1 . The view you hold for yourself greatly affects the way you lead your life. It can decide whether you become the person you want to be and whether you achieve the things you value. How does this happen? How can a simple belief have the power to change your psychology (心理) and, as a result, your life?
Believing that your qualities are carved (刻) in stone—the fixed mindset—creates a great need to prove yourself over and over. Some of us are trained in this mindset from an early age. Even as a child, I was focused on being smart, but the fixed mindset was really stamped in by Mrs.Wilson, my sixth-grade teacher. She believed that people’s IQ scores told the whole story of who they were. We were seated around the room in IQ order, and only the highest-IQ students could be trusted to collect homework, or take a note to the principal. She was creating a mindset in which everyone in the class had one important goal—look smart, don’t look stupid.
I’ve seen so many people with this one important goal of proving themselves in the classroom, in their careers, and in their relationships. Every situation calls for a confirmation of their IQ, personality, or character. Every situation is evaluated (评价): Will I succeed or fail? Will I look smart or stupid? Will I feel like a winner or a loser?
But doesn’t our society value 10, personality, and character? Isn’t it normal to want these qualities? Yes, but...
There’s another mindset, the growth mindset, which is based on the belief that your basic qualities are things you can develop through your efforts. Although people may differ in every which way—in their inborn talents, interests, or characters, everyone can change and grow through efforts and experience. Did you know that Darwin and Tolstoy were considered ordinary children? That the photographer Cindy Sherman, who has been on almost every list of the most important artists of the twentieth century, failed her first photography course? That Geraldine Page, one of our greatest actresses, was advised to give it up for lack of talent?
You can see how the belief that valuable qualities can be developed creates a passion (热情) for learning. Why waste time proving how great you are, when you could be getting better? Why hide weaknesses instead of overcoming them? And why seek out the tried and true, instead of experiences that will better you? The passion for improving yourself and sticking to it, even when it’s not going well, is the feature (特征) of the growth mindset. This is the mindset that allows people to achieve success during some of the most challenging times in their lives.
1. According to Paragraph 5, the example of Darwin and Tolstoy shows that ________.A.success has nothing to do with natural gifts | B.it’s difficult to predict one’s future success |
C.achievements can be made through hard work | D.the valuable qualities can encourage people to learn |
A.carry out an honest evaluation of our qualities |
B.see success as the only way to prove IQ or talent |
C.focus on self-development rather than self-proving |
D.believe good things will happen during difficult times |
A.lead people to take the right mindset | B.advise people to evaluate their mindset |
C.get people to know the influence of mindset | D.explain the differences between two mindsets |
There was an ancient Chinese story. A naughty boy Mencius and his family lived next to the cemetery(墓地) . Mencius liked to hold funerals(葬礼) just like people around. His mother took him and they moved to a market. Then Mencius and his neighbors’ children learned to buy and sell meat. Finally, they moved again and lived next to a school. In this neighborhood, people treated each other politely. The mother of Mencius thought that it was the right living place for her son.
The story tells us the importance of people around us. For students, they can be role models. In a study, I interviewed some students at Bingham High School. These teens had lots of opinions about role models.
Teens need role models to provide directions for them. Jeff Pratt said, “Having a role model helps you decide where you want to go with your life.” A role model shows what a teen’s life could be like in the future.“Role models are people you admire, and those people can help make you be a good person.” This is Spencer Park’s opinion of what role models are and why it is important to have them.
“A role model is someone to look up to and try to learn good qualities from,” said Natalie Bean. When teens were asked “What is a role model like?” , the list included words such as encouraging, inspiring, strong-willed, honest, ready to stand up for what they believe in, helpful, easy to talk to, talented and cheerful. Teens want to learn from their role models how to succeed and how to carry on after failure.
Robbie Jenkins said, “Good role models are people that stand up for what is right and good. Role models encourage and inspire others.” Heidi Woolley said, “A good role model makes a teen do the best in school and life, and make much progress. Then he will have a right opinion of his own abilities and accept himself gradually. In this way, role models help build up a teen’s self-esteem.”
“The role models teens need are not the ones that appear in the media.” said Natalie Bean.
