文章大意:本文是一篇说明文,主要介绍了雪林的重要性及雪林面临的危险。
2 . 根据短文内容,判断正误(正确“T”,错误“F”)。

Snow forests make up about 30% of the world’s total forest areas. Although these wonderful woodlands (林地) are not as famous as the Amazon or other rainforests, they are very important for the Earth’s health.

Snow forests are found in the far north of the world, in areas that are quite cold and usually have a lot of snowfall. They run for thousands of miles and cover about 17% of the Earth’s total land area. Winters in these woodlands can last up to six months but even so, snow forests are home to many kinds of animals.

Snow forests have an important job-helping to absorb (吸收) carbon-based (碳基) gases. However, snow forests are facing several dangers. Trees are being cut down faster and faster for their wood. Some forests are being cleared for new roads and houses. This leads to less and less living space for wildlife. What’s more, as the world gets warmer, the risk of fires in snow forests rises. In recent years, Canada and Russia have seen very dangerous fires.

It’s very time to take some measures to protect snow forests now.

1. Snow forests are as famous as Amazon rainforest.
2. Winters in snow forest areas can last for a long time.
3. Snow forests can help to absorb carbon-based gases.
4. In recent years, snow forests are facing the danger of drought (干旱).

3 . Showing respect for seniors

Dads have Father’s Day. Moms have Mother’s Day. Kids have Children’s Day. But, do our grandparents have a special holiday? Yes, they do!

The Double Ninth Festival is a special day for elderly people in China. The festival is on the ninth day of the ninth month of the lunar calendar. As the Chinese word for nine has the same sound as the word for long, people take the Double Ninth Festival to show their wishes of long life for elderly people.

There are many traditions for this festival. On that day, families get together and climb mountains for luck and in the hope that elderly people will live much longer. They also drink chrysanthemum wine (菊花酒) and wear a plant called zhuyu to celebrate it. Both chrysanthemum and zhuyu are regarded as clean plants that can clean houses and cure (治疗) diseases.

Respecting elderly people is shown not only on this special day but also in daily life. For example, when an older person enters a room, everyone stands up. When there are several guests at the table, the host usually introduces them from the oldest to the youngest. When a younger person is presenting something to an older person, two hands are used. Most people have map apps on their phones that can show their locations (位置) and guide them to where they want to go. But how do these app systems know your locations at any time or place? They find you by using satellite navigation (satnav) systems (卫星导航系统).

A satnav system uses groups of satellites to find the users’ locations. This location information is then sent to a receiver, such as a smartphone.

The first satnav system is the Global Positioning System (GPS) (全球定位系统), which belongs to the United States. The system is the world’s leading satnav system. But China’s satellites are important for improving the satnav system. BeiDou Navigation Satellite System (BDS), has overtaken (超过) GPS in size, Japan’s Nikkei Asian Review reported. China sent BeiDou’s first navigation satellite into space in 2000. China also built a satnav system after the United States and Russia, People’s Daily reported. 9 . Can plants talk? Modern research has found something amazing: they do communicate with each other.

It has been known for some time that plants use chemicals to communicate with each other. This happens when a plant gets attacked(受到攻击) by insects. The plant gives out chemicals from the leaves that are being eaten. This is like a warning, or a call for help: “I’m being attacked!” When another plant gets the chemicals, it starts to give out its own, different chemicals. Some of these chemicals drive insects away. Others attract the wasps(黄蜂)! The wasps kill the insects that are eating the plants. Scientists hope to learn more about this plant warning system, so that we can use it to grow more crops.

More surprisingly, plants also use sound to communicate. People can’t hear these sounds; but plants are making them. Some plants make noises with their roots. Corn and chili plants do this. Some trees make clicking noises when there is not enough water.

Most surprisingly of all, plants have an amazing system of communication that can link nearly every plant in a forest. Scientists call this system the “wood wide web”. The wood wide web is linked underground by fungi(真菌). It links the roots of different plants to each other. It is in some ways similar to the Internet we use. Using the wood wide web, plants can share information and even food with each other.

Scientists are learning more every day about the secret ways in which plants talk to each other. Maybe one day we will know enough about plant communication to be able to “talk” with them.

B.By connecting the roots of different plants to each other.
C.By sharing food and information with each other.
