1 . Everyone knows that Edison failed 10,000 times before he invented the light bulb (灯泡). It’s important to have new ideas and keep trying. Teenagers are known for being creative and full of new ideas. Let’s have a look at these teenage inventions that might change the world.

Banana leaves usually go bad in two or three days. Tenith Adithyaa, a teenager from India, used UV to make the leaves stay fresh for a year. Tenith thinks that one day the leaves will be used for making plates, cups and other things.

David Cohen, an American teenager, built an earthworm (蚯蚓) robot. It is able to go into the smallest places, where humans or dogs can’t go. It will be used for finding people in a fire or an earthquake.

Remya Jose, a 14-year-old from India, found it tiring and boring to hand-wash clothes in the nearby river. She reused some bicycle parts and created a washing machine that saves time, energy and keeps people fit at the same time.

Kenneth Shinozuka, a 15-year-old from New York, noticed that his grandfather who got Alzheimer’s disease (阿尔茨海默症) would often leave home and get lost. So he invented the wearable sensors (感应器) to help people find their family members like his grandfather.

文章大意:本文是一篇说明文,介绍了睡眠对人的记忆力和学习能力的重要性,同时还有午睡对人的好处。

2 . About one-third of a person’s life is spent in sleep. Studies have shown that a good night’s rest helps us stay healthy. Researchers say sleep is probably the best tool we have for memory and learning.

“Getting a good night’s sleep is important for the learning and memory. It’s important because it stores the training and learning exercises into our memory forever while we’re sleeping 7-8 hours in bed. And then the next morning when we wake up, our mind is better prepared to act on that information,” Twery, an expert on the science of sleep said.

But what about getting rest during the middle of the day? Past studies have shown that napping (打盹) can help babies and young children learn better. In fact, napping can help older adults with their brain to remember things better.

The researchers studied 3,000 people and found that those who took an hour-long nap did much better on mental (智力的) tests. The hour-long nappers also did better on the tests than those who napped for shorter and longer periods. But researchers note that these findings are for those over 65, but for the young and healthy adults, an hour-long nap may be too long.

“At present, we’re suggesting that we try to nap for about 30 minutes or less. Thirty minutes is enough to remove (消除) the pressure and will help us feel more awake. If we nap longer, we will get trapped into the deep sleep, which can be hard to get out of,” Twery said. This feeling is called sleep inertia (迟钝)—the period when you are awake from a very deep sleep. For a time, you are unable to think clearly.

文章大意:本文针对在一个新的地方很难入睡这个问题,研究人员给出的解释。但是仍有很多问题需要解决。

8 . Have you ever had trouble sleeping in a new place?

Lots of people do. And now researchers (研究员) from Brown University in Rhode Island think they know why. They found that one-half of the brain “remains more awake” than the other half when people are trying to sleep in a new place.

The sleep findings were reported in Current Biology by Brown University. In their report, the researchers said many people report they have a harder time sleeping the first night at a hotel or other places outside their home. They call it “first-night influence”. “In Japan they say, ‘If you change your bed, you can’t sleep,’”said Yuka Sasaki, one of the report’s writers. “You don’t sleep very well in a new place. We all know about it.” The researchers measured (测量) brain waves for 35 volunteers for two nights in a lab. The two nights were a week apart (间隔). They found the left half of the brain was more active than the right half during the first night. This was during the first deep-sleep period, the researchers said.

Sasaki said a lot of questions remained. Researchers did not keep measuring brain waves all night long. So, they don’t know if the left half keeps “watch” all night, or whether it “works in shifts with the right half later in the night”. They also do not know why the brain activity, at least during the first period of deep sleep, is always on the left half.

1. How many times did the researchers measure brain waves for 35 volunteers?
A.Once.B.Twice.C.Three times.D.Four times.
2. The researchers found ________ during the first deep sleep period.

A.Takes turns.B.Pours out.C.Breaks down.D.Figures out.
4. What is the text mainly about?
A.What we will have to do to sleep well.
B.Who doesn’t sleep well in a new place.

