1 . Mawson was an Australian explorer and scientist who explored the Antarctic with a team of fellow adventurers in 1912. His travels in the frozen continent brought him worldwide _______. 3 . The part of the environmental movement that draws my firm’s attention is the design of buildings. Today, thousands of people come to ________ building conferences, and the idea that buildings can be good for people and the environment will be increasingly ________ in years to come. Back in 1984 we discovered that most manufactured products for decoration weren’t designed for ________ use. The “energy-efficient” sealed commercial buildings constructed after the 1970s energy crisis ________ indoor air quality problems caused by materials such as paint, wall covering and carpet. So for 20 years, we’ve been looking for ways to make these materials ________   for people and the planet.

Home builders can now use materials, such as green paints, that release significantly ________   amounts of chemical compounds, which people believe don’t ________ the quality of the air.   ________, our basic design strategy is focused not simply on being “less bad” but on creating ________ healthful materials that can be either safely returned to the soil or ________ by industry again and again. For example, the world’s largest carpet manufacturer has already ________ a carpet that is fully and safely recyclable.

Look at it this way: no one ________ to create a building that destroy the planet. But our current industrial systems are basically causing these conditions, whether we like it or not. 4 . When people talk about the future, we like to think that we will be able to drive out of our garages and take to the ________ in our own personal flying car. The advantages are obvious. Some people ________ this technology will allow complete three-dimensional freedom of movement. We could fly at 489 kilometres per hour, ________ traffic lights, busy roads and speeding tickets. However, some people point to the disadvantages of flying cars. They claim that there are certain to be problems with traffic ________. Another big problem is mechanical ________. What will happen if they break down? ________, if they become popular, there is likely to be another big problem: air traffic congestion. So it looks like flying cars face more than a few problems if they are to get off the ground!

Most of us have printed out an electronic document on paper, but think about the ________ of printing out a three-dimensional object in plastic. 3D printers build an object using layers line-by-line like a(n) ________ printer until the object is complete. Vehicle companies like BMW and Volkswagen already use 3D printers to make life-size models of car parts. At the moment the process is slow and quality is ________, but before long it might be possible to see a product on a website and then ________ it to your printer at home. In the future we could make our own furniture, jewellery, cups, plates, shoes and toys from designs on our computers, and reduce the amount of ________ we have to do.

Imagine having your own Ironman suit. There are several companies trying to build a practical robot ‘exoskeleton’. This is a suit of robot arms and legs which follows your ________. It will allow the wearer to lift heavy objects, walk long distances and even punch through walls! There are ________ military advantages for this technology and might help people to walk again after disease or injury. However, besides cost and battery life, another problem is that a badly ________ robot suit could injure the wearer because you wouldn’t want your robot leg or arm bending the ________ way.

5 . Ritch Addison was a shy kid. In elementary school, he was too timid to speak up for himself. When he got to high school, he decided to make a(n) _______ and began to develop a sharp sense of humor to prevent the other kids _______ him.

“I believe laughter is the best medicine, for it has the power to heal and unite,” Addison said. “So I was _______ up my shyness by joking and making fun of others.”

His new approach _______. Being humorous, he made more friends and gained _______. “When I got a hundred on the test while someone didn’t,” Addison said. “I would kid him _______ about it.”

6 . In 2019, I was staying at a fitness camp in Thailand. After doing 2.5 hours of kickboxing, I began to cough. Thinking it was probably from the intense workout, I brushed off the _________.

But over the next few hours, I started struggling to_________breathe and my heart began to _________. I panicked and decided to get help. As I was _________myself to the front desk, a Thai woman saw me and asked what was wrong. I tried to _________that I couldn’t breathe.

It is hard to describe the __________that I felt at the time, as well as the relief and thankfulness I felt being surrounded by so many __________strangers who took care of me. I don’t know what would have happened without them.

7 . Five years ago, I was a trail ride leader at a holiday farm in Victoria. My favourite horse was a warmblooded called Holly, a chestnut mare. Aged seven, she was _________, sweet-natured and well-trained; the only _________with Holly was her vivid imagination. I was constantly surprised by Holly’ s ability to be_________ by rabbits, the wind or even shadows - sometimes her own shadow!

One day, as we headed back from a ride on the beach, Holly and I were_________the way over the hilly area. When we got to one particularly long, steep hill, Holly began to twitch (抽动) her ears and step in place. So, when she_________ to sniff(嗅) and give all the _________that she believed the ‘horse-eating monsters’ were close, I became a little worried.

I have heard that horses have a better sense of__________ than dogs. I hadn't seen it __________ before that moment.__________, while we waited in reality for just a second or two - but for what felt like a century - the snake awoke and glided calmly off into the bush.

8 . It is an honor for me to give this speech as one of the graduating students, and welcome you to this special Graduating Ceremony 2020 in Tsinghua University.

This is a _______ moment. We are stepping up to another period of our lives at a time of great hardship and global _______. Tsinghua keeps in mind its global family, and hopes this ceremony will help _______ sad memories, refresh beautiful ones and _______ more wonderful memories into our lives.

Each of us has different stories to share, of amazing life experiences and challenges. Please allow me to _______ with you the course of my journey which has made me what I am today.

I was born in the middle of war, which caused my family to _______ Serbia for three years. When the war ended, we returned to Bosnia _______ I was unfortunately raised by a single parent. My mother, who is and will ever be my heroine, was the only figure who _______ me, supported me and kept me on the right way. I thanked her so much because only she is _______ for a huge part of my success. I will always remember her teachings, “to complain less and always find solutions at the price of whatever it takes”, which brought me to ________, an ancient land of new hopes.

During the COVID-19 outbreak, I got the best ________ to understand China. I saw millions of people united with one goal—to win the battle ________ this epidemic(流行病). Everyone has a role to ________ against the virus. In Tsinghua, I played a little but necessary role.

9 . Clothes play a critical part in the conclusions we reach by providing clues to who people are, who they are not, and who they would like to be. They tell us a good deal about the wearer’s background, personality, status, mood, and social outlook.

Since clothes are such an important source of social information, we can use them to _______ people’s impression of us. Our appearance _______ particular significance in the original phases of interaction that is likely to occur. An elderly middle - class man or woman may be alienated (疏远) by a young adult who is dressed in an unconventional manner, _______ the person’s education, background, or interests.

People tend to _______ what certain types of clothes mean. Adolescent girls can easily agree on the _______ of girls who wear certain outfits, including the number of boyfriends they likely have had and whether they drive or drink.
