Fashion and Retail Organization

Purdue’s Fashion and Retail Organization is focused toward anyone and everyone with n love for the fashion or retail industry. FRO is open to all Purdue students. Higher Ground Dance Company

Higher Ground is a student-run and student-choreographed(学生负责编舞的)dance company that puts on a show each semester to raise money for the Andrea Rizzo Foundation. The Andrea Rizzo Foundation is an organization that provides dance therapy to children with special needs and/or terminal(晚期的)illnesses.

Purdue Engineering Outreach

PEO brings engineering to middle school and high school classrooms in creative ways. This club was started to help show the next generation that science, technology, engineering and math are not only incredibly important fields of study, but also interesting and fun ones. We partner with organizations, such as College Mentors for Kids and Girl Scouts, as well as local schools, to brine engineering into the classroom. Additionally, we love to have fun, and seek to create a welcoming atmosphere for all. New members are welcome at all times of the year!

Shakespeare and Company is an English - language bookshop in the heart of Paris. It     1     (be) a meeting place for writers and readers for almost seventy years.

In 1951, a bookshop     2     (name) Le Mistral was opened by George Whitman. It was renamed Shakespeare and Company in 1964     3     honor of a bookseller he admired, Sylvia Beach, who founded the     4     (origin) Shakespeare and Company in 1919. Beach's bookstore had been a gathering place for great writers of the time, including Hemingway, Fitzgerald, and Pound.

George's bookstore quickly became a center for literary life. From the first day, writers, artists, and intellectuals were invited     5     (sleep) for free among the shelves. Since then, an estimated 30, 000 people have stayed in the bookshop. Over the years, the shop     6     (gradual) grew. George said, “I     7     (create) this bookstore like a man would write a novel, building each room like     8     chapter, and I like people to open the door the way they open a book.”

Today George's novel, this bookshop, is still being written by George's child Sylvia, by a team of     9     (bookseller), and by the thousands of people     10     continue to read, write, and sleep at Shakespeare and Company.

6 . Wildwood School Library Guide

Most museums ask us to     1     our distance from the artworks, but Atelier des Lumieres, a new digital art center in France, allows visitors to set foot     2     the world of art.

Since it opened in April, the art center has been called Paris’ new “studio(工作室) of lights”. Its 16,000-square-foot hall     3     the perfect spot for the art center’s projection-based(基于投影的) exhibits.

The main exhibition, for example, begins with a view of Vienna, Austria. Visitors experience one of the biggest names in the history of European art Austrian painter Gustav Klimt(1862-1968). The best part is the digital pictures that cover the display area,     4     portraits(肖像画) of women and girls.

After     5     Klimt’s most popular work, Brid Stenson from the Guardian wrote, “Rather than searching for a spot near a ... painting, I find myself wanting to reach into the space in front of me and touch the gold leaf of The Kiss and The Tree of Life as they are     6     cast(投射) around the room.”

Apart from the video images, background music also adds beauty to the exhibition. The art center includes soundtracks from many     7    , including Polish pianist Frederic Chopin, and German     8     Ludwig van Beethoven.

8 . Usually in school or in clubs, children are told not to horse around-horsing around means “to act badly”. But in south London, there is a club that loves it when students horse around.

The Ebony Horse Club is a riding school for children from poor families. General Manager Naomi How gate runs the team that runs the school. With the help of volunteers, they give about 140 rides each week to children. They teach not only horseback riding but also important life skills.

The program’s eight horses have returned to their home after a long rest outside London in East Surrey. Across the road from housing for the poor, young people are again learning how to ride.

They begin by learning how to mount, or how to get on the horse. Then, they learn how to walk, jog, and finally keep the horses running slowly. These are specialized terms (专业术语) for how a horse walks or runs.

One of the club’s youngest riders is Shaddai Mcleod. The 9-year-old was very excited to be back in the saddle (马鞍). He rides after school. But he joins the team on Sundays to help in the yard. He said he gets great pleasure taking care of the horses: cleaning out the stables, tidying the horses, and measuring out their evening meals. His sister Zion is 13 and works just as hard as her brother. As she saddles up her favorite horse, Eddie, for her lesson, she says how lucky she is to be a member of the club.

Along with riding close to home, Ebony Horse Club members take day trips to clubs in the English countryside. One year ago, groups of children from the club had wonderful experiences. They also have traveled as far away as Sweden to ride horses.

The club has experienced an increase in children wanting to join. But it needs donations (捐赠) to keep running.
