Many people get nervous sometimes, like when giving a speech. But social anxiety disorder (SAD) (社交焦虑症), or social phobia (社交恐惧症), is more than just shyness. It includes strong fear of certain social situations—especially situations that are unfamiliar or in which they feel they will be watched or judged by others. They may be afraid that people will think badly of them. So they try as much to avoid social situations.
Social phobia has a bad influence on their relationships, performance in school or at work, and daily life. So people with social phobia make efforts to stop it. Unluckily, they usually fail. For example, a person with a phobia of speaking in public prepares his speech again and again to make sure he does not fail. However, this only makes him pay more attention to any mistakes he makes. Even a small mistake may make him anxious (焦虑的).
PHOBIAS BY AGE AND GENDERSo here comes the question: Can social anxiety be overcome?
Of course you can ask for professional help. However, there are also other things you can do to self-manage. Below are some ideas:
Number the social activities based on how anxious you feel from 1 to 10. Number 1 means the activity gives you the least anxiety. Taking small steps means to do several activities numbered “1” every week. Just get yourself out there and be more comfortable with social situations. It is one of the best ways to beat the anxiety itself. Once you feel better, you can try other activities numbered “2”, “3” and so forth.
Record your thoughts
Write down your feelings and how you deal with them in social situations. And write down things you can improve on. Whether it’s changing your mind, doing something in a better way, or finding another choice, there are many things to do in a healthy manner. Gradually, you will find the cause and the solution.
Focus on physical health
Each body part can’t work independently. To keep your mental health, you must care for your physical health. Try to eat well, sleep well and exercise often.
DID YOU KNOW? According to The World Health Organization (WHO), “Health is a state of complete physical, mental and social well-being and not merely the absence of disease or infirmity.” |
If you find yourself a little nervous in social situations, just actively face it, you can learn to be comfortable in social situations and enjoy your life.
1. When might people with social phobia feel anxious? (One example is OK.)2. According to Chart II, which age group are most likely to experience social phobia? What could be the reason?
3. Why does the writer talk about the person who prepares for the speech?
4. What’s the subtitle (小标题) of the first advice?
5. Why should people record their thoughts?
6. What’s your understanding of health? How can you keep healthy?
It’s reported that Kristen Tapping who graduated from London South Bank University has invented a bike wheel that can help deal with air pollution. It’s called ROLLOE.
The wheel uses fins to draw-in air as it turns. It then uses filters (过滤器) to take in polluted air and give off clean air back into the environment. The wheel can filter more air when it goes faster.
Tapping said she was encouraged to create the wheel when she was biking around London. “On streets, you always notice the pollution: the heat, the gases and the smell,” she said. She predicted (预测) that if 10 percent of cyclists in London had a ROLLOE on their bikes, they could filter about 266,865 m³ of air a day, although this had to be tested.
A report showed that because of air pollution, London’s health costs were the highest out of the 432 European cities. The World Health Organization (WHO) has also said that outdoor air pollution caused about 4.2 million deaths around the world each year.
Tapping wants to use the wheel on shared bike projects at first, with the aim of making the wheels available for all bikes to use. She says she would also like to create a wheel available in different sizes.

Progress means the act of going forward. Making any kind of progress can make us happy.

According to the World Health Organization, loneliness can be bad for one’s health. In many countries, even young people are now feeling lonely. What can be done to fight this widespread loneliness? Asa Koski is a social scientist in Sweden. She believes one way is to encourage people to say hello to strangers. She recently started the “Sag hej! (Say hi!) project”.
Winters where Koski lives are long and cold. But she doesn’t think the weather alone has caused young Swedes to feel lonely. People now depend too much on digital (数码的) technology. It is a far bigger reason.
American-born Lauren Ell first came to Sweden as an exchange student in 2006. “Making friends with Swedish students was almost impossible,” she says. Like Koski, she thinks digital technology is part of the problem. Even in 2006, many of her classmates would just go home after school and play video games. She thinks the “Sag hej! project” could be a good way to start solving the problem.
Teachers in Lulea have reported that the project is already working successfully. Students are challenging each other to see how many “hi’s” they can get in a day.
“It’s not only close friendships that matter,” says Koski. “Saying hello to someone sends out a message that you’re willing to talk to them. For some people, that can really make a difference.”

A friend of mine and I were sitting by a window in an excellent restaurant. My friend explained to me the importance of believing good things will happen. She called this “manifesting”. There are many books on how to “manifest” success. According to these books, you need to imagine success strongly, and then you will succeed.
My friend had a wonderful job. Thanks to it, she had traveled to many interesting places and had enjoyed countless good meals. There were people with the same skills as she had, but many of them just do boring, low-paying jobs. My friend, instead, achieved these things because she in her own words had imagined that she would achieve them.
“Manifesting” can help people face difficult challenges. People who “manifest” believe that success will come to them, and this gives them the courage to move ahead. But it can also help people feel better about their lives. They expect success, and so they feel successful. This, I think, is close to the placebo (安慰剂) effect. In studies of new medicines, researchers often give some patients sugar pills and say the pills are medicine. This helps them find out how well the medicine truly works. Many people use something similar to a placebo in their daily lives. College kids often choose a special shirt or baseball cap to wear during exams. They feel it will bring them good luck. Here in China, one of the newest placebos is “Einstein’s brain”. It’s on sale on shopping sites. Customers are told that after paying a little money, they will develop a brain like that of the famous scientist. Do buyers really believe this? Of course not. But by “manifesting” a super-quick brain, they may feel relaxed and, as a result, think more clearly during exams. After studying enough, they may find this kind of trick to be a great help.
Well, “manifesting” works in some way, however, if you don’t do anything, how can you ever have any good luck simply because of “manifesting”?
1. What does “manifesting” mean in the passage?A.Imagining success strongly. |
B.Realizing your dream clearly. |
C.Predicting the future correctly. |
A.Because she is more talented. |
B.Because she believes in herself. |
C.Because she has experienced a lot. |
A.It encourages them to keep moving. |
B.It allows them to experience difficult lives. |
C.It helps them understand the meaning of success. |
A.To have fun. | B.To become smarter. | C.To get “good luck”. |
A.Manifesting hardly brings good luck to people. |
B.Though manifesting helps, hard work is necessary. |
C.People are sure to achieve their dreams by manifesting. |
