文章大意:本文主要介绍了闲聊的意义以及如何开始闲聊。

2 . In many cultures, small talk is a big deal. Although it may seem like a pointless conversation to pass the time, it is actually very important for communicating with others.

“The small talk is about digging into possibilities (可能性),” said Melissa Wadsworth, a US speaker. Having good small talk skills can help you meet new people, make friends or even find a job. Not only that, small talk can also improve one’s ability to think by making you consider what another person feels or thinks.

The small talk is so important, how do you do it? What’s the best way to break the ice and start talking to people? Well, some of the most common topics include the weather, hobbies, work, family and travel. These topics are great for small talk because they are easy for people to talk about.

Another way to start small talk is to talk about things around you. For example, you can talk to your schoolmates about your teachers. If you’re at a party, you might say something about the food, music, or the number of people there. If you’re lucky, you might have a friend who will introduce you to others first to help you start a conversation.

Sometimes, it may seem a bit difficult to start a conversation with someone you don’t know. That’s OK! Everyone has this problem sometimes. Wadsworth has the best advice for this, “Approach the ‘stranger’ about a good laugh, an interesting story or a job chance.”

Small talk might just be the first step to something more important.

文章大意:本文是一篇说明文。文章主要向我们介绍了“首夜效应”,即人们在其他地方睡觉时第一夜很难睡着的原因。

5 . Many of us have this experience: we lie down in a bed, not our own, maybe at a friend’s house or in a hotel room, and find it difficult or impossible to fall asleep. Is it because the bed is uncomfortable? Maybe, but perhaps there can be other reasons.

According to a new study in Current Biology, an important reason is what the scientists call “first night effect (效应)”. They believe that it is because one side of the brains is more active. It forces us to stay awake on the first night in a new environment. The effect acts as a “night watch” to protect us from potential (潜在的) danger.

For the study, 35 young volunteers were asked to sleep in a sleep lab for several days. At the same time, researchers watched their brain activities.

According to the researchers, at their first night, the left brains were more active than the right brains and people had a hard time sleeping. However , left-brain activity reduced (减少) as days went by, falling even to the point of complete peace. In this process, the volunteers got an increasingly better sleep experience.

“At some level, the brain is continuing to analyze things, even though you can’t realize it.” US professor Jerome Siegel told Smith Sonian Magazine , “If something unusual happens — if a door opens or you hear a key in a lock — you can be alert(警觉的).” It works to protect us in a dangerous environment. More surprisingly, this is similar to the way some animals sleep. Whales, dolphins, and many birds can sleep with half of their brain while the other half stays awake, with its one eye staying open.

If you have ever had what you think is “first night effect”, researchers suggest that you bring your own pillow (枕头) or sleep in a room similar to your bedroom next time you sleep away from home.

1. Why do we have “first night effect”?
A.Because the left brains begin to relax.
B.Because the right brains have a hard time.
C.Because one side of the brains is more active.
D.Because two sides of the brains need more rest.
2. The study finds that “first night effect ” _____________ .
A.helps animals sleep betterB.protects people from danger
C.causes something unusualD.influences less in the daytime
3. What can we find out about the volunteers?
A.Their left brains were more active on the first night.
B.Their right brains kept them awake the whole night.
C.They slept much better in the sleep lab than at home.
D.Their right brains became more active as days went by.
4. Why do researchers suggest bringing your own pillow when you sleep away from home?
A.To reduce your left brain activity with the familiar things.
B.To create a safe environment for yourself to fall asleep at once.
C.To tell your brain that you are safe and stop your left brain activity.
D.To show that your pillow is much more comfortable than other ones.
5. In which part of the newspaper can you find the text?
