In 1965, Millard and Linda Fuller decided to trade their lives as millionaires for a simple life helping others. They made this decision after visiting a community-run farm,     1     everyone worked together and helped each other. The farm inspired the Fullers and in 1976, they founded Habitat for Humanity,     2     non-governmental organization aimed     3     building houses worldwide for poor people.

Habitat houses are built by volunteers, and the materials used to build the houses     4     (donate). Because the Fullers believe that people should work to improve their own lives, those who receive a house must also spend hours     5     (help) build their homes.

Believing that people should help     6     (they), the Fullers want to ensure that houses are not     7     (simple) handed to people in need. Habitat houses are not free, but they are     8     (expensive) than other houses because the organization does not profit from them.

Today there are volunteers all around the world. Since 2000, many volunteers, including middle school and university students,     9     (build) houses for people in need. By building houses and helping them take     10     (responsible) for their lives, Habitat for Humanity is building hope around the world.

The China International Search and Team (CISAR) was founded in 2001 and now consists of many rescue workers and about 14 sniffer dogs.

After long and careful training,     1     team started its first rescue missions in 2003. It was the first time that Chinese team     2    (go) abroad, and the team was highly praised for their    3     (brave) and skill.

The CISAR has helped a lot by all means     4    then. The list of people to     5     help has been given is long. The team treated over 2000 people who     6     (injure) in the 2004 earthquake in Indonesia, spent several months     7     (aid) more than 20, 000 victims of the 2006 floods in Pakistan, and built many shelters     8     survivors whose homes had been destroyed in Thailand in 2008.

Rescue workers are     9    (careful) trained to find people, provide medical care and hand out supplies. After a disaster, there is usually no electricity or water, and there may be diseases and accidents. So they must have big     10    (heart). The members of the CISAR are always ready to help.

Despite many laws and     1     (nation) parks protecting tigers, their habitats (栖息地) continue to be destroyed and they are still being hunted. Tigers are among the most endangered species (物种) in the world nowadays. Altogether, there are no more than 5,000 tigers     2     (leave) in the wild. Some think that the tiger is already to the point of extinction in the wild. There are many reasons for this, like habitat loss and hunting.

Actually, over the last few years, a number of steps     3     (take) to help preserve the tiger. The Wildlife Conservation Society (WCS) was set up to protect wildlife and their habitats in     4     early 2000s. Today WCS is carrying out work in 53 nations across the world, protecting a great     5    (various) of species from butterflies to tigers. In 2010, WCS started Tigers Forever,     6     aim was to increase the number of tigers in the world by 50 percent in the next 10 years.     7     (achieve) their goals, they are working together with not only governments     8     other organizations to protect tigers and other wild species     9     dying out.

Right now the tiger population is increasing steadily under this program in India and in Far East Russia. Due to the hard work of WCS, these large cats have a     10    (good) chance of survival in their natural environments than ever, not just in zoos.

The 2020 Nobel Peace Prize     1     (go) to the UN World Food Program (WFP) on Friday, 9 October 2020. The agency was recognized for its efforts to fight hunger, for its contribution to     2     (improve) conditions for peace in conflict-affected areas and for acting as a driving force to prevent the use of hunger     3     a weapon of war and conflict. The efforts of WFP focus on emergency assistance, development aid and special operations, two thirds of     4     are made in conflict-affected countries. In those countries, people are three times more likely to suffer poor nutrition     5     those living in countries without conflict do.

David Beasley, WFP Executive Director, said the     6     (announce) made by the Norwegian Nobel Committee turned the global spotlight on the 690 million people     7     (expose) to severe levels of food insecurity. “Every one of them has the right to live peacefully and without hunger.”

Mr. Beasley also noted that the Nobel Peace Prize was not     8     (simple) WFP’s. He said, “WFP works closely with governments, organizations and individuals whose love for helping hungry people equals     9     (we). We could not possibly help anyone without them. And the daily work of our members     10     (drive) by our core values of integrity(诚实正直) and humanity.”
