The 2020 Nobel Peace Prize went to the UN World Food Program (WFP) on Friday, 9th October, 2020. The agency was recognized for its efforts to fight hunger, for its contribution     1     improving conditions for peace in conflict-affected areas     2     for acting as a driving force to prevent the use of hunger as a weapon of war and conflict. The efforts of WFP focus on emergency     3    (assist), development aid and special operations, two thirds of which     4     (make) in conflict-affected countries. In those countries, people are three times more likely     5     (suffer) poor nutrition than those living in countries without conflict do.

David Beasley, WFP Executive Director, said the announcement made by the Norwegian Nobel Committee     6     (turn) the global spotlight on the 690 million people exposed (暴露) to severe levels of food insecurity. “Every one of them has the right to live     7     (peaceful) and without hunger.”

Mr. Beasley also noted that the Nobel Peace Prize was not simply WFP’s. He said, “WFP works closely with governments, organizations and individuals     8     love for helping hungry people equals ours. We could not possibly help     9    (someone) without them. And     10     daily work of our members is driven by our core values of integrity and humanity.”

Formed in 2001, the China International Search and Rescue Team (CISAR) brings help and hope to those     1     lives are changed by natural disasters.

The team carried out its first international rescue mission in2003. It was the first time that a Chinese team     2     (work) outside China, and the team won high praise     3     their bravery and skills. The list of people to whom help has been given ever since is long. The team treated more than 3,000 people who were injured in the 2006 earthquake in Indonesia, and spent several months     4    (give) aid to over 25, 000 victims of the 2010 floods in Pakistan.

Rescue workers     5     (train) to find people, treat the injured, and hand out food, water, and other     6     (supply). There is     7     (usual) no electricity or water after a disaster and diseases and accidents may appear.     8     (save) lives, rescue workers have to work day and night, and sadly they must also bury     9     dead, which means they have to be strong in both the body and the mind. The organisation is called Roots & Shoots because roots move    1     (slow) under the ground to make a firm foundation, and shoots seem small and weak,     2     they can break open brick walls to reach the light. The roots and shoots are you, your friends and young people all around the world. Hundreds and thousands of roots and shoots can solve the problems, change the world and make it a better place    3    (live) in.

Clubs can provide many life skills     1     teenagers by giving them just a bit more life experience outside of home and school. After-school clubs, sports, and other extra-curricular activities can be     2    (benefit) to every child. Kids can pursue (追求) a variety of interests     3     are really enjoyed.

Many high schools and middle schools offer a variety of clubs and activities, often after school. They’re interesting and keep kids out of trouble. They can also help teens improve     4    (they) interests and can help find their     5    (step) after high school graduation. Clubs can     6    (base) on activities people usually enjoy like cooking, photography, wood-working, theatre, gardening, running or crafting.
