1 . March 2 is Old Stuff Day(旧物日). It is all about old stuff. Things you used have been forgotten for ages in your home. You must have some old stuff around. And today is all about enjoying it. Because what’s better than finding something really great from days gone by?

It’s so easy to forget things you have. If we don’t use them every day, some things can be put away and stay there. And that’s not just the things in your home— technology grows so quickly, new toys come out all the time, new books keep coming out. In the age of new information, we can have so many things easily. Today is all about remembering the things we sometimes leave behind.

We’ve learned to value what age can bring to things. Wines, for example, are more valuable and tastier as they grow older. It’s certain that old things still have their uses, value or charm. People today will pay a pretty penny for stamps, toys, video games, board games, books, coins, and clothes of yesterday.

You can really get into the charm of old things by visiting a junk shop (旧货店). Another person’s old stuff could be your new stuff! Or maybe now is a good day to clean up? Old stuff could become a great gift for someone else, or you could always send your old things to a charity shop. If you’re free, you could turn your old clothes into new ones with just a little change.

Today could be a good day to visit your older families. You could ask your grandparents to tell you stories about family history, their childhood and their youth. Learn about what was going on in the world when they were growing up.

Most of all, remember that today’s new stuff will one day be old stuff.

1. What is Old Stuff Day?
A.A day to throw away old things.B.A day to follow new technology.
C.A day to get together with families.D.A day to enjoy and reuse old things.
2. From paragraph 3, we know that ________.
A.age brings people new thingsB.people love buying new things
C.people always clean up old stuffD.old stuff is still valuable and useful
3. Which of the following is a proper way to deal with old stuff?
A.Breaking them into pieces.B.Sending them to charity shops.
C.Forgetting them in some places.D.Turning them into waste things.
4. The author’s purpose in writing the text is to make people ________.
A.realize value of old stuffB.explore new technology
C.produce more old thingsD.remember family history

5 . This summer I attended my first music festival. Most of the festivalgoers needed to buy tickets, but we didn’t. Instead, we volunteered as festival managers. We each worked 3 shifts (轮班) - each shift was 8 hours long-in exchange for a free ticket to the festival.

Leeds Festival is a large music festival which takes place yearly at the end of August, and thousands of people attend it each year.

There were several different periods. Each of them was fit for a different music taste: rock, pop, alternative and dance. As well as the fantastic music, there were also funfair (杂耍) rides, food outlets and a silent disco. I loved silent discos: everyone had a set of headphones (耳机) with two channels and music was played through the headphones. As a result, people could dance and sing along to completely different songs!

While we weren’t working, we were free to enjoy the festival. We saw different kinds of artists across the weekend. I really enjoyed seeing Imagine Dragons, Vampire Weekend and, of course, Arctic Monkeys.

We camped for five nights and it was freezing every night! However, we had a really nice campsite. I had a great time and would certainly be returning the next year!

2. When is Leeds Festival held?
A.In June.B.In July.C.In August.D.In September.

C.Because people could listen to different songs silently.
D.Because people could sing and dance while they were listening to music silently.
4. Which of the following is NOT TRUE about Leeds Festival?
A.It’s held every year.
B.Many artists could be seen in August.

While Fridays are always the best day of the week, June 4, promises to be even more special this year. That’s because it also happens to be National Donut Day, which means it is your duty to consume (消费) one of the delicious fried treats! Surprisingly, the holiday was started by the Salvation Army to help raise much-needed money for the poor.

In 1917, volunteers arrived in France to take care of injured (受伤的) World War Ⅰ soldiers (士兵). To comfort the homesick soldiers, Salvation Army Ensign (少尉) Margaret Sheldon and fellow officer Helen Purviance used the limited-flour, sugar, and oil-at their disposal (支配) to make donuts.

The fresh donuts brought great joy to the US soldiers who lined outside the service hut (小屋), often waiting patiently for hours in cold weather, to get their hands on the special treat. They were soon dished out (分发) as many as 9,000 pieces daily. The success helped to lift the spirits of US soldiers. Later, it was so popular that National Donut Day became a celebration, which falls on the first Friday of June.

The holiday has since been accepted all over America by donut makers who often celebrate it by handing out free treats. This year, Krispy Kreme and Lamars Donuts will give a free donut to all customers. Many neighborhood stores also take part in this fun traditional activity, so be sure to check to visit the one closest to you. It is not surprising to hear that Americans consume over 10 billion donuts every year.

Though donuts are first an American tradition, similar treats are enjoyed by countries around the world.

Seventy percent of our planet is covered by one huge, continuous(连续的) body of Seawater—the ocean. In 2008, the United Nations recognized(确立) June 8 as World Oceans Day. It’s a day to think about the important role that the oceans play in our lives, the dangers that are facing our oceans and the action we can take to protect them.

The importance of our oceans

The ocean is home to a number of plaids and animals on Earth. Marine(海洋的) plants provide us with 70% of the oxygen we breathe. The ocean controls our climate(气候), providing heat in winter and cool air in summer. It also provides us with food and medicine. No matter where you live on the planet, your life need depend on the ocean.

The problems facing our oceans

The most urgent(紧急的) problem facing the ocean at the moment is plastic pollution. Reducing single-use plastic, including plastic bags and plastic bottles, has been an important theme for World Oceans Day for a number of years.

Climate change and rising sea temperatures are also a huge problem. Rising sea temperatures have a direct influence on weather pattern(模式) and are seen as partly responsible for an increase in extreme weather conditions.

How to celebrate the day

The day is celebrated in different ways, including special events at aquariums(水族馆) and zoos, beach and river clean-ups, school activities, art contests and film festivals.这样的活动能使人们想起海洋的重要性。
