7 . Dear Anna Peterson,
▲ I ever did well in my study before. But now I find it difficult to concentrate on it. Even when I’m in school, in the quiet classroom and when the teacher is speaking in class, I can’t concentrate. I don’t think about anything. My mind goes nothing. And sometimes I think about something. It could be anything, a movie ... And then I act like one of the characters, and do this everywhere. I don’t even realize what I’m doing till something gets my attention and pulls me back to my real life.
I can’t always write down the important things my teacher says, because I write too slowly. I’m not good at writing and I usually hand in my homework late because I put off doing it until the last minute. So I often have to find different excuses to tell my teacher why I didn’t do my homework. I’m sure I’m going to fail my final exam in late January. I’m now so far behind other students that I don’t know how to catch up with them. But there is only one month left, you know. I am worried all day, and I know this won’t be of any help to me. I get distracted really easily.
My life has changed a lot. Can you help me?
Yours,
Mel Barnes

Traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) is an important part of Chinese culture. It has made great contributions to the development of China. The most commonly used are Chinese herbal medicine (草药) and acupuncture. Here is an e-mail from John to his sister which tells about acupuncture (针灸).
Dear Sis,
How are things back home? Everything’s going great here!
Today, I had acupuncture for the first time! I woke up this morning with a bad backache, so I called the hotel reception desk and asked if they knew of any nearby hospitals. They gave me a list of some places I could go to, and it included an acupuncture clinic (诊所) that was right next door, so I decided to have a try.
I was surprised when the clinic staff started putting in needles (针), because I hardly felt anything at first. I thought it would hurt, but in fact I didn’t even know that I had any needles sticking in me. Then I started feeling a warm sensation in my lower back, and I became very relaxed.
I think it must have helped, because my back stopped hurting. Afterwards, I went to a shop next door that sells Chinese herbal medicines. I was amazed because there were huge glass jars full of all kinds of roots, leaves, and plants, and all sorts of things I cannot even describe. Then behind the counters was a large cupboard going all the way up to the ceiling (天花板), full of wooden drawers containing different kinds of ingredients. I didn’t know what to buy, so I ended up buying two boxes of dried ginseng (人参) — one for me, and one as a gift for you. I’ll give it to you when I get back.
Love,
John
