1 . How do you greet people in your country? In the UK, a handshake has been the traditional way to say hello. But this seems to be changing.

A new survey shows that the handshake is now less popular. According to the results, many British people now consider handshaking “formal, outdated” or “unhygienic (不卫生的)”. In the past, the British looked down on hugging or kissing as a form of greeting, but not any longer. In fact, almost 50 percent are using other ways to greet, with 16 percent preferring a European kiss on the cheek, and nearly one third choosing a hug.

The study of 1,003 people also found that one in five now feels that shaking hands is too formal, while 42 percent also said they would never shake hands when greeting friends, and one in twelve said they preferred not to shake hands in case germs are passed on. However, 87 percent still believe a handshake is more suitable in business.

Psychologist Dr. Jane McCartney said, “I think the handshake depends on age. The older you are, the more likely you will prefer the handshake. It’s quite a formal introduction. So, it’s quite nice that today’s generation feels much less reserved (寡言少语的).”

So, what’s your favourite form of greeting?

A.About 1,003.B.About 421.C.About 83.D.About 42.

2 . Different countries have different customs and cultures. Every culture around the world has different customs and ways of communicating. When you learn a language, you learn more than words.

In China, people are used to saying “sorry” to show that they regret doing something wrong. But it’s very proud for American people to have polite manners towards one another in public. They often use the word “sorry”—even when they don’t really mean it! Usually, if they want to ask a stranger for the time, they will start by saying “Sorry to trouble you.” If they’re five minutes late for the appointment, they will greet the person by saying “Sorry, I’m late!” It’s quite different in China. They use the word “sorry” in so many different situations that the meaning of the word has changed a little over time. The two main dictionary definitions (定义) of “sorry” are: 1) feeling sad for someone else because of their problems or bad luck; 2) feeling regret because you’ve done something wrong.

So what does “sorry” really mean? And why do western people use it so much? Well, in western culture, saying “sorry” is a way to be polite. It’s also a very clever way to get what they want. If you want to borrow something from others, you’d better say “sorry” to them about something. Or it’s hard for you to get what you want. So maybe saying “sorry” is not only just being polite, but also a good method to get what you want!

1. How many examples of the use of “sorry” are given by Americans in the second paragraph?
A.Two.B.Three.C.Four.D.Five.
2. When do people in America say “sorry” according to the passage?
A.When they regret doing something wrong.
B.When they ask strangers for help.
C.When they greet people for the first time.
D.When they arrive at a place early.
3. What does the underlined word “appointment” in the passage mean?
A.Idea.B.Class.C.DateD.Safety.
4. In which country do people say “sorry” to get what they want?
A.Japan.B.China.C.Korea.D.Germany.
5. What’s the best title of the passage?
A.How to Say “Sorry” Correctly.B.The Different Meanings of “Sorry”.
C.Why Western People Say “Sorry”D.Why Chinese People Say “Sorry”

7 . The Koala

Appearance:

The koala sleeps for up to 16-18 hours. It prefers to move around in the evening.

8 . Have you ever been out on a sunny day without an umbrella when suddenly it starts to rain? Who changes the weather? Certainly not the weatherman or the weather report of your town. It is the sun!

When the sun rises, it is day. When the sun sets, it is night. And days are warmer than nights. This is because the sunshine falls on the earth during the day. The sunshine makes the land, the water and the air warm. At night, when the sunshine is not there, it is cooler. In the morning and in the evening the sunshine is slanting (倾斜的). So it is not very hot. At noon the sunshine falls straight on the earth, and it is very hot.

We know that the earth goes around the sun. When one half of the earth is close to the sun, the other half is away from it. The part of the earth closer to the sun has summer. Here the days are warmer and longer. And the part of the earth away from the sun has winter. There the days are cooler and shorter. For example, when it’s winter in China, it is summer in Australia. So you see, the temperature and the length of the days are decided by the sun.

1. Why are days warmer than nights?
A.Because the sunshine falls on the earth during the day.
B.Because the moon makes the nights cool.
C.Because people move around during the day.
D.Because nights are longer and days are shorter.
2. What does the underlined word “length” mean in Chinese?
A.长度B.大小C.厚度D.宽度
3. Which of the following is NOT true?
A.Nights are colder than days.
B.The sunshine doesn’t fall straight on us in the morning.
C.When the part of the earth is away from the sun, it is warmer.
D.The sun plays an important part in the weather.
