3 . The winter holiday is coming. Cindy and her friends are talking about their plans for this winter holiday through WeChat. Here is the history of their WeChat group.

What’s your plan for the winter holiday? The week-long Spring Festival holiday starting on February 1 is usually a busy film season in China. There will be six new films. I plan to watch a film with popcorn. There are many things that I would like to do in my holidays. On January 22, I’ll take part in a winter camp. There I can learn some skills and practice English with the foreign teacher. I’ll stay there for a week. I can’t wait to have an exciting time. Oh, English is my weakness.

This winter, I’ll be a volunteer (志愿者) with Rainbow Project. We’ll work in the City Library. We help people find books they want and tidy up the books they return. It’s also a good chance to read more good books.      What a meaningful job! We plan a long trip to Harbin which has the most beautiful snow views. I think it’s going to be an enjoyable holiday. We can go skiing and watch ice lanterns. Are you kidding? COVID-19 is still not away from us. You should stay at home to protect yourself.

4 . There are twelve months in a year. My favorite month is October.

October 1st is National Day (国庆节). We have a seven-day holiday (假期). During the holiday, my parents often take me to see my grandparents.

There are also (也) some interesting school activities (活动) in October. On the 12th, we have a soccer game. I don’t love basketball because it’s difficult for me. But I love soccer. I love playing soccer and watching soccer games. We have a book sale on October 20th. I have three old books and I want to sell them. The art festival is fun. We have it on October 29th. My birthday is on this day, too. October is a really great month for me.

7 . In most countries, people usually eat traditional food on special holidays. A special day in North America is Thanksgiving. In America, this festival is always on the fourth Thursday in November, but in Canada (加拿大) it falls on the second Monday in October. Thanksgiving is a time to give thanks for food in the autumn and other good things people enjoy in life. Families see Thanksgiving as a time to get together and usually celebrate it with a big family meal. The main dish of this meal is always turkey (火鸡), a large bird. To go with the turkey, people often prepare other things, such as cornbread, mashed potatoes, and pumpkin or apple pie.

Here is one way to make turkey for a thanksgiving dinner.

First, mix (混合) together some bread pieces, onions, salt and pepper.

Next, fill the turkey with this bread mix.

Then, put the turkey in a hot oven (烤箱) and cook it for a few hours.

Finally, place the turkey on a large plate and cut it into thin pieces and eat the meat with vegetables like carrots and potatoes.

This Thursday, across the US, kids are skipping school(缺课) and going to work with their parents. They will be making copies, sending faxes(传真) and sweeping floors. This is because April 28 is Take Our Sons and Daughters to Work Day all over the US. This holiday     1     kids what it means to be a grown-up in the working world.

I still remember when this day started, I was very happy. Not only did I have the chance to miss school, but I also got to sit in my dad’s taxi all day long and we would go to a     2     for lunch.

But after only 20 minutes of driving around the city. I was very     3    . I couldn’t read my book in the car as I would get carsick(晕车) and my dad didn’t like to turn on the radio. I got hot and uncomfortable. People wouldn’t get into his taxi because they thought he already had a passenger: me—so nothing happened. It     4     years before we went out for lunch. I actually started to miss school.

While the point of the day is to give kids a chance to experience real-life jobs and give them an idea of the possibilities(可能性) for their futures, I got something     5     different from the day. I learned to appreciate(重视) school. Where else do you get to play with your friends, do science experiments, read great books and write stories all in one day?

Just as you’ll     6     learn to love your job later in life, learn to love school now. If you don’t already, try spending the day at work with your dad.

9 . Jack thinks every day is the same. It is hot before the sun rises. It is hot after the sun falls.

That day, Jack lies on his bed in his bedroom. He lifts a heavy hand and looks at his mobile. This time, Zadie sends a message to Jack. She hopes Jack has a great summer. But Jack thinks he is bored during the summer holiday.

A few days later, he goes to a swimming pool to swim with his friends, but when one of them jumps into the pool, the water splashes (溅到) on him. He is afraid and his friends laugh at him.

Then one evening, Jack is sitting in his room looking out of the window. It is a quiet and cool evening. For once, nobody is playing loud music. Jack can only hear the distant sound of the traffic on the road around Westbourne.

Suddenly there is a noise in the back garden. Nemo, a cat, jumps onto the fence, looks up at the sky, and meows.

“What is he looking at?” Jack thinks.

And then he hears a distant cry. A strange cry. A familiar cry.

A bird is flying in circles across the sky. Its black shape moves above the trees and houses. Jack knows that shape. He knows that cry. It is Falco. He watches it fly, happy and wild and free.

Jack checks his mobile. He has one new message：

The winter vacation (假期) this year is coming soon. What do you want to do during the vacation? Do you want to watch TV? Do you want to play?     1     I hope you can have a meaningful vacation.     2    

About study
