It’s been two weeks since I returned to New Zealand, but I’m still thinking of the exciting city life in Hong Kong. In New Zealand, life is   different. I miss the delicious sweet soup so much.

The weather has been bad these days.Yesterday 1 got a cold and didn’t go to school today. I hate taking medicine but I have to take it. I must get well soon because I will have tests on science and geography next week. I must prepare for the tests this time so that I won’t fail again. I remember that you like our local hand cream (护手霜), but it is quite expensive in Hong Kong. I bought you some last weekend and I am sending it to you. It’s much cheaper here than in Hong Kong.

It’s almost the end of August. It’s time to pack your school bag and get ready for the new school term. Take good care.

2 . In Pontevedra, Spain, people don’t shout. Since cars are banned (禁止) in the city, there are no horns (喇叭) or noises from cars. People don’t have to try hard to make themselves heard. What you hear in the street, instead, is the singing of birds.

“Listen,” says Miguel Lores, the mayor, opening the windows of his office. Human voices rise from the street below. “More than 14,000 cars used to pass along this street every day. There were more cars passing through the city in a day than people living here.”

Lores became the mayor (市民) in 1999. He spent months walking around the city. “The historical (历史的) city is dead,” he said one day. “It is full of cars. It is heavily polluted. There are a lot of traffic accidents. The elderly and children aren’t able to use the streets because of cars. People who have a chance to leave have done so.”

At first, Lores thought of improving traffic conditions (状况). However, he couldn’t come up with a good plan. After lots of discussions, the government finally decided to get rid of cars.

The change has brought Pontevedra many benefits. Traffic accidents are now fewer. CO₂ emissions (排放物) are 70 percent down. Many people are moving to the city, making it lively again.

Most local citizens like the change. Ramiro Armesto, a mother of two young children, said, “In the past, the first thing to see in the morning was traffic jams. Now, the city is cleaner, quieter and safer.” Raquel Garcia, another parent, said she had stayed in many cities around the world. However, she had never lived in a city as “easy to live in” as Pontevedra. “Even if it’s raining, I walk everywhere. The feeling is wonderful,” she added. “For me, Pontevedra is paradise (天堂).”

10 . Taiwan is famous for its night markets. It’s fun for you to spend time walking through the night markets. It’s common to find night markets in most cities and towns in Taiwan. They take place on the same streets every day. During the day, these streets are quiet. At night, there are crowds of people.

Usually people arrive at three or four in the afternoon. By 6:00 p.m., the streets are full of people, including many tourists. Foodies (吃货) can taste different kinds of snacks here. The food is not only delicious but cheap. When you’re just a little hungry, you can buy some snacks. When you are really hungry, you can sit down for a meal. Smelly tofu is popular, although it really smells terrible.

Besides the food, there are shops that sell all kinds of things such as clothes, toys, and books.Things sold at night markets are usually cheap. If you think the price is high, you can bargain with the seller. You may get a lower price.

There are also fun games at the night market. In one game, you throw plastic rings around the top of a bottle. In another game, you shot with a toy gun. If you do well in them, you can win a prize. They’re such interesting games that even foreign tourists are fond of them.
