Rockdale Emergency Relief (RER) Community Food Bank

It needs your help in donating food items to help those in need within the community. The most needed items are: canned meat. Hamburger Helper, instant mashed potatoes, pork & beans, and canned tomato products.

It is also looking for part-time volunteers who can help this summer when some of our regular volunteers will be on vacation. If you have time available to work in the warehouse area where you would receive donations of food, we could use your help! 5 . Silk Road countries celebrated at a forum

I was honored to be invited to the International Forum on the Silk Roads at the United Nations Education, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) Headquarters in April.

Before ________ this event, I didn’t know much about what UNESCO was, except that they had ________ the World Heritage (遗产) List. However, as I did more ________, I realized that there was so much more about UNESCO than just listing valuable heritage sites around the world.

UNESCO was ________ in 1942 in the midst of World WarⅡ. Many European ________ that had been fighting against Nazi Germany came together to ________ ways of rebuilding the ________ system after the war was over. Since then, the organization has expanded (扩大) beyond Europe to include all ________ of the United Nations while keeping to their ________ goal of achieving ________ through the intellectual and moral education of humanity.

I had high expectations for this event, which ________ to be an evening of music, dance and a display of arts by three countries along the Silk Road. The performances were indeed excellent. The three musical performances by the Kazakh band, filled with wonderful music and low drum beats, had everyone on the edge of their ________. I also enjoyed the hanfu fashion show which was the final performance for the evening. The history of hanfu was ________ by models wearing clothes from different Chinese dynasties. They walked onto the stage while the host explained the details of each hanfu style. I found the event to be not only ________ entertaining, but also a great opportunity to explore the ________ of different countries along the Silk Road. UNESCO’s events offer chances to celebrate and appreciate their unique beauty.

“If the world ends one day, these collections will bring hope of a new beginning to life on the earth,”s aid Li Pei, a staff member at the Germplasm Bank of Wild Species(GBOWS), in Yunnan Province.

    1    (found)in 2007, GBOWS is a research and preservation facility for rare and endangered plants and animals.

How does the bank work? Scientists collect endangered and     2    (use)wild species and send them to the seed bank. For future study, collectors have to record     3    (detail)of the plant, including     4     it was found, its size and the number of individual plants in the habitat.

Once the seeds arrive, they’re handled     5    (proper)by scientists. Then, X-rays confirm that the seeds are in good state. Then the seeds     6    (freeze), stored in glass bottles and placed in huge freezers at—20 ℃. Each container has     7     bar code for scanning to enable scientists to view seeds’ information.

GBOWS in Yunnan,     8     works with international partners, holds 2,176 sets of seeds from 45 countries and regions, with each set     9    (contain)thousands of individual seeds.

“As China has rich and unique biological resources, we aim to further enhance(增加)our collections and conduct     10    (deep)research,” Li Pei said.

At the opening session of the 20^th National Congress of the Communist Party of China (CPC) on Oct 16, Xi Jinping, general secretary of the CPC Central Committee,     1    (deliver) an important report in which he stressed that the work concerning young people is     2    (strategic) significant. “A nation will prosper only     3     its young people thrive (青年强，则国家强).”

Close attention was paid     4     issues of immediate concern for young people in     5    (vary) areas. The country has established and continued to improve the system of financial aid for students,     6     offers full coverage from preschool to postgraduate (研究生) education. More young people have thus been granted equal opportunities to receive better education, according to the Youth of China in the New Era,     7     official report     8    (release) by the State Council in April.
