It is also a study that tries to make computers “smart”. John McCarthy, a scientist, came up with the name “artificial intelligence” over 60 years ago. Many things such as learning and problem solving can be done by computers, though not in the same way as people do.

An unusual goal of AI research is to create computer programs. They can learn, solve problems, and think logically (逻辑地). Now AI can successfully understand human speech, recognize (识别) human faces, operate (操作) self-driving cars and compete in some game systems like playing chess. However, some people also think AI a danger to humans if it develops too quickly. A famous British scientist was also not for this kind of technology.

文章大意:本文是一篇说明文。文章主要介绍3D打印技术应用于建设房屋。

5 . 3D printing (3D打印) is becoming more and more popular all over the world. We can print many kinds of things such as clothing, toys and so on. But can you imagine printing a house? Now three companies are working together to use a 3D printer to create the first two-story 3D-printed house in the US.

Although 3D-printing has been around for a while, it hasn’t been used much for building houses. Now, that’s changing. Several 3D-printed houses have been built in the US, and more are planned. So far, no one in the US has 3D-printed a two-story house. This 3D-printed two-story house will be a large, 3-bedroom house.

Leslie Lok, who designed the house, says there are special challenges in printing a two-story house with concrete (混凝土). One of the biggest is the size of the machine needed for the building. The 3D printer in Houston (休斯的3D打印机) is massive. It weighs over 12 tons. Ms Lok says printing the house will take the huge machine about 330 hours. That’s about eight normal work weeks.

But the team isn’t in a rush. Though it’s a two-year project, the actual printing didn’t start until last July. The house is now about halfway finished.

They’re using the house as a “big laboratory” to learn more about 3D-printing houses. They want to see how the concrete reacts (反应) “under different weather conditions”. They also want to figure out (弄清楚) how to make 3D-printing faster and cheaper. Now, 3D-printing a house with concrete costs more than building a house with wood. That’s partly because the technology is new. The costs of 3D-printing houses will go down before long.

Ms Lok says that with 3D-printing, it’s easy to make each house different from other houses. That means that in the future, each house could be created specially for its owners.

But if you want to move into a 3D-printed house, you’ll have to wait. This one has already been sold.

6 . 根据短文内容完成表格,每空一词。

Have you ever done something that you didn’t really want to do, just because you want to fit in with others. When we do this, we’re not being true to ourselves. It’s important to be honest about your feelings because it can make you happier.

Being true to yourself means listening to your own thoughts (想法) and feelings. If you want to be alone sometimes, then being true to yourself might mean saying no to your friends who want you to play together. Being true to yourself is when your actions match your real thoughts.

When we keep doing things we don’t like and ignore (忽略) our thoughts and feelings, it can make us feel uncomfortable, worried or sad. Naomi Richards told THE WEEK Junior, “Children need to know clearly who they are, their values and their beliefs. Then they are more likely to be true to themselves.”

One part of being true to yourself is by learning how to say no in a polite way and following your beliefs. What’s more, you can learn how to be true to yourself by being yourself-sticking to your views, thoughts and actions.

文章大意:本文是一篇说明文,主要是介绍了海洋里鱼类发出的不同声音以及这些声音的含义。

7 . We usually think fish can’t talk. But there are a lot of sounds under the ocean. In fact, scientists believe that all sea animals—at least 250,000 kinds—can “speak”! “If we stay focused when diving (潜水), we can hear animals all around us,” a UK scientist Steve Simpson said.

In the past years, scientists used sound recorders to hear fish’s “voices”. There are now thousands of recorders in the ocean. They help scientists match sounds with sea life.

A healthy coral reef (珊瑚礁) is one of the noisiest places in the ocean. Scientists can tell if it’s healthy by listening to it. A healthy coral reef should be full of clicks (咔嚓声) made by shrimps (小虾). When some coral reefs dicd in 2015 and 2016, they became quiet. After people set up the protected areas, scientists heard the animals come back.

With the help of listening to the ocean, scientists start to understand sea animals’ languages.

Strong clown fish make short “chirp (啁啾声)” sounds when going after small clown fish. They do this to show they are more powerful. A damsel fish can create a pop sound to scare other fish by quickly opening and closing its mouth. Mother dolphins can use a special voice to talk to their babies. 文章大意:本文主要介绍了丝绸是怎样制成的。

8 . Comfortable to wear in both hot and cold weather, silk is as popular today as it was first made.

The method to produce silk has changed very little since it first began 5,000 years ago. It starts with small silkworms (蚕) that eat a special kind of leaves. When they are fully grown, the silkworms create a cocoon—a protective coat made of silk. For production, workers first pick these cocoons and divide them according to their quality. They are then gently boiled in hot water in order to be softened and ready for use. At the same time, the worms inside are dead. The silk is later turned into thread (丝线). Silk thread is then coloured and finally made into cloth on the machine.

Although growing and wearing silk is very popular worldwide today, it was only produced in China at first. Actually, it was so valuable that at one time only the Chinese emperor and his family were allowed to wear it. The Chinese kept the method of silk making a secret and made strict laws against taking silkworms out of China. To smuggle them would be put to death. However, a princess in the fifth century and two monks in the sixth century managed to take some silkworm eggs out of China. And this started other countries’ silk making industry.

Before this, Europeans depended on businessmen bringing silk from East Asia. They travelled across Central Asia and the Middle East. In fact, so much silk was brought to Europe on this route that it became famous as the Silk Road. By the time of the Han Dynasty, silk had become popular in Europe.

Today, China produces around 80% of the silk worldwide. Although man-made materials are cheaper and easier to make, the silk is still hard to be replaced, and there is always a large market home and abroad.

3. What does the underlined word “smuggle” in paragraph 3 mean?
A.Keep something a secret.B.Take out of the country secretly.
