1 . AQUILA Children’s Magazine is the most intelligent read for curious kids. Full of enthusiastic articles and challenging puzzles, every issue covers science, history and general knowledge. AQUILA is a quality production, beautifully illustrated with contemporary artwork throughout.

Intelligent reading for 8-12-year-olds

Cool science and challenging projects

Inspires self-motivated learning

Exciting new topics every issue

AQUILA is created and owned by an independent UK company. It has 28 pages, printed on high-quality paper and there are no advertisements or posters. Instead it is full of well-written articles, thought-provoking (令人深思的) ideas and great contemporary artwork. Each monthly issue is centred around a new topic.

AQUILA works as a superb learning extension to current primary (or KS2 and KS3) curriculum (课程), but it is much more than that! Entertaining and always surprising, AQUILA is recommended because it widens children’s interest and understanding, rather than encouraging them to concentrate only on their favourite subjects. It gives children a well-rounded understanding of the world, in all its complexity.

The concepts in AQUILA can be challenging, requiring good comprehension and reading skills. Eight years is usually a good age to start. Some gentle interest from an adult is often helpful at the start.

In 2021 AQUILA will have been in publication for 29 years, but it has never appeared in newsstands or shops. We are subscription only.

5 . Every morning I walk outside and bring in the morning newspaper. There was a time when every house on both sides of the street had a newspaper in the driveway. There was also a time when every house had a landline telephone, but not anymore. Not for a long time.

My husband is less willing to accept the downward trend of print-edition newspapers, as he has worked in newspapers since the age of 16. Even before that, he was what you would call an “independent publisher”.

Recently, we were at a Chicago park with our grandchildren. My husband had a newspaper folded under his arm. He sat down and put the paper on the bench beside him. A young girl walked over, looked at the newspaper, picked it up and asked, " What's this?"

I thought he was going to fall over. The color faded from his face. His eyes rolled back in his head and his legs were giving out. I rolled up his paper and waved it under his nose. The smells from the ink woke him up.

Some people simply love paper ― the feel, the portability, and the pleasure of piling them higher and higher until their wife cries, “Enough!"   My husband was happy when he spent time with our youngest daughter and her husband. When they lived with us, they raced to pull the crossword puzzle from the paper every day. It's hard to do a crossword online. Pencil doesn't come off a computer screen as easily as you might think.

Now my husband will be very excited that I have found further proof that there may still be hope for the survival of print. I was chatting with a young mother who subscribes to the daily newspaper. I asked why she did something so conservatively. She looked shocked. "Because it's print!" she said. "I love print! When the paper didn't come one day, would you believe I called the main number to let them know and the lady said, ' Why don't you just subscribe to the online version? '” She shook her head in disbelief.

My husband will be so thrilled that he might write this young woman into his will. I say we leave her all our piles of old newspapers.

A.Many young people follow an old-fashioned lifestyle.
B.It's inconvenient for the old to read online newspapers.
C.There're still young people who love printed newspapers.
D.Printed newspapers will be replaced by online newspapers.
4. What does the author mainly talk about in the passage?
A.The new rise of digital newspapers on the line.
B.A man's everlasting love for printed newspapers.
C.The pleasure of looking through daily newspapers.

文章大意:这是一篇说明文。文章介绍了Pierre Deom创办的提高人们生态意识的吸引人的杂志La Hulotte.

8 . Sixty-four-year-old Pierre Deom has spent his entire life close to the woods and fields that he loves. Twice a year, his magazine, La Hulotte, focuses on an animal or plant native to the French countryside.

The 100th edition was published in November. The magazine counts more than 150,000 subscribers in many countries, and is doing very well financially. Deom says it all began in January 1972, when he was teaching science in a one-room schoolhouse here. “It upset me how the forests and swamps were beginning to be ruined. The word ‘ecology’ didn’t really exist yet. Some friends and I wanted to call attention to the issue. So we said, let’s educate the kids. They’re ready to hear our message.” So he took a step into the unknown, planning to publish his nature journal.

Deom does all the research and writing and the illustrations of the magazine by hand. He combines science and humor in his writing and drawing to describe the daily life and sufferings of his creatures. Animals you might overlook or consider dull are magically and vividly brought to life in La Hulotte. “I try to write about animals and plants that are easy to find because I want kids to put on boots, take a magnifying glass, go to the woods and fields to observe and be amazed by what they find,” Deom says.

And it seems to work. Biologist Jerome Fournier began subscribing to La Hulotte when he was just eight years old. “For me it was the first contact with nature when I was a child. And maybe it’s the beginning for my life of scientist. I think so.”

What’s amazing is its approach. The magazine has realistic drawings and also a little cast of cartoon creatures who comment on things and give a different views. You can read it as an adult or a child; it can be understood on two different levels. So scientists, regular people and children all get something out of it. “It’s extraordinary.” Fournier says, who works at the Museum of Natural History in Paris, where he says La Hulotte has a crazy following.

