3 . The Nobel Prize in Literature, which has been awarded annually almost every year since 1901, netted(净赚)the winning author 747,000 pounds, a medal and a certificate (证书), and the legal duty to deliver a lecture in Sweden at some future dates. The winner was selected, as usual, by the Swedish Academy, which also picked a second laureate (获奖者)this year to make up for the fact that no prize was presented in 2018 because of a scandal(丑闻).
The Nobel Prize in Literature for 2018 was awarded to the Polish author Olga Tokarczuk (奥尔加·托卡尔丘克) for “a narrative imagination that with encyclopedic (百科全书式的)passion represents the crossing of boundaries as a form of life”. She won last year’s Man Booker International Prize for her novel Flights. Her representative works (代表作) include Drive Your Plow Over the Bones of the Dead and Primeval and Other Times.
The Nobel Prize in Literature for 2019 was awarded to the Austrian author Peter Handke (彼得·汉德克) for “an influential work that with linguistic ingenuity(语言的独创性)has explored the periphery and the specificity of human experience”. His representative works include A Sorrow Beyond Dreams and Slow Homecoming.
Before the announcement of the Nobel Prize in Literature winners, there were also two nominees(被提名者)who have attracted much attention. Chinese people were keeping an eye on the nominee Can Xue. Can Xue, whose real name is Deng Xiaohua, was born in central China’s Hunan Province in 1953. She had a tough childhood, working as a worker in a street factory for eight years. Her life experience has formed her own unique literary path. Can’s books have been translated and published outside China. Frontier, published in the US in 2017, won attention and applause of the West.
The other hot guess was the Japanese writer Haruki Murakami (村上春树) whose books and stories had been bestsellers in Japan as well as internationally, with his work being translated into 50 languages and selling millions of copies outside his native country. His work has received numerous awards. Internet users kept an eye on him in the Nobel Prize in Literature because he had become a hot guess for years. His representative works include Norwegian Wood, Kafka on the Shore and 1Q84.

5 . The Vitality Big Half gets underway this morning. It was first launched last year and saw 11 ,000 take part, with the aim of bringing Londoners together and celebrating the diversity of the capital. A festival is being held at the finish line with music, food and activities throughout the day.
The strong winds this morning unfortunately mean that the scheduled music performances from local talents have had to be cancelled as it's impossible to build the temporary stage structures for the festival. The food will still be available and the event will include cooking classes from MasterChef Steve Kielty, and there will also be running challenges, trampolining(蹦床运动), craft making and gardening advice.

Greenwich Park will also be where The Vitality Big Festival is held between 9 am and 4 pm today.
What is the route:
The Big Half will be starting at Tower Bridge and runners will then follow a 13.1-mile route that will take them past Shadwell and Limehouse, before circling around Canary Wharf.
Half marathon runners will then follow up the River Thames back towards Wapping and then go over Tower Bridge and head towards Southwark Park.
The route continues along the south side of the River Thames and circles around Rotherhithe before joining the Little Half runners and travelling through Deptford towards the finish line at Cutty Sark.

6 . A company in San Francisco, California, has found a way to turn used plastic bottles into women's shoes. Every day, millions of Americans drink water and other liquids from plastic bottles. More than 60 million of them are thrown away each day. Many of the plastic bottles end up in landfills or are burned with other waste products.
A San Francisco-based company called Rothy's, however, turns this plastic waste into environmentally friendly shoes. Roth Martin is the company's co-founder. He explains how they turn plastic into soft material for women's feet. They take plastic, clean it, and break it down into small pieces. Then they press them through a device that makes soft fibers. Those fibers are then bonded together. This is done by a 3-D machine. It is designed to reduce waste while people are making the shoes. The knitted stuff and the inner part of the shoe are then attached to the shoe's outer part called the sole(鞋底). This outer sole is also made from environmentally friendly material: responsibly sourced no-carbon rubber.
Rothy's shoes are sold online. They are flat shoes, with either a rounded or pointed toe. They come in different colors and designs. They cost either $ 125 or $ 145 per pair, depending on the design. After American actress Gwyneth Paltrow discovered them, the demand for the shoes grew. Martin says there is no shortage of material to fill that demand. “We're not going to run out of water bottles any time soon, so we have a limitless supply of material, and I think that is a good sign for our future.” When the environmentally friendly shoes wear out, customers can return them at no cost to a company that uses the recycled material to make other products.
For now, the shoes are only available to be shipped in the United States. However, the company says it will add international shops in the near future.

