The 2020 Summer Olympics,       1     were planned for this summer in Tokyo, have been formally put off until 2021 because of COVID-19.

This is the first time the Olympics have been put off in the 124-year history of the Games. But in the past, they were canceled three     2     (time)—once during World War I and twice during World War II.

Putting off the Olympics will have many effects. For example, many sporting events which are already scheduled     3     (hold) in 2021 may have to be put off, too.

Though the move is disappointing for many athletes who have been preparing for this summer for years, it is also not     4     (surprise). The virus has already caused many important events to be put off. For athletes everywhere, it was getting much harder to carry on       5     (train) in the way they needed to. Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau called the     6     (decide) "heartbreaking" for athletes, coaches and fans, but he agreed that “this was the right call”. Many athletes had mixed feelings     7     the delay. British swimmer Adam Peaty said, “As an athlete, I am       8     (certain) sad, but this is     9     matter of life or death and we all need to do the right thing. ”

Till now new dates       10     (set) for the games-the Games will be held between July 23, 2021 and August 8, 2021.