文章大意:本文主要讲述了快乐的重要性以及保持快乐的方法。

9 . Happiness makes us feel good about ourselves and let everything around us look very positive (积极的). However, such feelings do not stay with us all the time. There are two important sides to be happy. One is to keep ourselves happy, and the other is to get over sadness in life.

Many people believe that money can make them happy. This is not true, because you can find many rich people who are not happy. It is true that simple things in life can make us happy. Too often, we spend too much time thinking about the future, for example, getting into college or getting a good job, so that we don’t enjoy the present. You should enjoy life’s simple pleasure, such as reading a good book, listening to your favorite music, or taking a walk in the park.

Share your life with close friends or family members. If we just focus on ourselves in life, it’s hard for us to stay happy. When we share our life with the people who are dear to us, then we grow as a human being. The support we get from friends or family members helps us stay in a health y mood.

Smile more often in life. Laughter has a magical effect on our mood. A smile can bring happiness, not only for us, but also for the people around us. A short cut to happiness in life is to smile and remain cheerful.

Being helpful makes us happy. When we help those who are not as lucky as us, we are thankful for what we have. We will see the positive side of our own life. It is believed that when we put joy into other people’s lives, the same joy will return to our life, as well.

Get over sadness. There is nothing wrong with being sad, if we know the right way to get over it. We should create a positive and calm environment around ourselves . For example, if there are people who are bothering us in our mind, we should stay away from them.

1. To be happy, ________.

文章大意:本文讲述了2022年12月15日晚上,浙江省的天空被一颗火球点亮,这个物体直径超过10厘米, 可能在下落过程中并没有完全燃烧殆尽。

10 . A fireball lit up the sky on the evening of December 15th, 2022 in Zhejiang. Instead of making wishes on this outer space object, some people were frightened, as the fireball was described as moving at a very fast speed and very bright.

The fireball was much brighter than the full moon. It was like a meteor (流星). The object was over 10 centimeters wide, and it may not burn out completely during its fall. It was time of Geminid meteor shower activity recently, so the object might come from it.

The remains of the fireball were later found in the countryside. Expert Zheng Yongchun examined the remains and said that the meteorite (陨石) has great value in studying Earth’s early history.

Scientists said that about 48. 5 tons of materials fall on Earth each day. Almost all the materials are vaporized (蒸发) in Earth’s atmosphere, leaving a bright trail called “shooting stars”. Several meteors per hour can usually be seen on any night, which are often called meteor showers.

How does a meteor land on Earth? Meteoroids (流星体), often seen as space rocks, enter Earth’s atmosphere at high speed and burn up, then meteors occur. Only 5 percent of meteorites can make it to Earth’s surface, and these can range from the size of a pebble (鹅卵石) to a fist (拳头). Even knowing the science behind this alien event, you may still worry about the chances of being hit by a meteorite. According to UK media Mirror, the chance is very small—about one in 840, 000, 000. There is only one record of a person being hit by a meteorite , which took place in 1954 in the US. The meteor crashed through the window and landed on the “lucky” lady Ann Hodges.

1. Why didn’t people make wishes when the fireball appeared? ________
A.Because it wasn’t like a meteorite.
B.Because it was too big.
C.Because it moved too fast and was too bright.
D.Because people didn’t like its shape.
2. What does the underlined word “occur” probably mean? ________
A.Knock.B.Disappear.C.Die.D.Appear.
3. Which of the following is NOT true about the fireball? ________
A.It was about 2 meters long.
B.It was over 10 centimeters wide.
C.It might come from Geminid meteor shower activity.
D.It was much brighter than the full moon.
4. What is the main idea of the last paragraph? ________
A.How the meteor comes into being.
B.The chances of being hit by a meteorite.
C.The speed of the meteor.
D.The events about aliens.
5. What can’t we know from the text? ________
A.Where does the fireball come from?
B.How does a meteorite form?
C.Why does the meteor have a trail?
D.What can we see on the moon?
