To celebrate the 70th birthday of our school, we had an interesting activity: designing our own school uniforms.

We were all excited about it. My classmate Pei Youyang designed three types of sports clothes to wear in different seasons. “These clothes are all loose and comfortable to play sports. To keep students safe at night, she also added three reflective stripes (反光条) on the trousers. Wang Chuhan made a series of dresses only for girls. “Most of the school uniforms look mostly the same, and the girls’ beauty is often not shown by the clothes,” said Wang. “So I designed some beautiful dresses to let girls show their youth and beauty confidently.”

As for me, I designed uniforms in a traditional Chinese style, such as the pattern of Xiangyun and ink paintings. The main colors are blue and jade green. I believe they’ll look good when students attend some formal meetings or ceremonies.

“I’m surprised that the students all did such a good job,” said Ms Sun Congmin from the school. “Their designs are pretty and useful. This is really a meaningful activity to show their talent and creativity.”

There are several reasons why school uniforms are a good idea.     1     The students feel that they belong to a particular group. When every pupil in the school wears the uniform, nobody has to worry about fashion. Everybody wears the same style of clothes.     2     A school in Ireland has introduced an interesting new uniform. On the edge(边沿) of the jacket, there is a piece of cloth that gives off light in the dark. When the children are walking or cycling to school on dark mornings, car drivers can easily see them.

    3     The answer to this question is not clear. One study in America found that students grades improved a little after the school introduced uniforms.     4     School uniforms are traditional in Britain, but some schools are starting to get rid of(放弃) them. Some very good schools don’t have a uniform policy.     5     Pupils at about 90 percent of British secondary schools wear uniforms.

Changing our clothes

Do you have to wear a school uniform every day? Do you enjoy wearing it? Some Australian students are trying to change their school’s dress code (着装规定).

Schoolgirls at Presbyterian Ladies’ College in Sydney can’t wear pants. They have to wear a knee-length (及膝的) tartan skirt (格子裙) or dress. It’s one of the school’s oldest traditions, dating back 100 years. But the girls want to change this strict rule.

They asked the school to add pants as another choice for their uniforms. “We should choose to wear whichever bottoms (下装) we want,” they wrote in a petition (请愿书) on change.org.

Some students think that girls have been held back from taking part in sports and outdoor activities because they have to wear dresses and skirts. “This kind of clothing is impractical (不实用的) in daily life and girls should feel comfortable when coming to school,” said one student who signed the petition.

New South Wales Premier Gladys Berejiklian said she understood their situation. “Young girls should be able to show their views. Speaking up on what you feel strongly about is how you make changes,” she said. The school is now discussing this matter.   

Design your own uniform

Work with someone to design (设计) a school uniform. Make sure that you and your classmates will all enjoy wearing it. It should be practical, comfortable, and suitable for both sexes. It should also look nice and represent (代表) your school.   

10 . At the moment, high school students in the state of Philadelphia, USA, can wear their own clothes. However, next year the high schools must do one of the following:

Either make students buy school uniforms (in other words, all students must wear the same uniforms).

Or say which colors must be worn, but let students buy their own clothes in these colors.

A survey made at Central High School, Philadelphia, showed that most of the students didn’t think that wearing school uniforms was a good idea.

Rachel didn’t like the idea of a uniform in the slightest. “It makes us look like prisoners. Everyone’s different, so why is the school trying to make us all the same?”

Sandra was wearing a brightly-colored shirt with her jeans. “No one else wears a shit like mine,” she said. “I’m the only one, and I like that. I can understand that the school needs a dress standard. It’s a problem if students come to school with their shits open. We all understand that, but no one wants uniform. Even my mom thinks it’s silly.”

Only one student, Ben, said he didn’t mind wearing a school uniform. He said, “I used to wear a school uniform when I lived in Australia for a year. It wasn’t so bad. You can wear a uniform and still be tidy. We used to wear grey trousers, a round-necked shirt and a jacket in blue or green. It wasn’t a problem.”
