Inspiration 4: Amateur astronauts set for orbital spaceflight

Four “amateur astronauts” are about to launch into orbit in another landmark mission for space tourism. It’s the latest flight to help open up access to space for paying customers, following on from       1     by Richard Branson and Jeff Bezos.

The trip has been paid for by Us billionaire businessman Jared Isaac-man, who will travel with three crew-mates. A healthcare worker, a science educator and a data     2     will circle the Earth with Mr Isaac-man for three days.

They hope to inspire others with their adventure and to raise money for children’s cancer medicine. The mission has been named Inspiration 4     3    .

The crew’s Dragon vehicle, manufactured by Elon Musk’s company Space X, will ride atop a Falcon-9 rocket. It is     4     to launch from Florida’s Kennedy Space Center at 20:02 EDT on Wednesday (01:02 BST, Thursday), or very shortly after.

The mission follows hot on the heels of Sir Richard Branson’s flight aboard his Virgin Galactic rocket plane on 11 July, and fellow billionaire Jeff Bezo’s trip to space nine days later in the New Shepard vehicle.

Some commentators have voiced concern about the     5     impact on the Earth’s climate of spaceflights like this one.

Space X’s Falcon-9 rocket uses highly-refined kerosene(煤油)fuel which produces the greenhouse gas carbon dioxide (CO2), along with nitrogen oxides, which also help     6     to warming. The emissions from rocket launches remain tiny compared with the aviation industry, though they are     7     to grow.

In the 60 years since Soviet cosmonaut Yuri Gagarin first went into space, fewer than 600 people have followed in his footsteps; and most of those have been military-trained personnel flying on government-     8     missions. Inspiration 4 is different. It’ll be a fully     9     purchased and operated orbital flight.

California-based Space X intends to sell many more orbital flights to interests beyond traditional space agencies. Nasa helped fund the development of a lot of the technology used by Elon Musk’s company, and did so to try to     10     the economy in low-Earth orbit. This approach is beginning to pay dividends(产生效益). Already, the Texas start-up Axiom Space has purchased four Dragon flights to take tourists to the ISS.

Finally, in Uganda, Ryan saw the finished well with his own eyes and a great warmth filled him. He really had made a difference for these children. Ryan’s experience led him to set up a foundation to encourage more people to help.     3     (他的基金会筹集的资金用于支持非洲的学校和社区。)

Now, as an adult, Ryan says that the question to ask is not “Why don’t I help?”, but “How can I help today?”. He is really a six-year-old boy who had the courage and perseverance to make his dream a reality.     4     (他真的是一个有勇气和毅力使梦想成真的六岁男孩。)

Soaring newsprint costs make life even harder

The cost of paper around the world is rising to record highs, pushing up expenses for newspapers from Mumbai to Sydney. When times were good, before ads     1     online, newspapers had a supportive partnership with paper mills. As ads departed and     2     fell, they are now at the shouting stage.

Paper mills had the worst of it for years as newspapers went     3     digital or shut for good. The papers were able to     4     down the cost of newsprint from firms fighting for business as demand declined. Many hesitated to shut massive machines costing hundreds of millions of dollars.

That hesitance has disappeared; mills are taking out newsprint capacity and     5    . Norske Skog, a Norwegian paper firm, said in June it would close its 66-year-old Tasman Mill in New Zealand, for example. Many mills are     6     machines to make packaging for e-commerce.UPM, a Finnish firm, announced this year the sale of its Shotton newsprint mill in Wales to a Turkish maker of container board and packaging. For JCS Volga, a Russian mill, newsprint used to account for 70% of production; now half of what it makes is packaging. The pandemic, with people working from home, meant even fewer newspaper purchases, which     7     demand for newsprint again and increased the pain for paper suppliers. In the past 24 months European mills have responded by shutting almost a fifth of their newsprint capacity, says a buyer for a large British newspaper group.

Then economies reopened. Newsprint demand shot up. That, combined with much reduced capacity and coupled with soaring energy prices, has resulted in a price shock. Particularly     8     are energy surcharges that some paper suppliers are seeking to pass on.

Newspaper firms reckon this amounts to     9    contracts. European newspapers will have to pay newsprint prices that are 50-70% higher in the first quarter of 2022 compared with the year before.

Germany’s print and media industry association has warned that mills are going to force newspapers to     10     paper editions, hurting each other in the process. “It’s about the famous branch that both of them are sitting on,” it said recently. But mills can sell packaging instead. “We’re not going to save the publishing industry by being unprofitable ourselves,”says a mill executive in North America.
