Today, giant pandas are considered to be one of the world’s best-known animals. People make huge efforts     1     (protect) them and luckily their efforts are paying off in some areas.     2     (global) recognized as a leading symbol of both China and nature conservation in general, giant pandas are popular in the world. But global interest in the animal only     3     (take) off in the 20th century.

The inspiration for WWF’s logo (标识) came from Chi Chi,     4     giant panda that arrived at London Zoo in 1958. Being aware of the need for a remarkable symbol to break through all language barriers, one of the WWF’s     5     (founder) agreed to make the big furry panda with her distinctive black and white coat a great logo. The first pieces     6     were done by the British environmentalist and artist Gerald Watterson became modestly successful. Later,     7     (base) on these drafts, Sir Peter Scott, drew the first logo. He said at the time, “we want an animal that is beautiful and endangered, and is loved for its     8     (attract) qualities. We also want an animal that is black and white to cut printing costs. To our relief, we make     9     eventually.”

The panda has ever since become a symbol not just for WWF,     10     for the conservation movement as well.

Despite many laws and     1     (nation) parks protecting tigers, their habitats (栖息地) continue to be destroyed and they are still being hunted. Tigers are among the most endangered species (物种) in the world nowadays. Altogether, there are no more than 5,000 tigers     2     (leave) in the wild. Some think that the tiger is already to the point of extinction in the wild. There are many reasons for this, like habitat loss and hunting.

Actually, over the last few years, a number of steps     3     (take) to help preserve the tiger. The Wildlife Conservation Society (WCS) was set up to protect wildlife and their habitats in     4     early 2000s. Today WCS is carrying out work in 53 nations across the world, protecting a great     5    (various) of species from butterflies to tigers. In 2010, WCS started Tigers Forever,     6     aim was to increase the number of tigers in the world by 50 percent in the next 10 years.     7     (achieve) their goals, they are working together with not only governments     8     other organizations to protect tigers and other wild species     9     dying out.

Right now the tiger population is increasing steadily under this program in India and in Far East Russia. Due to the hard work of WCS, these large cats have a     10    (good) chance of survival in their natural environments than ever, not just in zoos.

The 2020 Nobel Peace Prize     1     (go) to the UN World Food Program (WFP) on Friday, 9 October 2020. The agency was recognized for its efforts to fight hunger, for its contribution to     2     (improve) conditions for peace in conflict-affected areas and for acting as a driving force to prevent the use of hunger     3     a weapon of war and conflict. The efforts of WFP focus on emergency assistance, development aid and special operations, two thirds of     4     are made in conflict-affected countries. In those countries, people are three times more likely to suffer poor nutrition     5     those living in countries without conflict do.

David Beasley, WFP Executive Director, said the     6     (announce) made by the Norwegian Nobel Committee turned the global spotlight on the 690 million people     7     (expose) to severe levels of food insecurity. “Every one of them has the right to live peacefully and without hunger.”

Mr. Beasley also noted that the Nobel Peace Prize was not     8     (simple) WFP’s. He said, “WFP works closely with governments, organizations and individuals whose love for helping hungry people equals     9     (we). We could not possibly help anyone without them. And the daily work of our members     10     (drive) by our core values of integrity(诚实正直) and humanity.”

Formed in 2001, the China International Search and Rescue team (CISAR),     1     (bring) help and hope to those     2     lives are changed by a storm, a flood, an earthquake or any other natural disaster. It always gets the job done     3     (efficient).

The team went on its first international rescue missions in 2003 and won high praise for their     4     (brave) and skill. Since then, the CISAR has completed many missions. The list of people to whom help     5     (give) is long.

After a disaster, they get to save lives in the     6     (little) possible time. There is usually no electricity or water, and there may be diseases and accidents,     7     (put) them at risk. That means they have to be strong     8     both body and mind. Besides, rescue workers must have big hearts, too. It takes a lot of love and courage to risk one’s own life     9     (save) someone else’s. The members of the CISAR have plenty of both and are always ready to go     10     help is needed.

Clubs can provide many life skills     1     teenagers by giving them just a bit more life experience outside of home and school. After-school clubs, sports, and other extra-curricular activities can be     2    (benefit) to every child. Kids can pursue (追求) a variety of interests     3     are really enjoyed.

Many high schools and middle schools offer a variety of clubs and activities, often after school. They’re interesting and keep kids out of trouble. They can also help teens improve     4    (they) interests and can help find their     5    (step) after high school graduation. Clubs can     6    (base) on activities people usually enjoy like cooking, photography, wood-working, theatre, gardening, running or crafting. Clubs     9    (common) meet every month, or every other week to discuss their interests or participate in an activity. It’s a meaningful social event and something     10    (look) forward to during the busy week.

In 1965, Millard and Linda Fuller decided to trade their lives as millionaires for a simple life helping others. They made this decision after visiting a community-run farm,     1     everyone worked together and helped each other. The farm inspired the Fullers and in 1976, they founded Habitat for Humanity,     2     non-governmental organization aimed     3     building houses worldwide for poor people.

Habitat houses are built by volunteers, and the materials used to build the houses     4     (donate). Because the Fullers believe that people should work to improve their own lives, those who receive a house must also spend hours     5     (help) build their homes.

Believing that people should help     6     (they), the Fullers want to ensure that houses are not     7     (simple) handed to people in need. Habitat houses are not free, but they are     8     (expensive) than other houses because the organization does not profit from them.

Today there are volunteers all around the world. Since 2000, many volunteers, including middle school and university students,     9     (build) houses for people in need. By building houses and helping them take     10     (responsible) for their lives, Habitat for Humanity is building hope around the world.