1. What does the underlined word “subscribers” in Paragraph 2 probably mean?
A.ReadersB.EditorsC.SellersD.Collectors
2. What’s the purpose of creating the magazine?
A.To make a lot of money.B.To finish the task of teaching.
C.To enlarge the areas of forests.D.To promote people’s awareness of ecology.
3. Which words can best describe the magazine La Hulotte?
A.Scientific and interesting.B.Magical and dull.
C.Vivid and unreal.D.Hard to understand.
4. What can we learn from the last paragraph?
A.The magazine is a cartoon one.B.Adults find the magazine too easy.
C.Many scientists are the fans of the magazine.D.The magazine is not fit for regular people to read.

9 . Hundreds of years ago, news was carried from place to place by people on foot or by horse. It took days, weeks and sometimes months for people to receive news. Now it is possible to send words and pictures around the world in seconds. Billions of people learn about news stories of their own country and all over the world every day, either by watching TV or reading newspaper.

Newspapers have been an important part of everyday life since the 18th century. Many countries have hundreds of different newspapers. How do newspaper editors decide which news stories to print? Why do they print some stories and not others? What makes a good newspaper story?

Firstly, it is important to report news stories. TV stations can report news much faster than newspapers. Yet, newspapers give more about the same story. They may also look at the story in another way, or they may print completely different stories to those on TV.

Secondly, a news story has to be interesting and unusual. People don’t want to read stories about everyday life. As a result, many stories are about some kind of danger and seem to be “bad” news. For example, newspapers never print stories about planes landing safely; instead they print stories about plane accidents.

Another factor (因素) is also very important in many news stories. Many people are interested in news in foreign countries, but more prefer to read stories about people, places and events in their own country. So the stories on the front page in Chinese newspapers are usually very different from the ones in British, French and American newspapers.

1. According to the passage, how do people learn about news stories in the world now?
A.They carry news stories and tell others from place to place on foot or by horse.
B.They tell each other what they have seen with their eyes.
C.They watch TV or read newspapers.
D.They listen to the radio every day.
2. The difference between newspaper stories and TV news reports is that ________.
A.people can learn more about the same news story from a newspaper
B.people can read the news story more quickly in a newspaper
C.people can read news stories in other countries
D.people can read news stories about their own country
3. To make a good newspaper story, how many factors does the passage talk about?
A.Two.
B.Three.
C.Five.
D.Six.
4. According to the passage, which of the following can you most possibly watch on TV?
A.Your teacher has got a cold.
B.The bike in front of your house is lost.
C.You often play football with your friends after school.
D.A tiger in the city zoo has run out and hasn’t been caught.

文章大意:本文是一篇说明文。文章主要介绍了美国报纸的特点。

10 . No country in the world has more daily newspapers than the US. There are almost 2,000 of them, as compared with 180 in Japan, 164 in Argentina and 111 in Britain. The quality of some American papers is extremely high and their views are quoted all over the world. Famous dailies like the Washington Post or the New York Times have a powerful influence all over the country. However, they are not national newspapers in the sense that The Times is in Britain or Le Monde is in France, since each American city has its own daily newspaper. The best of these presents detailed description of national and international news, but many tend to limit themselves to state or city news.

Like the press in most other countries, American newspapers range from the “sensational” which feature crime and gossip (闲谈), to the “serious”, which focus on factual news and the analysis of world events. But with few exceptions, American newspapers try to entertain as well as give information, for they have to compete with the attraction of television.

Just as American newspapers satisfy all tastes, so do they also try to attract readers of all political parties. A few newspapers support extremist (极端主义的) groups on the far right and on the far left, but most daily newspapers try to attract middle-of-the-road Americans who are moderate (中立的). Many of these papers print columns by well-known journalists of different political and social views, in order to present a balanced picture.

As in other countries, American newspapers can be either responsible or irresponsible, but it is generally accepted that the American press serves its country well and that it has more than once courageously exposed political scandals (丑闻) or crimes, for instance, the Watergate Affair (水门事件). The newspapers drew the attention of the public to the horrors of the Vietnam War.

1. There are fewer national newspapers in       .
A.the US than in Britain or France
B.France than in the US or Britain
C.Britain than in the US
D.France than in Britain
2. Why do most American newspapers try hard to entertain their readers?
A.Because they have to give factual news in an interesting way.
B.Because they have to keep up a good relation with them.
C.Because they have to write about crime and gossip.
D.Because they have to compete with television.
3. How do many American newspapers attract readers of different political preference?
A.By avoiding carrying articles about extremists.
B.By supporting extremist groups from time to time.
C.By printing articles representing different political viewpoints.
D.By inviting middle-of-the-road Americans to write articles for them.
4. The passage is mainly about       .
A.the advantages and disadvantages of American newspapers
B.the characteristics of American newspapers
C.the development of American newspapers
D.the functions of American newspapers
