from the computer screen and that 66-year-old woman looking back at me in the mirror can be a little bit strange at times. They look so different. However, they are both me. We can’t stop getting older, but we can remain both joyful and young at heart forever.

8 . The first marathon (马拉松) of the modern Olympic Games took place in 1896. Now marathon is a popular sport across China. On April 26, more than 300,000 runners took part in 26 marathon events nationwide, reported China Daily.
Teenagers have also taken part in marathons actively. Xu Qian, a 15-year-old boy from Saqian, Jiangsu, loves running. He took first place in the 5-kilometer Happy Run of the Jingdong Suqian Marathon on April 2. For Xu, the race meant months of training and preparation. He ran about 30 to 40 kilometers each week ahead of the run. “The 800-meter run at school is more about speed while a marathon tests a runner’s endurance and psychological quality (心理素质)”, he said. When he felt tired during the race, he told himself to fight on.
As well as one’s fighting spirit, kindness from the people also plays a part in helping runners get to the finish line. Li Zhouzi from Shanxi took part in a 3-kilometer Kid Run of the Berlin Marathon in Germany in 2019 when she was 10. The support from the people cheering along the course (跑道) really encouraged her. “When things were hard, they cheered me on. The simple words ‘keep it up’ meant a lot to me and I was encouraged to keep going to the end,’ Li said.

What I want to change about myself most is my pessimistic attitude (悲观的态度) toward life. Sometimes, things are not that bad, but I take everything too seriously. Once, I thought I didn’t do well in an exam. I became very sad and didn’t have confidence in any other exams. But when I saw the result, it was not as bad as I thought. I worried about it too much. If only I could be optimistic (乐观的) about everything!
Student B
I want to change my bad temper (脾气) the most. I am not a very tender (温柔的) girl. I often get angry and hurt the people I love. Every time my mother cares about me, I complain that she talks too much. Sometimes, I even argue with her. But I know she loves me very much. I shouldn’t do that. I will try to change my temper.
Student C
The only thing I am not satisfied (满意的) with about myself is my teeth. My front teeth are so big that they almost look like buckteeth (龅牙). When I take photos, I avoid giving big smiles. I am also afraid that my classmates will laugh at me. If I had smaller teeth like other people, I would be very happy.
Student D
I often dream about having long legs. They would not only make me look more beautiful, but they could also help me run faster. I am an enthusiast (狂热者) for running and take an active part in running races at school. But other runners always pass me during the big race. I try my best, but it doesn’t work because of my short legs. So I want to have longer legs.

10 .
One afternoon, something on the Internet caught my eye: a tiny hedgehog held by a big hand. The post read: “HELP! My hedgehog abandoned her two babies, and I cannot raise both of them. Good home with experience needed!”
I had no experience with baby hedgehogs. I was an animal person and had raised cats, dogs, and birds. But this tiny animal was new to me, and it touched me that he was abandoned, and that maybe I could love him and be the best mom for him.
I wrote the most heartfelt email I could. That was how I found my Louie. True to my word, he was my baby. Louie didn’t know he was a hedgehog. He never curled (蜷缩) into a ball, and he liked my two cats, no fear. The cats, however, were afraid of him, as he often moved into the room, running after the cats and blocking my way.
By the time he reached old age, Louie had only three feet. However, he still managed to climb the stairs to visit other animals.
Life has its meaning! Louie needed a good home, and in return, he helped me realize my dream of taking photos of the hedgehog and made it possible for me to show off photos of him and be a good mom. Hedgehogs require lots of patience, trust, and knowledge—but the pay-off is pretty great.