My study also shows students agree with that a true role model is not the person with the best job title, the greatest responsibility, or the greatest fame(名望). Anyone who inspires a child to achieve dreams in life can be a good role model.

3 . A learning style is a way of learning. Your preferred learning style is the way in which YOU learn best. Three learning styles that are often discovered in students are Type 1—the Auditory Learning Style, Type 2—the Tactile Learning Style, and Type 3—the Visual Learning Style. Read about each of these learning styles to find out YOUR preferred learning style.
Type 1: Auditory Learners learn best when information is presented in an auditory language form. Does listening to audio tapes help you learn better? Do you seem to learn best in classes in which special importance is given to teacher lectures and class discussions? Do you find yourself reading aloud or talking things out to get a better understanding? If YES, you are probably an Auditory Learner.
Type 2: Tactile Learners learn best in hands-on learning settings in which they can physically control something in order to learn about it. Do you learn best when you can move about and handle things? Do you do well in classes in which there is a lab part? Do you learn better when you have a real object in your hands rather than a picture of the object or a spoken or written description of it? If YES, you are probably a Tactile Learner.
Type 3: Visual Learners learn best when information is presented in a written language form or in another visual form such as pictures or maps. Do you do best in classes in which teachers do a lot of writing on the blackboard, provide clear handouts, and make wide use of an overhead projector (投影) ? Do you try to remember information by creating pictures in your mind? Do you take detailed written notes from your textbooks and in class? If YES, you are probably a Visual Learner.
Your learning style is your strength. Go with it whenever you can. When you can choose a class, try to choose one that draws heaviest on your learning style. When you can choose a teacher, try to choose one whose teaching method best matches your learning style. When you choose a major and future career, keep your learning style firmly in mind.
1. If you are an Auditory Learner, you are probably interested in .A.class discussions | B.clear handouts | C.written notes | D.real objects |
A.Learners of Type 1 learn best when they listen more and talk less in class. |
B.Learners of Type 2 prefer written descriptions to real objects in their hands. |
C.Learners of Type 3 often create pictures with teachers in their minds in class. |
D.Learners of any type need to choose classes which match their learning styles. |
3. By writing this passage, the writer wants to tell us that .
A.learning styles help us to realize our future dreams |
B.choosing the best learning style really helps us a lot |
C.achieving goals depends on our correct learning styles |
D.knowing about ourselves in learning styles is important |
4 . As an English, I can speak three languages—English, German and French, so do you think the British people are very good language learners? The fact is that they aren’t.
Some statistics (数据) from the survey done by the European Commission (欧盟委员会) showed that 62% of the British people only speak English. 38% speak at least one foreign language and 18% speak two or more. Compared with the British people, 56% of the people in other European countries speak at least one foreign language and 28% speak two or more. From this you can see that the British people are famous for not speaking foreign languages and that they are not good language learners in Europe.
And the survey also showed that English is the most widely-spoken foreign language. Many European people can have a conversation in English. That’s why my people don’t think it is necessary to learn a foreign language.
In Britain, students are not required to learn a foreign language. That means learning a foreign language is only an option at school. In UK schools it is common for children to start learning a foreign language at 11 and many of them give it up at 14. So why don’t students continue learning foreign languages at school? Because they think it is more difficult to get good marks in languages than in other subjects such as science or history.
To solve this situation, the British government is looking for different ways to improve language learning at school. One way is to start learning it at a much younger age. Another one is to give school children more choices.
Changing the British attitude (态度) to learning foreign languages may be a hard task but the government decides to try!

A man who wants to be successful always hopes for others’ guidance and he usually follows the same path of most people, but the question this man never asks himself is: are all of those people successful? Of course not! If you want to follow a crowd, then follow a successful one. However, in real life you’ll only find one successful person among hundreds of people, and that’s why following the crowd makes no sense at all.
Most people act without thinking wisely. If you always follow others because
they're greater than you in number, then sooner or later you'll discover that you're
making decisions you might regret later.
However, should we never follow the crowd? No. I'm not trying to say you should never follow the crowd, but instead I'm just asking you to think wisely before you take a decision. If you find others are right, there is no problem in following them, but if you have doubts about the direction they're moving in, don't follow them blindly.
