1 . Donna Edmonds certainly knows a thing or two about getting children outside of the classroom. Having been a teacher for 23 years, she’s now in charge of Farms For City Children, a program enabling children in cities to explore the farms in the British countryside. Visiting children can take part in the farm tasks: growing and harvesting in the gardens; caring for chickens and looking after the land; and cooking up a home-grown meal in the farmhouse kitchen.
Donna’s connection with the charity led to a life-changing experience. She explained, “In November 2000, my headteacher said we’d got this trip going to a farm. I didn’t want to do that. I’m from south London and had no interest in farming.” But the week at Farms For City Children changed Donna’s entire life.
Donna said, “Quite honestly, the nature connection gap in our society is embarrassing; there are so many children who haven’t been to the countryside. I remember asking them what cows drank and they replied “milk”. Seeing them fall in love with nature was incredible to my life.”
Donna believes there is a strong need for teachers to bring city children into close contact with nature. Farms for City Children was founded in 1976, and it has now embraced a new direction — more children from different backgrounds can get into the countryside and they may one day even make a career from it.

MAP International
Since its foundation in 1954, MAP has served millions of people. Its mission is to provide medicines and health supplies to those in need around the world so they might experience life to the fullest. At present, MAP is responding to recent emergencies that include areas hit by earthquakes or hurricanes, as well as helping refugees. Contributions go a long way here; a $25 donation provides $1,500 of medicine. A notable 99 percent of its funding is used for aid programs.
Books for Africa
Books for Africa organization collects, sorts, ships and distributes books that are donated by publishers, schools, libraries, organizations, and individuals. Volunteers choose books that are age and subject appropriate. Enough books for entire classes are sent. To date, 41 million books have been distributed to once-empty libraries and rural schools in every African country. This organization, founded 35 years ago, also uses 99 percent of its funding for its missions.

University of Saskatchewan Graduate Scholarship
If you are not a Chinese citizen but want to pursue your postgraduate studies at the University of Saskatchewan, you can choose this scholarship. Their PhD scholarships are valued at CA $20,000 each; alternatively, their Master’s thesis(论文)is valued at CA$16,000. Deadline to apply is February 22nd, 2023.
Canada-ASEAN Scholarships and Educational Exchange for Development (SEED)

7 . Representatives from around China gather in Beijing every five years for the National Congress of the communist Party of China (中共二十大).
This year, a total of 2,296 representatives were elected to attend the 20th National Congress of the CPC, which convened (召开) on Oct 16.
◆What do the representatives do?

1 Welcome
Jane Simmons welcomed all colleagues to the meeting. She explained the aim of the Colleague Council—issues which are of concern to staff members can be raised and discussed by the group, and then addressed to Personnel Manager, Penny Kacelnik, in the second half of the meeting. Meetings will be held four times a year.
MATTERS ARISING FROM THE MINUTES
2 Lifting of International call barring
The council asked if it would be possible to have the phone system changed so that international calls can be made.
All phones in Sales & Marketing will be modified in November to allow for international calls. Anyone else who needs to call overseas should contact Asif Din in IT.
3 Recycling of paper
The council enquired if the correct route for raising recycling issues was through John Evans, Office Services Manager.
Penny agreed that this was the correct route. She also added that she would welcome everyone looking at the paper they use and cutting down if possible. Individuals are reminded that they can also make a difference by turning lights and monitors etc. off.
4 Healthy snack options in snack machines
The council requested that a healthy range of snacks be available from the snack machine.
Penny reminded everyone that the canteen offers healthy lunch-time options. She will discuss the contents of the machine with the leasers (租赁方) when the lease comes up for renewal next month. Feedback to be given at Jan meeting.
5 Removal of study grants
The council expressed regret that study grants for non-professional courses were no longer available. People should be encouraged to take language courses, for example, given our growing international market.
Penny explained that Management felt this money could be better used on paying for courses which would lead to professional qualifications, such as Accountancy, Credit Control. She also suggested that in-house language courses could be taught by members of staff.
