2 . In many cultures, small talk is a big deal. Although it may seem like a pointless conversation to pass the time, it is actually very important for communicating with others.
“The small talk is about digging into possibilities (可能性),” said Melissa Wadsworth, a US speaker. Having good small talk skills can help you meet new people, make friends or even find a job. Not only that, small talk can also improve one’s ability to think by making you consider what another person feels or thinks.
The small talk is so important, how do you do it? What’s the best way to break the ice and start talking to people? Well, some of the most common topics include the weather, hobbies, work, family and travel. These topics are great for small talk because they are easy for people to talk about.
Another way to start small talk is to talk about things around you. For example, you can talk to your schoolmates about your teachers. If you’re at a party, you might say something about the food, music, or the number of people there. If you’re lucky, you might have a friend who will introduce you to others first to help you start a conversation.
Sometimes, it may seem a bit difficult to start a conversation with someone you don’t know. That’s OK! Everyone has this problem sometimes. Wadsworth has the best advice for this, “Approach the ‘stranger’ about a good laugh, an interesting story or a job chance.”
Small talk might just be the first step to something more important.

The flying house
There are wings (翅膀) on both sides of the house, and there are many different kinds of wings that you can choose from. Wherever you want to go, the flying house can take you there in a short time. When the house is in the sky, the house will form (形成) a cover right away so that the temperature won’t be too high inside.
The garden house
This design (设计) is about the future of food. There will be houses with special walls. On the outside wall are the gardens of the houses. People can plant tomatoes, carrots and onions on them. So every day, you just need to walk outside and collect your meals.
The lizard (蜥蜴) house
Like a lizard, changing color with the weather is the most important design of a lizard house. When it’s in the bright sun, the cover of the house will turn white to protect it from strong heat. During winter days, it turns dark and takes in as much light and heat as possible to produce energy (产生能量).
The tree house
Many scientists in the world would like to build a “tree house”. Like a leaf, the house collects sunlight during the day. The energy can be used to heat water, produce electricity (电) and even make the air fresher for the house. The “root” (根) of the house is deep down the ground.

What can you do when someone hurts you? Most people may be angry or even fight with him. But it’s not a good idea. You’d better forget all this and forgive him.

Second, don’t wait others to say sorry to you.
Next, try to see things in others’ shoes. You can understand their minds better and make yourself a little happier.

5 . Many of us have this experience: we lie down in a bed, not our own, maybe at a friend’s house or in a hotel room, and find it difficult or impossible to fall asleep. Is it because the bed is uncomfortable? Maybe, but perhaps there can be other reasons.
According to a new study in Current Biology, an important reason is what the scientists call “first night effect (效应)”. They believe that it is because one side of the brains is more active. It forces us to stay awake on the first night in a new environment. The effect acts as a “night watch” to protect us from potential (潜在的) danger.
For the study, 35 young volunteers were asked to sleep in a sleep lab for several days. At the same time, researchers watched their brain activities.
According to the researchers, at their first night, the left brains were more active than the right brains and people had a hard time sleeping. However , left-brain activity reduced (减少) as days went by, falling even to the point of complete peace. In this process, the volunteers got an increasingly better sleep experience.
“At some level, the brain is continuing to analyze things, even though you can’t realize it.” US professor Jerome Siegel told Smith Sonian Magazine , “If something unusual happens — if a door opens or you hear a key in a lock — you can be alert(警觉的).” It works to protect us in a dangerous environment. More surprisingly, this is similar to the way some animals sleep. Whales, dolphins, and many birds can sleep with half of their brain while the other half stays awake, with its one eye staying open.
If you have ever had what you think is “first night effect”, researchers suggest that you bring your own pillow (枕头) or sleep in a room similar to your bedroom next time you sleep away from home.

Why do some classes have pets? This is because (因为) students can learn about the pets and learn to love them. In some classes, students have hamsters. They look after (照顾) the hamsters. Every week the hamsters have new “mum and dad”. The “mum and dad” feed them every day. Sometimes the pets have babies. The students are very excited about it. But it needs more (更多的) students to look after the pets. You may want to know where the pets are during school holidays. A student will take the pets to his or her home for the holidays.

What would happen if you tied the egg to the skateboard? When the skateboard hits a stone, the egg won’t go flying. It will stay safely on the skateboard.
Air bags are also very important for car safety. Sometimes a seat belt isn’t enough. If the car is going really fast and runs into something, seat belts could even hurt people who wear them. Most cars have air bags in front of and next to the seats. When a car hits something, its air bags will come out quickly in less than one second to keep the people inside safe.

10 . According to a new survey, student safety has become a big problem. Nearly 50% of students say they are worried about robbery (抢劫) on the way to and from school. Now in many big cities in China, some schools have taught an unusual lesson: self-protection. Students like this lesson because there are no exams or boring classes. And they can learn how to save lives and know how to stop danger before it really happens.
Chen Haoyu, a teacher at Beijing No.25 Middle School, gives young students advice on how to deal with danger.
If you are robbed
Keep calm. If you cannot cry for help or run away, give the robber your money. Try to remember what the robber looks like and tell the police later.
If you are in a traffic accident
If a car hurts you, you should remember the car number. If it is a bicycle, try to call your parents before you let the rider go. This is because you don’t know how seriously you are hurt.
If it is raining hard and there is lightning (闪电)
Don’t stay in high places and stay away from trees.