7 . Dragging a sleigh loaded with enough presents for the world's children can be no easy skill. But, since ancient times, the duty has been performed by a team of beloved reindeer.
Soon, however, we may have to start looking around for a stronger type of animal, as new research shows the species is becoming increasingly puny. A 16-year survey on the arctic Norwegian islands, Svalbard, found the reindeer there have declined in weight by an alarming 12 percent.
The reduction in average body weight is being blamed on global warming. In the research presented lately at a meeting of the British Ecological Society in Liverpool, scientists have explained how upward temperatures are robbing female reindeer of nutrients during important periods of pregnancy.
Snow in Svalbard typically covers the ground for eight months of a year, which, combined with low temperatures, limits grass growth to June and July. But as summer temperatures increase by around 1.5 ℃, grass has become more productive, allowing female reindeer to gain more weight by autumn and therefore to have more babies. However, winters have brought with them greater rainfall which freezes when it settles on the snow. Reindeer can often access the poor food sources beneath the snow by clearing it away with their antlers(鹿角), but they cannot break through the hard ice. As a result, female reindeer are becoming starved, causing them to lose their babies or give birth to the much lighter young.
Despite the findings, reindeer appear to be suffering less from the effect of climate change than some other arctic species. Last week the scientists warned that a third of the world's polar bears could disappear in the next 40 years.

9 . Would you save a woman, a child or a dog in a car crash? An experiment has investigated human morality(道德观)and ranked countries based on who they would save in the event of a certain death situation.
The findings show the value of life varies according to different countries. French people, for example, are far more likely to save women than men. Lithuania ranks in the top 10 for saving both the young and the healthy. The four characters most people saved in the experiment are a baby, a little girl, a little boy and a pregnant woman.
The experiment put forward difficult ethical(伦理的)decisions such as choosing between the lives of a family of four crossing the road and a group of old people going the other way. Quandaries(两难境地)like this will one day be faced by autonomous vehicles that will be programmed with rules that place value on human life.
Tests into the moral decisions involving almost forty million people around the world, including the English, have found that the lives of women and men are widely held in equal regard. The French however resist the trend as they think the lives of women have far more weight than those of men.
Dr Edmond Awad, of the MIT Media Lab, who is the lead author, said, “The study is basically trying to understand the kinds of moral decisions that driverless cars might have to turn to. We don't know yet how they should do that.” He added, “we find that there are three elements that people seem to approve of the most.”
“These are that humans are saved over animals, that many people are saved rather than a few, and that the young are saved rather than the old.”
Dr Awad added, “The main preferences are to some degree universally agreed upon. But the degree to which they agree with this varies among different groups or countries.”
1. According to Para. 2, which of the following is least likely to be saved in danger?A.A little girl. | B.A little boy. |

A.It treats lives of women and men equally. |
B.It thinks the lives of the young come first. |
C.It attaches more value to women's lives. |
D.It shows extraordinary respect for the old. |
A.Animals are saved over humans. |
B.The lives of many people will be considered first. |
C.The lives of the old are above those of the young. |
D.The three elements are equally agreed upon. |
10 . Fuerteventura is a great place awaiting your discovery. Here are some reasons.
La Concha beach
Located in the Concha bay, the La Concha beach is one of the most popular beaches, which is dressed in white sand and beautified with calm water. The beach is close to the town, and at sunset, most tourists rush to see the skies turn beautiful colours in just a few short moments. At low tide(海水的低潮), small pools of water form, and these are great for the little members of the family to take a dive in. There are enough parking lots and plenty of restaurants to choose from.
Corralejo Natural Park
If you want to experience the desert beauty of Fuerteventura, Corralejo Natural Park will be the best place. It is a coin with two sides. One is characterized by volcanic scenery, and the other is white sand that has been cleansed by the blue water of the Atlantic Ocean. Getting to the park can be easily done by road, but exploring it demands that you put on your hiking shoes and take a walk through the natural wonderland.
Costa Calma beach
Costa Calma beach is characterized by blue waters and white sand. The beach is not packed, so you will get a chance to be just with your thoughts as you sunbathe on the sand. When the winds are swift, Costa Calma beach turns into a hot spot for surfers, ideal for those wanting to get a surfing course. The road leading to the beach is fenced by green plants meaning the magic starts even before you get there.
Cofete Beach
It's hard to find a fitting description for this wild beach. Its shoreline is great for its golden sand and wild water. Getting to Cofete Beach is not easy: perhaps that's why this place is still in its original state. The road has difficult spots that require expert driving skills. However, if you can tolerate it, you will be treated with some amazing views.
