Happy Rain on a Spring Night Good rain knows its time right; It will fall when comes spring. With wind it steals in night; Mute, it moistens each thing. Over wild lanes dark cloud spreads; In boat a lantern looms. Dawn sees saturated reds; The towns heavy with blooms. — Translated by Xu Yuanchong |
When Tang Dynasty poet Du Fu (712~770) wrote this poem, he was living in Chengdu. Sometimes he went to farm in the field. The poem shows his care for farmers.
The very first word, “good”, shows the poet’s joy and love for the spring rain. The rain is good indeed, as it knows the right time to come. Here the poet uses personification (拟人), as if the rain were smart enough to know that it should come in time for the farmer’s busy plowing season.
When the rain comes, it appears during the night. Unlike the thunder and lightning of summer storms, the quiet spring rain makes its contributions without being known.
In the night sky, the clouds look dark and heavy, showing that there will be enough rain during the night. Then the poet imagines: tomorrow morning, all of the flowers in the city will bloom after the rain.

4 . I am Jack. I walked into the house on Saturday afternoon. I was very sad because my bike was broken and I wanted to use it that evening. While I opened the door, I called out, “Could somebody help me repair my bike?” There was no answer. So I walked around to see if anybody was at home. “Is anybody at home?” I called.
I found my Dad in the workshop. “Did you find Somebody?” he asked. “Or did Nobody help you? Do you know the story, by the way?”
I shook my head, so he said while he went on working, “I’ll tell you a story. I’m surprised you haven’t heard it before.”
“This is a story about four people: Everybody, Somebody, Anybody and Nobody...”
“Say it again,” I asked, and my Dad repeated it.
“Ah, I get the idea.”
“What’s the problem?”
“My bike is broken.”
“So I hear. Who do you want to help you, Anybody, Everybody, Somebody or me?”
“As you’re here, Dad, could you help me?”
“Sure, bring it in and we’ll have a look at it together.”
That’s what I love about my Dad. He never gets angry and he’s always telling stories. That was the last time I asked for somebody to help me. Now I ask my friends directly for help and they ask me.
