1 . The “24 solar terms” (节气) originated and was first used in China. It was created thousands of years ago on the basis of practical needs of agricultural. Ancient Chinese people used it to guide agricultural production, explain special climate signs and even come up with healthy living tips. Last year, the 24 solar terms was added to UNESCO's world cultural heritage list(联合国教科文组织世界文化遗产名录). Now, it has been brought to life thanks to a creative designer from Southwest China's Guizhou Province.
On the eve of this year's Qingming Festival, Shi Changhong released (发布) his version of reproduced and packaged characters for each solar term in the form of “moving art” of gifs. Since their first release on Zcool on March 29, the gifs have won great praise among the general public and quickly flooded the social media with millions of hits during the festival period.
To maximize publicity, Shi released his work in three forms: the video, the animation and pictures. The background sounds add to the brilliance.
“When I watch the short video, I can strongly feel the Chinese-style elements hidden in it. And it is really cool to liven up traditional Chinese culture in such a unique way.” WeChat user Xiao Feifei said.
“It is really a comfort to me to see so many people like my latest work. To be honest, it would really surprise me if the work had not aroused great interest among Chinese people. The 24 solar terms is a deeply rooted concept that covers the essence of Chinese wisdom. However, only a small portion of people know all the names or the correct order of those terms. My intention is to increase Chinese people’s self-awareness to learn more about our traditional fine culture. Actually, the 24 solar terms work is only a part of my whole design program ‘Charm China’, which I started a year ago.” Shi told China Daily.

2 . Online, English has become a common language for users from around the world. In the process, the language itself is changing. There are now thought to be some 4.5 billion web pages worldwide. Some language experts predict that within 10 years English will occupy the internet — but in forms very different to what we accept and recognize as English today.
That’s because people who speak English as a second language already outnumber native speakers. And increasingly, they use it to communicate with other non-native speakers, particularly on the internet where less attention is paid to grammar and spelling and users don’t have to worry about their accent (口音).
Users of Facebook already socialize in a number of different “Englishes” including Indian English, Spanish English and Korean English. While these different styles have long existed within their cultures, they’re now expanding and coming online. Technology companies are introducing newly-developed English words with products aimed at enabling users to add words that are not already in the English dictionary. And most large companies have English websites, while smaller businesses are learning that they need a common language — English — to reach global customers.
The increasing popularity of the internet allows more languages to develop quickly. “Most people actually speak several languages — it’s less common to only speak one,” says Mr. Munro. “English has taken its place as the world’s common language, but it’s not pushing out other languages.” Instead, other languages are pushing their way into English, and in the process creating something new.

6 . U. S. growers produced $2.2 billion in strawberries in 2020, mostly in California, according to the U. S. Department of Agriculture. But consumers discarded an estimated 35% of strawberries due to spoilage. To reduce consumer waste, the J.R. Sim-plot Company and Plant Sciences Inc. have teamed up to edit the DNA of strawberries and make these new-improved fruits available on the commercial market.
The new technology will improve the shelf life of strawberries and extend their growing season. What’s more, it may help . farmers achieve higher production on less land, with reduced water and labor needs. In this way, farmers can grow healthier strawberry plants more efficiently, and the fruits will stay fresh for longer.
The companies will use CRISPR-Cas9 to edit the strawberries’ genes. This technology works like the cut-and-paste command on a computer. It allows scientists to identify a gene in the strawberry and cut it out. Then, they can sew the two ends of the gene back together or replace the old gene with the one that codes for an improvement.
Using CRISPR-Cas9 technology is much faster and more efficient than the selective breeding of cross, which can take years. It consists of crossing plants with the most desirable qualities over and over again until the ideal plant is achieved. ButCRISPR-Cas9 allows scientists to come straight to the point and avoid spending much time on plant breeding. Plants modified by CRISPR-Cas9 technology are nearly the same as plants bred using traditional methods.
“We are still working with everything that nature has provided. With traditional breeding, whatever features nature has kicked out of the DNA, that’s the hand you have been played,” Zachary Lippman, a plant biologist, told National Geographic. “With gene editing, now you are having an ace (王牌) up your sleeve.”The two companies are currently working on mapping out the genes of their strawberry varieties so they can identify which genes code for which features. If successful, they’ll launch the first commercially available gene-edited strawberries in the next years.

8 . I wanted to be a journalist. But my parents reminded me that maths makes money, so off to an engineering school I went. In my post-university young-adult life, I’ve managed to become “conventionally successful”. As a female engineer, I worked for a big oil company and owned a home. My life was laid out in front of me, and I didn’t like what I saw.
So, I did what any respectable 24-year-old would do and left my life behind. I said goodbye to my boyfriend and pulled out my suitcase. I threw myself alone into the world with the grace and beauty of a baby deer taking its first steps with skateboards under its feet. I bloodied my knees riding a mountain bike through the red rocks of Utah. I went to a thermal (温暖的) bath party in Budapest. I spent four days trudging (费力地走) through Yellowstone with 50 pounds on my back. Two Peruvian women along my Andean trek taught me how to roast coffee and helped me practise Spanish. It wasn’t Vienna’s cultural museums; it was a sunny patch of grass beside the Danube river with someone from my hostel who quickly became a friend. It wasn’t Yellowstone’s Old Faithful Geyser (老实泉) launching into the air; it was charging through Montana’s ordinary landscape playing music so loud that the car windows shook. The truth is that I didn’t actually need to be abroad to have almost any of my favourite experiences. They were just small everyday moments that happened to happen abroad, leading me to realise that the true value of my flight tickets was not the landmarks, but rather becoming an active participant in my own life.
I now spend less time shopping online and more time lying alone on the floor listening to an album cover-to-cover. I ask my friends how they’re doing; sometimes, I surprise them with flowers to see them smile. I tell everyone to have a good day.
Maybe I’ll continue to be selfish for the next five years and touch down in more countries. Maybe I’ll stay grounded in my home city, but the idea no longer bothers me. Armed with new wisdom earned in a year of travel, I know with complete confidence that there’re adventures hiding in any aspect of my life—as long as I’m awake enough to look for them.
