The world has many beautiful sounds. We can hear the songs of birds and the laughter of people. We can listen to cool music and news reports. And it’s all because of our ears! They bring us a world of sounds.

But some people can’t hear any sound at all. Some are born ①deaf. Others can hear well in their childhood, but too many loud sounds hurt their ears later on.

Many people in China can’t hear ordinary (普通的) sounds clearly. A large number of them are children. Most of them are born with good hearing. But 6 children out of every 1,000 have hearing problems when they are born. And if a child has hearing problems, usually he or she will also have learning problems at school.

A lot of things can cause hearing problems. For example, too much earwax (耳垢) is not good for our hearing. And noise louder than 85 decibels (分贝) can hurt our ears and make us lose our hearing for a short time or even forever.

Hearing is important for all of us. ②So we should do our best to give our ears special care. Don’t forget to do the following:

● Try to stay away from places with too much noise. If you have to go, wear earplugs (耳塞). A pair of good earplugs can cut the noise by 30 decibels.

● When swimming, remember to put earplugs into your ears to stop water from getting in.

6 . There are so many expressions in American English that sound pleasant but are not. “Face the music” is a good example. When someone says he has to “face the music”, it does not mean he is going to a concert. “Face the music” means accepting and dealing with the punishment of an action.

Americans often use the word “face” in this way. For example, “I can't face another night of camping! It's cold and rainy. ” or “In life, you must face your fears. ” “Face” used in this way is very common.

But now, let's go back to facing the music. Imagine a friend asks you to take care of her beautiful red sports car. She gives you the keys and says, “Thanks so much for watching my car while I'm away. But please, do not drive it. It is an extremely(极其)fast car. ” But you do not listen. You want to show off to some friends. So, you drive it around town one night. As bad luck would have it, you lose control of the car and drive it into a stop sign. Bang!

When your friend returns, you must tell her what you have done and “face the music”. The “music” here is the result of your actions. It could be losing her friendship or paying for repairs to her sports car or both. Whatever the music is, you must face it.

There are other American expressions that mean the same thing as “face the music”. To “take your medicine” means accepting the results from something bad you have done. And if someone says, “You made your bed. Now lie in it. ” He means you created a bad situation and now you will experience the results!

7 . Carpooling (拼车) for School

In the UK, students often carpool. When your school doesn't have a school bus and your home is not near, you can carpool. Usually three or four students go to school in the same car. Their parents take turns (轮流) in taking the students in their cars.

The students have to be on time, because nobody wants to be late for class. If you are in the car and wait (等) for a friend for a long time, you will be unhappy. Your friends will feel the same way when you let them wait. Students learn a great lesson—to be on time.

8 . I and many other people in Britain love charity (慈善) shops because we can find them on every street. The charity shops sell all kinds of things and they are very cheap.

The first charity shop was opened by Oxfam in 1947. Now there are over 7,000 charity shops in the UK. My favorite charity shop in my hometown is the Red Cross Shop. There I always find children's books, all 10 to 20 pence each. They are really cheap.

Most of the shop workers in charity shops are volunteers, but each shop has a manager and he can get some money. Every morning you see bags of things outside the shops. Some people bring and put them there without waiting for thanks. In fact, over 90% of the things in charity shops are from kind people.

All the money the shops get goes to charity work. Charity shops raise more than 110 million pounds every year. The money is for sick and poor children, homeless and disabled people, and many others. In a charity shop you can get cheap but nice things. You might even feel special while shopping.

If possible, let's do something for charity together.
