3 . When people mention Paris, they often talk of it as a "museum city". What they mean by that is that it hardly changes. But there are several brand new or totally improved museums opening - and all of them look like they're worth a visit. The biggest of the bunch is the Bourse de Commerce: a former exchange building near the Center Pompidou that's been turned into a vast contemporary art space. It will host several temporary exhibitions each year, featuring works from the collection of billionaire Francois Pinault.
Then there's the Hotel de la Marine on Place de la Concorde. This former navy headquarters dates back more than 250 years. In its earliest days, the site served as a storage place for the king's furniture. It will be open to the public for the first time this week.
The Maison de Serge Gainsbourg will welcome the public for the first time this autumn. The main attraction will be the large living area, with its piano and Gainsbourg’s huge collection of sculptures.
The other major museum coming to the city is the Musée Carnavalet. Built in 1548 and transformed by the famous architect Mansart in 1660, this maison (豪宅) became a museum in 1866. It offers an overview of the city's history through paintings, artefacts and 30 "period rooms" moved from elsewhere in the capital. Its five-year, 58 million repairs have been entirely financed by the Paris mayor's office. Now that's the kind of "museum city" we can get behind.

9 . We all have one shirt in the closet that we don’t want to get rid of, yet keeping around because we can’t bear to just throw it in the garbage. We don’t wear it anymore. Being a little out of style, your old T-shirt needs a new home where it can be appreciated. One city in Toronto has started a project to give it one.
Earlier this year the Toronto suburbs of Markham introduced a new program encouraging its residents and residents of nearby suburbs to donate their old unwanted clothing. The program is exceptional because unlike most of those second-hand stores, they are accepting old clothing that isn’t quite in perfect condition. It is breathing new life into these typically-trashed items. Contrary to common belief, textiles(纺织品)are not only used for clothing, and these items are being re-purposed in a variety of interesting ways.
The city has set up many different donation centers around the suburbs and residents are encouraged to donate any unwanted textiles they happen to have lying around their house. It’s volunteers’ duty to divide the donations into different sorts. Those items in usable and good condition are donated to local homeless shelters and other aid centers. Those which are not are shipped off to be used for industrial purposes. Only when there is no more industrial need for fabric and textiles will they begin to use their last place — a landfill outside the city.
The program isn’t the city’s only green initiative (倡议). It has already had one of Canada and the world’s largest solar panels, and it is said that they are steadily working towards a shift to 100% renewable energy. The city also has subsidized (补助) farmers’ markets and over 125 miles of bike paths. As a result, Markham also has a much lower rate of obesity than other Canadian cities. Now, it’s working towards another goal — 100% recycling of unwanted textiles.

10 . The Worlds' Best Bookshops
There's nothing like being surrounded by books, wherever you are. Here are the finest oases of literature that travellers can bring you.
Daikanyama T﹣site | Tokyo
It is well worth visiting even if just to admire the building's beautiful, crisscrossed architecture. Once you've had your fill of roaming three floors' worth of bookshelves, there's the bar, the coffee shop, or even the video rental space to give you more reason to stay just that little bit longer. Grab a book, order a beer and dive into its pages. I could have stayed hours here.
City Lights | San Francisco
The three﹣storey establishment publishes and sells titles in poetry, fiction, translation, politics, history and the arts. It hosts events and readings, and runs a non﹣profit of the same name that aims to promote diversity of voices and ideas in literature. It's opposite Vesuvio, a bar frequented by Kerouac and other Beat﹣generation writers and artists.
Shakespeare and Company | Paris
I made a special trip to the Left Bank for this one when I was in Paris. It has two floors packed with English﹣language texts, and I was particularly struck by any spare wall space devoted to notes from visitors ﹣ heartfelt messages to a loved one, dedications to the shop itself, or a quote from a favourite author or philosopher.
Hutatma Chowk | Mumbai
A few years ago I visited India, investigating Rudyard Kipling's connections with the country. I spotted a cheap copy of The Jungle Book on one of the tarp﹣covered book stalls at Hutatma Chowk (Martyrs' Square). The booksellers here are like amateur librarians, able to lay their hands on almost any title you ask for. To me, those well﹣thumbed (翻旧了的) books spoke volumes about the changes of Mumbai's readers in the 150 years since the city gave us Kipling.
